    Longacre Hunts Annual Beach Hunt

    Sport Spotlight: Foxhunting

    Fox hunting is an activity

involving the tracking and chase ofquarry by trained scent hounds, anda group of unarmed followers led bya master of foxhounds, who followthe hounds on horseback.

    Fox hunting originated in the

United Kingdom in the 16th centuryand spread over the world, includingAustralia, Canada, France, Ireland,Italy and the United States.According to the Masters ofFoxhounds Association of America,Englishman Robert Brooke was thefirst man to import hunting hounds toAmerica, bringing his pack offoxhounds to Maryland in 1650 alongwith his horses.

In current times, the actual killingof the quarry is strongly discouragedand instead a scented lure on a 4x4is utilized. The Longacre Hunt club, which Amanda Uechi Ronanparticipates in, is a chase only hunt.

The Opening Hunt for the2013-2014 season is October 26th.Longacre runs three fields during ahunt. The third field is Walk/Trot/NoJumping, though horse and ridershould be comfortable riding in open

spaces. Each hunt is 8 to 10 mileslong and moves at a quick pace.Western riders welcome!

    Recap - Cross Country

    Breed Spotlight: Friesian

The Friesian is a horse breedoriginating in Friesland, Netherlands.

    Although the breed's conformation

resembles that of a light draft horse,Friesians are graceful and nimble fortheir size. During the Middle Ages, itis believed that the ancestors ofFriesian horses were in greatdemand as war horses throughoutcontinental Europe. Through theEarly Middle Ages and High Middle

Ages, their size enabled them tocarry a knight in armor. In the LateMiddle Ages, heavier, draft typeanimals were needed. Though the

breed nearly became extinct on morethan one occasion, the modern dayFriesian horse is growing in numbersand popularity, used both in harnessand under saddle. Most recently, thebreed is being introduced to the fieldof dressage.

For more information check out theFriesian Horse Association.

    Training Challenge:Establishing Rhythm

    1. On the Ground - Groom in a

rhythmic way. Think would I w

a person to touch me like this?

    when brushing. Stay soft.

    2. Under Saddle - Check your

position! If you are slouching in

chair seat with your leg out in fr

of your seat bones a bit, you wi

    behind the horse's motion,

encourage him to scoot or run,

interrupt his rhythm. If you are

    collapsed in your mid-section o

    tilting your head and shoulders

forward, you will be ahead of hi

    motion, blocking good rhythm.

    3. On the Longe - Finding

    someone to longe you regularly

    a rhythmic horse helps immens

to develop the correct feel for

    rhythmic motion and relaxed

    muscles.

Always keep in mind that rhythm

the mother of all the other traini

skills your horse must master. S

when your ride starts going badrhythm is the 'reset button' you

use to put things right again.
