Livingstone Life!
Year 1
Welcome back to another fun filled term.
Our first half term in Year 1 flew by with lots of
exciting things and learning that took place.
Our ‘Donaldson’s Delights’ topic was a HUGE
success with the children becoming fully immersed
in the stories we were focused on. We had an
unwanted visitor who trashed our classrooms (the
Gruffalo), a video message from a distraught
witch’s mother and a message from a Lieutenant
with information about an escaped dragon (Room
on the Broom) which all inspired our descriptive
writing and posters.
The children learnt the skill of joining clay and
produced some amazing clay characters linked to
the Gruffalo.
There was a bit of a disaster when we got out our
cauldrons and started to write some spells and
potion recipes… Mrs Steele was temporarily turned
into a frog! The spell was soon reversed and we are
glad to see Mrs Steele back to normal, although
she does still snack on a fly or two!
Just before half term we had a
whole week of art– all day,
every day!
We had a focus on two artists,
comparing their skills and techniques as well
as recreating some of their art.
The week began with us learning all about
primary colours, colour mixing and the
secondary colours. We looked at Mondrain
and his use of the primary colours
and shapes. The children
created his style work with
pastels, on tablets and in true Art Attack style
– giant art!
We then went on to look at Van Gogh
and his use of sketching.
We recreated Starry Night
and Sunflowers.
Once we were familiar with the skills and
techniques of both artists we used them as
inspiration to create our own pieces, simply
changing the colours/ shapes or the nature
we sketched.
A fantastic week had by all which showcased
some budding artists!

Reading
We will be checking and monitoring the reading that
is taking place at home and the recording in yellow
reading records. Please ensure these and the reading
books are in book bags everyday– thank you.
‘African Adventures’ is our topic for this half
term. Last week we had our hook day to
immerse us into the topic which started with
a ‘flight’ to Africa.
Once landed, we started by learning the Azonto dance which will continue to be perfected
throughout PE lessons this half term. Throughout the day we continued to apply our skills of sketching
from art week by sketching African objects. We created our own African family print using paints and
patterns. We learnt an African song about a cheeky monkey and played along to this on African drums.
Mr Powis set up the green screen and we put on some traditional African clothing so we could have
photos taken in Africa. Thank you for the effort with the clothing for the day– it really helped make it
special!
We have continued to learn a range of facts about Africa through our Geography linked to the climate,
countries and landmarks such as Mount Kilimanjaro, the Sahara Desert and the River Nile.
Over the next few weeks will be learning and writing the story ‘We’re going on a lion hunt’, looking at
non-fiction texts and creating fact sheets and learning about the classification of animals in Science–
this will begin with our visit from Crazy Creatures on Monday 18th November.
We would love the opportunity for you to come and share in all we have been learning about Africa at
the end of this topic therefore you are invited to come in at 2.45 on Thursday 5th December to see all
we have been doing.
