LENTLent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 1. Lent is the period of

forty days (excluding Sundays) from Ash Wednesday to Easterobserved by Christians as a season of pondering our bondage

to sin and the radical action God has taken to save us from sin anddeath in Jesus the Messiah. We do not focus on our own “goodwork” of the Lenten Fast, but on God’s saving work for us in Jesus’ atoning death on the crossand resurrection. We will once again serve supper at the church at 5 PM on the fiveWednesdays after Ash Wednesday, with services at 6:30 PM.

First Communion class for children third grade and older whose parents wish for them toreceive their first communion on Maundy Thursday will be held at regular Sunday schooltime on Sunday mornings (not at 5:30 PM on Wednesdays) on March 12, 19 and 26.

During our search for a Pastor, we have beenvery blessed with great pulpit-supply Pastors.

We have received a number of applicantsfor our pastoral position. Once received, the CallCommittee then embarks on screening theapplications to get them down to a workablenumber. The next step in the process is to invitewhat we consider the best applicants to meet you

and preach. Thus far we have invited Pastor KentGrothe and his wife Kay and at the end of Februarywe had Pastor Steve Bruer and his wife Jane visit us.

The Call Committee asks for your continuedsupport and prayer as this is a very importantdecision for our spiritual lives as well as the life of our church.

Milbank Area Diabetes Support group will meetat 6:30 on Sunday, March 19. Join us for an

hour of fellowship where we’ll share some tips tohelp control blood sugars.

YOUTH

YOUTH NEWSALifelight concert was held at the Milbank

High School Theater on Wednesday, Feb. 8. A large number of students attended the

event that included music by Remedy Drive andBobby Bugottii. Speaker Josh Brewer gave aninspirational message to the crowd, and BMX bikersentertained throughout the night. The 3rd through6th grade Living Word kids met at the church forsupper and attended the concert together. The localFCA Chapter (Fellowship of Christian Athletes)provided a pizza supper at Milbank High School formiddle and high school students prior to theconcert. It was a fun evening with a great messagefor Milbank and the surrounding area youth!

The First Communion classes for third graders willbe held during the regular Sunday School time onSunday mornings: (not at 5:30 PM on Wednesdays)on March 12, 19 and 26.



As our circles continue the BIBLE STUDYLESSONS about the story of Jonah, we findJonah finally accepting God’s will. God used

dramatic means in working to change his heart.Jonah had been afraid to obey what God instructedhim to do. He feared what the future would hold forhim if he did what God was asking him to do. Noneof us knows what the future holds. What is ahead forour country? What will a new pastor be like? Can wecontinue to enjoy spring-like weather or will we geta wintry blast in the coming days and weeks? Just letus remember that God is still in control ofeverything!

MARCH will be a busy month forwomen of Living Word Church.LENT begins on the first, and wewill have Wednesday eveningservices starting on March 1 with Ash Wednesday.Starting on March 8, we will havea meal served at 5:00 PM, prior tothe service at 6:30. The March 8supper will be served by church council,and the circles will take turns serving thesuppers on the following four Wednesdays.

March 7 is the women’s quarterly GENERALMEETING beginning with a soup luncheon at 11:30AM. Circles will be providing decorations, devotions,music and food. All women and men of thecongregation are invited to join us. Following thelunch, we will have a presentation by Julie Becker,Executive Director of St. Francis House in Sioux Falls.She will tell us about the mission of St. Francis House

and answer any questions we may have.

Support for St. Francis House is our MISSIONPROJECT for January through April of this year. A listof needed items can be found in our Sundaybulletins. Remember also our continuing MissionProjects: quilting, plastic bags, t-shirts and pillowcasedresses.

CIRCLESmeet on the third Tuesday of the month,March 21, at 7:30 and 9:00 AM and 7:30 PM. Allwomen are invited and welcome to join or visit a

circle and grow in faith with regular Bible studiesas well as to enjoy the fellowship of

others. Faith Circle is in charge ofproviding cookies for the nursing

home in March.

A CHILDREN’S BOOK, FarmerHerman and the Flooding Barn,written by Jason Weber, son of

Don and Carol, is now availableon the card display rack. It is an

inspiring story of people workingtogether to solve a very big problem.

The cost of the book is $15, of which $5 will bedonated to Living Word Lutheran Women’sorganization.

Blessings to all as we focus on our Lord and Savior’spath to the cross in the upcoming weeks.

Living Word Lutheran Church Council Minutes,February 9, 2017

Members Present: Brad Leonard, Larry Olson, DaveHepper, Roger Christensen, Mary Kinder, Brad Olsonand Roslyn Reich.

President Dave Hepper opened the meeting withprayer. Meeting was called to order.

Added to the agenda: The council meeting wasrescheduled from February 15 to February 9; AshWednesday and Lenten services are to be discussed;a request has been received to use our church for awedding; and a Community Outreach project forLenten services will be discussed.

Secretary’s reportwas approved.

Treasurer’s reportwas approved.

Property reportwas given by Brad Olson. Researchregarding cost and size will continue for a screen tobe installed in the back of the church.

Worship and Evangelism reportwas given byRoger Christensen and Roslyn Reich. Communionwas given to 11 shut-ins by Roger and TammyChristensen and Roslyn Reich. We discussed Pastorswho will be providing services for Ash Wednesday,Maundy Thursday and Good Friday Services. Rogerhas materials ordered for Lenten services to bereviewed. For the Lenten evening meals, we willfollow as last year. The council will provide the firstLenten Day meal, and the circles will provide theremaining four meals. The list for lectors and ushersis on the table for volunteer sign up and is availableto servant teams to use when lectors and/or ushersare needed.

Youth and Education reportwas given by BradOlson and Mary Kinder. It is time to register forSummer Bible Camp at NeSoDak. Information withvarious camps and pricing will be available February15. For information contact Mary Kinder or registeron losd.org and click on “NeSoDak” under summercamp. Brian Sandvig will be teaching FirstCommunion classes to the 3rd grade youth.

OLD BUSINESS: About 14 youth 3rd through 6th from our churchattended the Life Light event. Movie night was asuccess with 18-20 people attending. The Back-Packprogram was well attended with four youth and fourmentors participating.

The website is up and running. Members of ourchurch are encouraged to use this valuable tool.Nancy Kruger will be purchasing a camera to beused for events for the website and newsletter.

Members of our church were given theopportunity to meet Pastor Kent and Kay Groethe.Following the service and sermon given by PastorGroethe, a pot luck was enjoyed by all.

NEW BUSINESS:A request to use our church and kitchen for awedding was discussed. The council approved thisrequest.

The Broken Way Bible study group proposed acommunity outreach project of filling bags with aschedule of Lenten and Easter services and a plate ofgoodies. Bags are to be distributed by churchmembers to the community. The council approved.

The Call Committee continues to move forwardinterviewing potential pastors. They will be callingupon pastors to provide services for Ash Wednesday,Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

The next council meeting will be Wednesday, March15, at 7:00 PM. Meeting adjourned.
