Editors Note CELEBRATING SINGLE FATHERS Norma Rodriguez Wagner Editor in Chief

I dedicate this issue of Living Single to all the single dads that have truly made an impact in the lives of their children. Being a parent is tough enough, but to do it alone is even harder. School work, activities, laundry, cookingthe list can go on and on. But, to do all of that and to truly care, listen and encourage, exemplifies the many qualities of a GREAT dad. Many kids have grown up without ever having a father present in their lives, or have had a father present, but the daily grind of work and life consumed all their time. We are dealt a hand in life sometimes, that may include great memories with our fathers and other times we care not to look back. Whatever the case may be for you, let us recognize those fathers that chose to be present and available to their kids regardless of their circumstances. Kudos to the fathers this Father's Day, that truly signify what being an incredible father means. I salute those dads that love unconditionally, encourage always, uplift constantly and influence the lives of their kids significantly. May Love Find You!

When considering this months article in celebration of single fathers, I immediately thought of the most remarkable single father story I have ever heard. Seven years ago, my girlfriends husband shared a heartbreaking story with me regarding his business associate and personal friend. His friend Greg had the unenviable job of carrying his forty-two year old wife out of their home for the last time and taking her to the hospital where she would die days later of cancer. She had two children from a previous marriage. The birth father; however, never permitted Greg to legally adopt the children. It is also worth noting, that the birth father refused to share any financial responsibility for his two childrensad, but true. When Greg exited through the revolving doors of the hospital for the last time, his world had also revolved and had been turned inside out. He was suddenly a widower and a single father of two young children. His job now was to share the news of their mothers death and try to pick up the pieces and move forward as a single father. Where does one begin? There are no manuals to guide anyone through such a radical and life-altering experience. Greg began one day at a time, one piece at a time. There were groceries to be purchased, laundry to be done, a home to be cleaned and yes, two children to be cared for and loved who longed for a mother who was never coming home. The children had to be fed, homework had to be checked and rides given to school and doctor appointments. In the midst of juggling these daily activities, Greg continued to run and maintain a growing business with fifty employees who had needs and requests of their own. When asked, What was the most difficult part of parenting two children on your own? Greg responded, You feel so isolated and so alone. People do not know what to say, so they simply do not say anything. They slowly back away and the casseroles and cards stop coming. Soon it is just you and the kids. You realize it is all on you. What strikes me about his statement and what I hope strikes you is that we never know the secret pain and the heartache that our neighbor is carrying and often carrying alone. We have become so politically correct in our questions that we fail to ask the most obvious and caring question, How can I help you? We can leave out our advice and simply ask, What does support look like for you, from me, during this time? Then, just listen and respond with action.

Getting back to our story, the birth father decided several months after Gregs wife passed that he wanted full custody of his then ten year old daughter; however, he did not want the responsibility of raising his then thirteen year old son. No, I did not make this up. Yes, it is cruel and unthinkable. The point however of this article is not to judge the so called birth father, rather it is to honor the real man and the real fatherGreg. Happy Fathers Day to an unsung hero who raised two children as if they were his own and did it without the expectation of accolades or recognition. He did it because he was the real father. Happy Fathers Day to all the unsung heroes out there that are doing the best they can because they can and because the job needs to be done.

  • 1 Always warm-up! Whether you are cycling, running, or getting ready

to play on your softball league, its always a good idea to start out at

a slower pace for about 3-5 minutes at the beginning of your

workout. If you can, you should also perform a few dynamic stretches

after your warm-up, especially if you tend to have stiff hamstrings,

tight calves, or other areas that are a concern for injury. Some good

stretches would include arm swings, walking lunges, and calf-raises.

2 As important as warming up is at the beginning of every workout,

cooling down afterwards is equally as important. Spend a few

minutes going at a slower pace until your heart rate decreases and

you are breathing normally. This is also the time to include some

static stretches to stretch out your hamstrings, quads, lower back,

and shoulders. This is important for muscle recovery as well as to

decrease the chance of cramping up soon after your workout.

    6 5 4 3

Although some people find motivation by listening to music while working out, it should be stressed that listening to iPod or MP3 players

while outside should be eliminated. Its important to stay aware of your environment around you, whether it is traffic, dogs, or other people.

Even at a low level, listening to music will dramatically decrease your opportunity to prevent a collision or unfortunate accident. Take out the

ear buds and listen to the sounds of nature around you!

Take special precaution if you are outside at night. If you are cycling, walking, or running at night, be sure to wear something on your clothing

that is reflective. It should be more visible than a simple stripe on your shoes. Try a reflective vest or a brightly colored or neon hat. In addition,

wearing a tag on your shoes that contains pertinent information is a good idea if you should ever be in a situation where you are unable to

speak to emergency technicians. You can find road tags that go around your wrist, or on your shoelaces at www.roadid.com. These tags can

be personalized with your contact information, and any other medical conditions that would need to be addressed if you are ever involved in an

accident. Better to be safe than sorry!

I know youre excited to be outside after months of being locked up inside but easy does it! Remember, Rome wasnt built in a day. Start out

slow and build up your progression gradually. If you are just starting to run, try not to increase your weekly mileage by more than 10% each

week. If you add more than that, you could be at an increased risk of injury that will leave you sidelined indefinitely. Give your body a

chance to adapt to the increased demands that you are giving it.

Drink, drink, drink! Water is the most essential ingredient to a healthy life. Our bodies are made up of 65 percent water. Being dehydrated by

even 2 percent can decrease performance by 10 percent. So it is important to stay hydrated before, during, and after your workout. You

should always stay hydrated when you exercise but when you are outside in warm weather, its even more important to replenish the fluids in

your body that are lost through normal sweating. Two to three hours prior to a workout, drink two to three cups of water. During your workout

aim to drink one-half cup of water every 15-20 minutes throughout your training session; particularly in warmer temperatures. During your

post-workout recovery, don't forget to recover with two to three cups of water. Replace each pound of body weight lost during your workout

with at least two cups of water.

    SAFETY TIPS FOR

    THE WEEKEND

    WARRIOR

By Angie Jones | [email protected]

    www.fitbusinesswoman.com

If you live in the northern part of the country, you may have spent the last few months cursing the cold weather and

completing your workouts in the gym, at home, or maybe even at a fitness boot camp class like mine! Perhaps you even got

your workout shoveling the snow from your drivewayseveral times. But at the first signs of spring, there seems to be a rush

of winter-white athletes in shorts and tank tops who are anxious to get rid of stifling cabin fever in favor of spring fever.

After all, what is better than getting outside in the fresh air, feeling the warm sun on your face and listening to the sounds of

nature after a long, cold winter? However, these athletes often forget simple safety tips that kept them safe in their homes but

may pose challenges when on the open road. This seems like a good time to renew some safety tips to keep you free from

incident and injury for many more workouts to come!

And remember, as drivers behind the wheel, we should also be more aware of cyclists and runners and be willing to share the road with them and keep a safe distance from them as much as possible. Hopefully these tips will help you enjoy your outside workout this season while ensuring that you stay safe and injury free! Angie

Smooth Transitions to Healthier Eating By Kathy Snyder RD LD CDE CPT, NASM

Don't even fathom that you can adopt Panera's latest polished smoothie creation or figure out the technique for making a Pina Colada.

You remember surfing or browsing through the local newspaper website on your lunch hour when the column "Recipe Swap"

appeared under the Lifestyle section. 1st recipe that caught your eye featured a kid's snack which resembled pop tarts. Wait a second-

-Didn't you print a recipe for pomegranate smoothies which was submitted by the National Dairy Council?

    Pomegranate Smoothie

    1 banana

    2 cups vanilla yogurt

    1 cup pomegranate juice

    Blend until smooth

As he devours this velvety drink which is a colossal success, stifle the urge to tell him that smoothie making is not your specialty.

Instead, listen for the exclamation "Wow, what a deal." Don't be bashful-Ask him out for a 3rd date.

You know that What You Eat is What You Are and focus on soy, garlic, spinach, almonds, broccoli, salmon, pomegranates,

blueberries and yes pumpkin may increase energy, help your body be resistant to disease and provide nutrients necessary for optimal

nutrition. Or you have heard that organic food may be superior, that one is to splurge on phytochemicals and antioxidants, Vitamin D

deficiency may be the next epidemic and that dark chocolate is now good for the heart.

Where does one start if the advantages of healthy eating become infectious?

Start with this basic smoothie recipe and then for some zing or boost to your immune system, start adding those top 10 nutrition

    powerhouses.

    Basic Smoothie

    2-3 cubes ice

    1 cup vanilla yogurt

    1 banana

    Fruit of your choice

    (mango, plum, peach, berries)

Blend all ingredients until well mixed

And if that date is kind of quirky, maybe consider a garlic smoothie!

    Continued on page 11

Did my interest in smoothies stem from the moment in an ICU when a hospital dietitian handed

me a Fractured Jaw Diet Guidelines pamphlet after I had orthognathic surgeryordecades

earlier when my mom, a home economics teacher and freelance newspaper writer, featured me (I

was in all the pictures) making eggnog from scratch at the age of three? The vast numbers of

recipes which promoted proper healing and pass easily through a straw as outlined in the

Fractured Jaw Diet were ignored as my daughter effortlessly said "We'll just throw together

    whatever crap we can find."

The less idle days of summer are here and that means star filled, romantic hot summer nights.

Years as a single person have empowered me with the wisdom to realize that after a "go for a walk

date" (AKA known as trudging around the terrain of one's subdivision boundaries) that a

refreshing smoothie might give the evening a boost.

Avert the mundane suggestion of the local smoothie shop which is notorious for smoothies with a

multitude of calories, hardly budget friendly and not as refreshing or decadent as something you

    will prepare.

This is no time to be original or ease into something gradually. Reassure him that you just "throw

ingredients together" and try not to appear intimidated by this undertaking.

    Continued from page 10

Many singles have children who, although unintended,

sometimes inspire them to reach for those long forgotten goals

and aspirations that they once vigilantly pursued.

My daughter who always begged me to request a gym waiver

from her much loved pediatrician, recently finished her 1st 5K

in record time. Now, if I plan to join (or beat her as I have

alluded to), in a future race, I had better start boning up on pre

and post recovery nutrition before I figure out the carbohydrate

to protein ratio which is essential to muscle recovery.

How do you achieve the stamina (let alone the motivation) to

execute some all consuming work-out routine necessary to

transform or reshape in order to be 5K or swimsuit ready?

Preparing pre or post workout yummy smoothies can be a

cinch, especially as fruits become more abundant. Even though

a single person's life can be jam-packed with projects and

agendas, taking time for a snack which contains carbohydrate

and protein will increase performance and endurance plus will

cause less misgivings as one makes lofty lifestyle changes.

You won't be in a dither with the intricacies of the BOSU ball if

you know that a post-workout smoothie awaits you. Try this

    recipe from Fitness Magazine

    Peanut Butter and Banana Smoothie

10 ounces skim or soy milk

    1 Tablespoon natural peanut butter

    1 medium banana

Combine all ingredients in a blender: mix until smooth.

May not give you the stamina for a 20 minute 5 K run, but will

give you the energy to reassess the running clinic's

    recommendations.

Don't be puzzled by the features of a blender. Blenders may

claim to have increased power, immersion hand sticks or vented

lids. Check in your kitchen cupboard before mulling over all the

options; some of us probably have a landmine of food processor

    type gadgets tucked away.

Are You Missing the Mark on Your Marketing?

By Marla Tabaka | [email protected] www.MarlaTabaka.com

Recently, Ive been doing a lot of research and attending

conferences on the very hot marketing to women topic.

Research studies are in and the results are mind-

boggling. Have we been totally missing the mark on our

marketing efforts over the years? Well, according to these

    studies we have.

Did you know that women are responsible for a whopping 80% of the purchases around the world, thereby driving the entire global consumer economy? Yup, you read that right. But how can that be when it appears that men are the ones pulling out the credit card in the checkout line? These studies look much deeper than the name on the credit card; they are looking at the core of the decision-making itself. Aside from the fact that women are marrying later in life and divorce in the over-50 sector is on the rise, leaving more and more women in the independent decision-making role, a conversation between couples might look like this: Woman Honey the refrigerator went out today, I think we need a new one. Man Why dont you just call a repair person? Woman Weve had it repaired twice, we need a new one. Man Fine. Woman OK, I want one with xyz features on it. Man How much will that cost? Woman Ive done all the research and . Man Uh-huh, when is it being delivered? . OK, they might actually go to the store together, but you get the point. We also know that things like the purchase of homeowners and health insurance, home improvement decisions and even family auto choices are driven by women. What about the baby and juvenile market? Its huge! Yes, also driven by women. And guys, when was the last time you went clothes shopping? Your wife has great taste, doesnt she?

So why is the majority of advertising geared toward the male consumer? Because over 70% of it is created by the male creative who has been misinformed. Im not saying that men are incapable of designing advertising and marketing campaigns that appeal to the female demographic, certainly they are. But what I am saying is that the research needs to get out there and be assimilated in a very different way. Its important to know that the male and female brains are physiologically very different. Therefore, the visuals, colors and scripting that are used in commercials, websites and marketing materials will push different buttons in the brain of a male versus the female consumer. What advertising execs might find humorous is often appalling to the woman who will decide if their clients product enters the home. Naturally, everyone has their own, unique taste and personality, so we cant say all women or all men when we cite these studies, but what we do know is that much of our advertising is off the mark. One example of off-the-mark advertising is the post-it ad that appeared in national magazines. Who buys post-its? Think about itThe female office manager, the busy mom, the stay at home mom who has a home office or the wife who is running household errands. In this ad, we see a good-looking couple asleep as the morning sunlight pours into the bedroom. The man in the ad is sleeping sexily along side of a pretty woman with get this a post-it note with her name on it plastered to her forehead. Ok, who finds this funny? Not the woman whos on her way to Office Depot after an evening out with her boyfriend, thats for sure. creating a marketing campaign? Continued on page 13

    www.LivingSingleInAmerica.com

continued from page 12 Dont strive for customer satisfaction. Women find this boring. We want stories to tell, we want to be wowed so we can talk to our friends about it and spread the word! We want to know that your product or service is good for our family, safe for the environment, dependable and a good value. We want details on the important things. We dont want silly, slapstick or off color innuendos in your marketing materials. We dont want to play cute games on your website; we dont have the time because we are busy driving the global economy! Utilize pictures that touch the heart, show community commitment and a caring sense of commitment to, not only your customers, but the world around them. Instead of a set of before and after pictures of your remodeling work, add warmth with family and decorative items in the after picture. Instead of seeing your female demographic as just a mom depict her as an intelligent, busy (women love to achieve the social status symbol of busy) and a powerful decision-maker. Understand that she can fix a toilet, work a full time job, raise a family AND possess a sexy, beautiful and loving aura at the end of the day. She is superwoman. Run your marketing materials by all of the women in your life and listen to them! Women know what they like. And if your current materials seem to be doing the job take another look and ask yourself if you could be missing an opportunity to go from doing the job to hitting the bulls-eye. What would that do for your bottom line? ------------------------------------------------------------------- For more great information that can transform your image and

Roth IRAs Powerful Planning Tools for All Generations By David Herbst, CFP, MS, MBA - [email protected] - www.HerbstFinancial.com

Roth IRAs for Minors One of the main contributors to successful retirement planning is time the more of it you have, the better the result. For this reason alone, setting up a Roth IRA for a child can be one of your best long-term planning strategies. When investment compounding has upwards of 50 years to run its course, even a relatively modest savings rate can produce substantial wealth. There is no minimum age requirement for opening a Roth IRA, and many IRA providers will accept accounts for minors. In most cases, the only real issue is whether the child has taxable earned income. Fortunately there is no requirement that the same "earned income" is the money that funds the IRA. If your child earned income from a summer or part-time job, but then spent it, there is no restriction on using money provided by parents to establish and fund the IRA account. You can contribute up to $5,000 to a Roth IRA in 2009 as long as your child earned at least that much. However, contributions cannot exceed your child's income for the year. Contributions to a Roth IRA are not tax deductible, but earnings are never taxed provided your child meets the distribution requirements chief among them waiting until at least 59 before tapping the account.

1 While he or she probably cannot imagine ever being that old, there are other

ways to put Roth IRA savings to good use prior to age 59 , such as the purchase of a first home. Wealth Transfer with a Roth IRA As effective a retirement planning tool as a Roth IRA can be, its greatest strength may be its potential as a wealth transfer instrument. Unlike traditional IRAs, minimum distributions are not required from Roth IRAs once the owner reaches age 70 . Therefore, a child theoretically could have held a Roth IRA his or her entire life never having tapped into it and then pass it on to his or her beneficiaries upon death. At this point the account would fall under the same minimum withdrawal rules that pertain to traditional IRAs. However, beneficiaries may choose to string out those withdrawals over many years, continuing to earn tax-free income on the remaining account balance. The hidden value of the Roth IRA is its exceptional growth potential. If heirs decide to spend or withdraw Roth IRA assets immediately upon inheritance, the Roth's strategic value as a wealth transfer tool is lost. If however, they choose to let the Roth IRA continue to grow and only withdraw what is required by law each year, the true power of the Roth IRA can be realized. David is registered in the state of IL and 15 other states. If you are interested in more information, please contact him at:[email protected] David Herbst Herbst Financial Advisors [email protected] [email protected] 1Distributions from a Roth IRA may be tax free if you are at least 59 years old and have owned the Roth IRA for at least five years; your withdrawal of up to

$10,000 (lifetime limit) is applied to a first-time home purchase; or you die or become permanently disabled.

If the current income restrictions associated with Roth IRAs prevent you from using one for your own planning purposes, consider taking steps to ensure that your children or other younger family members establish and fund a Roth IRA of their own. Roth IRAs offer ample tax benefits for retirement particularly for younger investors. Yet perhaps the more long lasting benefit of the Roth IRA can be realized when it is used as a wealth transfer mechanism.

Now look at the second chart below. This particular market

established a high around the 88 level and a low at around the 80

level. As the market declines to the support level (80 level), it is

believed that demand will overcome supply and prevent the price

from falling below support. Expect the price to bounce higher.

This is when you would buy. As the market advances to the

established resistance level (88 level), it is believed that supply

will overcome demand and prevent the price from rising above

resistance. Expect price to bounce lower. This is when you

would sell. Remember to always use a protective Stop-loss to

    limit your risk.

The more often a level of support or resistance is tested and holds

(price does not break through), the greater the strength of that

level. On the other hand, if the price breaks through either of these

levels, support then becomes resistance and resistance then

    becomes support.

Support and Resistance levels are usually where the institutional

traders (big banks and other large players) are waiting to enter and

exit trades. These market players understand the power and

importance these levels play and use them to their advantage.

The examples above show where prices stalled at the different

S&R levels. This offers an excellent chance for a trader to enter

and exit a trade and the odds of entering into a profitable trade are

increased greatly. With a bit of practice, you'll be able to pull up

any stock, commodity or forex chart and within seconds

    determine the S&R.

Before you enter your trade, always evaluate where the Support

and Resistance are. They WILL affect price, which in turn affects

your trade. Don't fight what the chart is telling you. Use the chart

as a map to help you make a profit in the market.

In my next article, I will discuss another method that will aid you

in entering and exiting a market. Its one of the most popular and

easy to use tools available to the technical analyst.

As always... if you have any questions about anything I covered,

feel free to email me below.

    [email protected]

Ive been receiving a lot of emails asking me to give an

example of a trading technique that shows when to get in and

out of a trade. Writing about day trading is one thing, but

teaching you an actual trade you can do yourself is what we

really want to learn, right? Ok... let me give you a trade

    technique for beginners.

Support & Resistance (S&R) are two of the most basic, yet

effective technical patterns. They are a natural part of any

market whether you trade forex, the indices, commodity

futures, options or stocks. S&R represents key junctures where

the forces of supply and demand meet and often act as decisive

trend changers. They appear on a chart as horizontal trend

lines that cause a markets direction to reverse (usually, but not

always). In any financial market, prices are driven by

excessive supply and demand. Supply is associated with the

terms bearish, bears and selling. Demand is associated with

the terms bullish, bulls and buying. Get familiar with these

terms! As demand increases, prices are bullish and go up and

as supply increases, prices are bearish and go down. When

supply and demand are equal, prices move sideways as the

bulls and bears slug it out for control.

Look at the chart below. When looking at a chart and price

falls, support acts like a floor and represents the point when

theres more buyers than sellers and prices reverse and go up.

Conversely, when the price on a chart rises, resistance acts like

a ceiling and is the point when theres more sellers than buyers

and the prices reverse and go down.

For a beginner trader, this is a safe, low risk and easy way to

identify a trade when looking at a chart. Just about every

technical trading system or method uses S&R and being aware

of their location can greatly enhance analysis and forecasting

abilities. Just understand that technical analysis is not an exact

science and sometimes its difficult to set exact S&R points, so

most traders establish general levels and not exact points.

Home Buying 101 (Top Home Buying Mistakes) By Chris Leschkies | [email protected]

One of the most important and expensive investments one will make during their lifetime is the purchase of a home. It is crucial to be fully educated and prepared to help make sure your transaction goes smoothly without any problems. Just one error could prove to be a disaster. Nothing is more heartbreaking than to lose the home of your dreams because of mistakes that could easily have been avoided. It is for this reason that I have decided to focus on common mistakes buyers make to help prevent them from happening to you. First and foremost, it is important to find yourself a knowledgeable and trustworthy realtor, lender, attorney, and inspector BEFORE you begin your search. Buying a home is a complex transaction and should be a team effort. One of the most costly mistakes a buyer can make is altering their financial situations prior to closing. I recently had a buyer who was pre-approved with great credit and who easily qualified for the necessary loan to purchase. About 2 weeks before closing they went and purchased a new car through financing. The new debt to income ratios meant they no longer qualified for the loan. Luckily they were able to borrow the necessary money from a relative to continue with the purchase. To avoid this from happening to you please DO NOT finance or use your credit to make substantial purchases once youve completed your loan application. Wait until after you get the house to do some spending. Even the slightest alteration in your credit ratios could cause an underwriter to throw your loan out and deny it. Believe it or not, the most common mistake a buyer will make is buying the wrong house for their specific situation. It is important to figure out what home features are most important and which you cannot live without. You wouldnt believe how many buyers let a family member or friend influence their purchase more than they should. YOU are the one that will be living there, not them. It is very important to make sure the home fits YOUR needs, and not theirs. While home buying can be a very exciting time, it is important to never let your emotions completely dictate your decisions and/or cloud your judgment. Stay practical and realistic during the home buying process. You must be completely comfortable with the purchase price of the home and with your subsequent monthly mortgage payments. You do not want to lose the house to foreclosure because you can no longer afford to pay off your mortgage. Again, DO NOT let emotions cloud your judgment. Buy more than you can afford and your dream home will quickly become your worst nightmare. Your total monthly debts, including your mortgage, should not exceed 36 percent of your income before taxes. Another mistake is to avoid changing job positions if you dont have to. Loan underwriters are as strict as ever and like to see job consistency verses constant change when deciding whether to approve an application. If it is possible, try to tough it out at the job until after your home purchase, otherwise you may need to re-apply for a loan. Also, dont forget to take care of your end of the deal. You must be on the same page as the lender. This means to provide them with the necessary paperwork in a timely manner. Failure to do so may prolong or even prevent you from closing. Lastly, make sure you have the utilities activated BEFORE you close. The utility company may need a couple of days to switch the service. Do not wait until the day of closing to make the call or else you may be spending the first night in complete darkness. It is very important to avoid these common buyer mistakes when purchasing your home. Educating yourself on the home buying process will ensure a smooth transaction and allow you to close on your dream home. If you are interesting in purchasing a home, or just have general real estate questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Searching for a Realtor Look no further.

I have been in the real estate business since 2005, and currently employed at Coldwell Banker Residential in Orland Park. I find great

pleasure in really being able to help people who are in need of selling, buying, or renting a home. I believe that superb customer service

is the key to make any business successful. It is for this reason that I give each of my clients a commitment to always give 110% effort on

each transaction and go that extra mile. To go along with my second to none customer service, I also bring a vast knowledge of new

construction and everything that goes along with building a home as a result of working 5 years for my father who is a general contractor

in the southern suburbs of Chicago. This has allowed me to have a better understanding of what a quality home should look like, and to

point out the perks as well as flaws, that other agents may overlook. If you are looking to buy, sell, or rent residential as well as

commercial properties in the greater Chicagoland area, or have any general real estate questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. I

    NEW MUSIC SPOTLIGHT!

    KYLE KNUTSON

By Katelyn Hobson | Music & Entertainment Editor | [email protected]

Kyle Knutson is not just a singer/songwriter/guitarist hes an all-around musical craftsman. Heavily influenced by the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughn, Lyle Lovett and Delbert McClinton, Knutson is blending his blues with a smooth shot of both folk-pop and the classic country music he often listened to while growing up on his parents South Dakota farm.

This down-home blues sound is most recognizable in songs like The Wise Man, a second-hand narrative co-written with Austin Ellis that tells of a wise man preaching about a bad experience with the opposite sex, and A Woman Who Can Dance, the likely first single off of Knutsons upcoming self-produced album.

Knutson plays most of the instruments on the project, which is tentatively titled Wise Man. He also features award-winning bluegrass fiddler Stephanie Taylor on Caroline and Geoff Sprung providing upright bass on Love Yourself, one of a couple writing collaborations with Clay Evans.

Whether its playing Jazzfest in Sioux Falls (in 2007 and 2009) or the world-famous Bluebird Caf in his current home of Nashville, Knutson is capable of engaging audiences of all types and sizes with his laid-back soulful sound. If you want to catch him on the road, check out his website for all tour dates as well as news about the release date for Wise Man. The album will also be available for download on iTunes.

With the coming of June, the summer season has arrived, bringing with it a host of activities that have been on the back burner since last fall. That means that most of our music concerts move to outdoor venues and restaurants open their outdoor dining spaces. This months highlights give you the rundown on the venues hosting outdoor concerts and were offering just a sampling of restaurants with outside dining. Weve got the information you need to make the most of these wonderful days. So soak in the warm temperatures and celebrate in a traditional summer style.

    OUTDOOR SUMMER VENUES

Ravinia Each summer, Ravinia hosts well over 100 concert

events. While the acts are diverse; classical, jazz, pop, rock and

musical theater, just to name a few. This is one place which you

can always rely on quality performances. What makes the Ravinia

experience so special is the sophisticated picnic atmosphere.

Although Ravinia includes a 3,200-seat covered Pavilion, most

would agree the best way to enjoy a show is on the expansive lawn.

Here youll see all possible ways to relax while eating, from a

simple take-out meal in a paper bag on a big comfy blanket to a

culinary extravaganza with short tables covered with linen cloths.

There are far too many events this summer to list them all, so to

give you an idea of whats in store for summer 2011, well list a

few here. Be sure to check Ravinias web site to see the full

    calendar of events.

    06/10 The Judds

    06/30 Maroon 5

    07/16 Jennifer Hudson

First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre First Midwest, located south of

Chicago in Tinley Park, hosts some of the biggest names in music.

Park capacity is 28,000. Here is just a portion of this summers

    schedule:

    06/04 - Q101 Jamboree

    06/24 Rascal Flatts

    08/26 Kings of Leon

Charter One Pavilion This venue is located at the former Meigs

Field on the Chicago lakefront within the Museum Campus. The

pavilion seats 7,500. You can park at Soldier Field, and then take the

free shuttle to Adler Planetarium, which is near the venue. Heres

just a few of this venues performances:

    06/21 Earth, Wind and Fire

    07/16 Goo Goo Dolls

    08/20 Train

Two additional venues worth mentioning are just north of the

Illinois, in Wisconsin. First, at Alpine Valley Music Theatre located

in East Troy, WI, you can see Jimmy Buffett, Dave Matthews and

Pearl Jam. This venue has a 7,500 seat pavilion, plus a lawn capacity

of 37,000. Second, Milwaukees Summer fest will run from June

over 800 big-name, national and local bands on 11 stages, a variety

of food, beer and people-watching. The general admission fee

provides you access to the entire festival.

Anthonys Chop House located in Oak Brook's Doubletree

Hotel, isnt boisterous, crazy, or overdone. Yes it's a place to

go and eat for the business types of Oak Brook, but the menu

offers a decent selection of appetizers, salads, pastas and

entrees. Kids and gluten-free menus are also available.

Biaggis Ristorante Italiano resides in the heart of Naperville

and offers an extensive selection of house-made and imported

pastas, soups and salads, pizza, seafood, steaks and desserts.

They offer large portions of affordably priced menu

selections, which are served in a comfortable and relaxing

    environment.

If youre looking to get downtown, here are some

    suggestions:

Pegasus Restaurant and Taverna Pegasus, located in the

heart of Greektown, is an authentic Mediterranean restaurant.

Its rooftop veranda is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day

and serves a great variety of small plates, from traditional

Tzatziki to the Greek version of crab cakes known as

Kavourokeftedes. They feature a number of dessert creations,

such as a chocolate raspberry truffle mousse cake and

cinnamon walnut Baklava. The rooftop provides a nice view

of the Chicago skyline. Inside, Pegasus offers a full menu of

    Greek and Mediterranean cuisine.

Rivers Restaurant Located in the Mercantile Exchange

Building in the Loop, Rivers outdoor deck is on the Chicago

River with seating for 150. This restaurant has a fine menu of

steaks, seafood, and pasta. At lunchtime, they add sandwiches

and entre salads to the menu. The Charred Beef Salad is a

favorite. Rivers is the perfect spot for happy hour on the patio.

They feature live entertainment on the patio on Friday nights.

Fontana Grill & Wine Bar - This Uptown establishment has a

nice spacious dining patio and moderately priced Italian

cuisine. They have stone-fired pizzas, standard Italian fare

and even a burger with truffle fries. You can try a different

number of wines; they have a mix-and-match program where

you can order your wine by the ounce for tastings.

  • Name: Catherine McMillan

    Age: 45

    Status: Single

A little about me: I was born and raised here in Illinois. Come from a wonderful, normal-to-mildly-dysfunctional

family with 4 brothers and 9 nieces and nephews. Half my family is here and half in San Diego,

CA. Divorced and do not have children (would have liked to have had them, but it just did not

work out that way). Enjoy my career as a Physical Therapist. Try to spend as much of my free

time with friends and family. When time permits, I work on my bucket list!

    How I feel about living

    single and the issues

    single Americans face:

I am very happy to see a magazine dedicated to single people. At my age, most of my friends

are married and I am somewhat of a minority of sorts. Where once I had a spouse to share all of

lifes responsibilities, struggles, obligations, etc. now I must rely on myself. Sometimes that can be difficult and many people think, hey, you have it great because you just have to worry about yourself. What they do not realize is that there is comfort and security in facing life with a partner. When you are solo you do not have a second opinion on choices you make about

major issues influencing your life, such as finance, health, employment, etc. It can be a little

scary at times, so it is nice to have a resource that offers opinions on issues that are current and

    applicable to single people.

    My hobbies and interests

    include:

I bike as much as I can in the warm months, hit the gym a few times a week, just started tennis

lessons, assistant teach a class 2 nights a week, love wine tastings, trying new restaurants,

summer festivals, having friends over to BBQ.

    The one place on earth

Id like to visit: Italy! The food, wine, architecture, and history all look so amazing! I need to see it up close and

    personal.

To relax and unwind I: In the winter I park it on my comfy sofa with a good glass of red wine, some popcorn and a

movie. In the summer I enjoy sitting outside with friends and just talking about whatever comes

to mind (with some good wine, of course).

Favorite music: I like all kinds of music except heavy metal and cry in your beer country.

Favorite song: Too many to pick just one and it is always changing.

Favorite Pastime: I dont get to do it as often as I would like, but watching my nieces and nephews playing their sports, cheer, dance, etc. or listening to them talk about whatever is the latest and greatest

going on in their lives. I get such a kick out of their personalities and watching them grow.

Favorite Sports Team: Da Bears of course!

    My thoughts on the

    current state of the

    economy

Taxes up, food prices up, gasoline up, unemployment up, property values down, 401K

    down.need I say more?

    People or things who

    inspire me are:

People that inspire me are those that make you want to be a better person. People that give of

themselves not for the recognition, but because they truly care. When you are around these type

of people it grounds you, makes you remember what is important in life and inspires you to do

the same. Things that inspire mewell, I am addicted to HGTV and it always inspires me to start one home improvement project or another. They make it look so easy!

CHANGE YOUR HAIR ~ CHANGE YOUR LIFE By Ann Cheladyn | HAIR (Beauty|Fashion|Hair|Skin | [email protected]

Okay, maybe that statement is a bit dramatic, but getting a makeover can be an extremely

uplifting experience. For many of us, the arrival of spring brings instant excitement. We

cant wait to get outside, open our windows, and feel that nice warm sun we have been

missing all winter. Spring also seems to awaken that little voice inside to try some new or

do something different. Long hair goes short and those who wanted red in the fall now

want the beautiful blonde that says warm weather is here!

Believe it or not there are steps to making a big change. First, we talk ourselves into it. We

weigh the options of keeping the long hair and ponytail or taking it short for that 5 minute

sassy style. Second, we start looking at EVERYONES hair. Pictures in magazines, online,

TV, and people in the grocery store all become our obsession for that perfect look. Third,

we make the big appointment. Now is when our nerves take over. Should I cancel? Can I

go through with it? Will it look good on me?

Suddenly the trust weve had in the stylist who has done our hair for years disappears. Can he/she do this cut? What if he/she has never

done a color like this? What if it is too light or too dark? Next is appointment day. We show up at the salon with a stomach full of

butterflies. Were excited and terrified all at the same time. And finally, there you are, looking at a different person in the mirror. A

feeling of satisfaction comes over us. We made the decision to do something different and followed through with it. We feel triumphant

and proud that we tried something new, and had the courage to make a change.

Change can be scary, especially when it involves our hair. Do you have any idea how many clients tell us finding a new stylist

is scarier than going to a new doctor? We have to walk around with this on our heads where everyone can see it better look darn good!

There are a few things to remember when heading to the salon for your new do.

1.) Bring Pictures. Something visual is always easier to understand. Short to one person may be medium length to another. Make sure

you and your stylist are on the same page before you get started.

2.) Inform your stylist beforehand. When making your appointment, tell the receptionist that you are planning to change your cut or

color. They should add some extra time for a consultation to your appointment. Changes always take a little longer. This will allow

your stylist to relax and do it right, and not rush through their work. Believe me, they WILL appreciate the heads-up. You never

know, they may even have some new ideas waiting for you when you get there.

3.) Be prepared to try a new product. Yes, it really does make a difference. There is a reason there are so many different types of styling

products-they each do something different. If you want to create the same look at home, you need the right tools. Ever see the girls

who try to do the flippy, spunky, short cut with pink gel and Aqua Net? It ends up looking like a sticky, gooey, hot mess! They

most definitely need a texture product to create that look.

4.) Understand the difference between your hair and that of the model in the picture youve brought in. Many times clients with fine,

thin hair pick a picture of a model with thick or naturally wavy hair and want that style. A good stylist will explain to them that their

hair will not look exactly like the picture or that style just cant be created on their hair and look good. Others may not. I would

suggest covering your bases by asking will my hair do that? This will help to open that conversation and get their opinion.

So what are the latest trends in styles and colors? Well, my personal opinion is still anything goes. To me, complimenting your face

shape and hair type is the most important thing to remember. Now, there are some exceptions to the anything goes theory. The

sausage roll or tidal wave bangs are still definite no-nos and long hair is only pretty when it is in good shape. If you can see through it,

get rid of it! There are some definite styling trends happening now; anything soft and natural, touchable hair, not stiff and sticky. Very

natural highlights versus chunky streaks with lots of contrast seem to be more popular. Hollywood Glam is a look many of the

platform stylists are talking about; long hair with some wave instead of the stiffer, straighter looks of the past few years. Guys, the

Bieber is out, the classic All American Guy look is definitely back.

Overall, your new look should be something you are comfortable with and fits your lifestyle. Should you make a change? Is it time?

Well, if you have been wearing your hair the same for over 5 years Id say, yep, youre dueover 10? Most definitely some updating is

needed15 or more? You shouldnt even be asking! Most of all dont just make a change for the sake of image. Do it for your spirit.

Conquer that fear of change and feel great about it. Have fun and enjoy it!

  • Finding a good suit is a task in itself. Men have different

body types and when it comes to suits, they must be fitted

and tailored by a professional. A tailored suit will make a

bold statement. Here are some tips to make sure you wow

    the masses:

You should always make sure your suit has been fits

and tailored to your body type.

Get a suit that is right for the occasion, you dont

want to wear a 1930s Zoot suit to a business function

and you definitely dont want to wear a Tuxedo to

    religious services.

If you happen to be one of those persons who do not

wears suits often; the best starter suit is a black suit

with a single breasted jacket. This is more

fashionable and you can never go wrong with black.

I personally like double breasted suits because to me

the overall fit is better. It also provides a better view

of the tie. This leads to my next point! In order to

stand out in a suit, you must have the right tie to

compliment and accessorize the look. Every aspect

of the suit, from the buttons to the seam, and even

the color of the shirt should look pulled together and

    coordinated.

The most recent best characteristic of the suit is the

option to get a solid color or pinstriped suit. You will

definitely stand out and make a statement in a

pinstriped suit. No matter whom you are or what

size you were, pinstripes are always your friend. So,

know your body type, suit style preference and

occasion because when you put it all together you

will look stunning, professional and fashion forward

    in every way.

    Dear Sunny,

Im embarrassed that Im writing you but being a guy isn't

easy and I need some advice. My sister saw your last article

and shes been bugging me to write you, so here I am.

I met a girl on a dating site and we dated for 5 months. I

thought everything was going great with us until she broke up

with me a few weeks ago. She said she broke up with me

because I never told her what I was thinking or how I felt and

that she was tired of playing the guessing game with me.

I never told her that I loved her because I think I was afraid of

making a commitment. I do love her and I regret that I never

told her that. I dont know how to move on and I dont think I

    will ever get over her.

Maybe its a guy thing but Ive never been good at sharing my

feelings with anyone. I dont know what to say to change her

mind. I dont want to look like an idiot because I dont know if

she would even take me back. I cant imagine my life without

    her, any advice?

    Brad - Desperate in NC

    Dear Brad,

I am so glad that you took the time to write me and it sounds

like you have a great sister who really cares for you. There is

no reason to feel embarrassed; it takes a strong man to speak

his truth! Im sure there are a lot of men out there going

through a break up and this might help them to get through it

    too!

If you truly love this woman then I WOULD CALL HER

NOW and ask her to meet with you, so you can talk. It may be

challenging to share your feelings with her but take courage as

your partner, speak to her from your heart and tell her that you

    love her!

You are not an idiot when you love someone enough, to put your

pride aside and share your true feelings with them. You may feel

like youd rather eat rocks! BUT do it anyways! The pain of regret

is far greater than the pain of courage. It is better to live with

knowing, you did it than regretting that you didn't!

Courage never replaces fear - Courage is the ACTION you must

    take in spite of fear!

Being honest and telling the truth about anything, sets you free.

Regardless, if she changes her mind or not, I think it is important

that you share your feelings with her...put it ALL on the table!

It can be difficult for any of us to be authentic and share our feelings

with someone but if you love her...do it! Try writing down what you

want to say to her and practice it out loud. This will help! Even if

you have to read your thoughts and feelings to her from a piece of

    paper...do it!

If she is respective and you are willing to continue to work on

sharing how you feel with her...thats great! If she is not willing to

try and work on your relationship then yes, you will have to move

    on.

Either way, by sharing how you really feel about her will give you

the emotional closure to ending this relationship with no regret or

inspire a new beginning for the two of you.

People sometimes, wait a lifetime to find that one special person to

share their life with. If she is the one for you...she will be back! If

not, just know that God has a better plan for you. There could be

someone else out there waiting for you....AND when you find her, it

    will be worth the wait!

I hope it works out for the two of you. Pick up the phone and go for

it! Please let me know what happens.

Sunnys Spotlight continued Here are 10 STEPS to healing from a break up.

STEP #1 - Realize that it is over. No matter how bad it seems you will get over it.

STEP #2 - Recognize what wasnt working for you. We can lose ourselves in a relationship and not even

realize that we really werent happy. Sometimes, what we think is love is really just an emotional attachment to

    someone else.

STEP #3 - Stay busy and talk to your friends. You want people around you who love you and who will help

you feel good about yourself. Surrounding yourself with compassionate, supportive friends and family will help

you see yourself as a worthwhile person.

STEP #4 - Deal with the Hate Phase. Its ok to get anger, you just don't want to stay there! Anger destroys

your soul. Although, it may feel good to replace your feelings of love towards your ex with hate, this can still lead

to complications, and mixed emotions of love and hate are never a good thing.

STEP #5 - Remove memory triggers. Out with the old and in with the new! A break up can signify a new

beginning. Cleaning and organizing your personal space will leave you feeling refreshed and prepared for the

new things to come your way.

STEP #6 - Keep your space. Even if you and your ex have decided to stay friends, break away completely from

each other right after the breakup. This means not seeing each other, not being around his/her family members, no

phone calls, no e-mails, no text messages. This is not necessarily as a permanent measure, but until you feel that

you can converse on a purely platonic level, without an ulterior motive (and yes, wanting to get back together

    counts as an ulterior motive.)

STEP #7 - Find happiness in other areas of your life. Whether that means spending time with your friends and

family, taking up a new hobby, signing up for that class you've always wanted to take, or reading a good book.

    Put your focus somewhere else!

STEP #8 - Stay active. Exercise improves your mood and alleviates depression, and the distraction will help

keep your mind off your situation. Go running outside or just go for a walk, and think of releasing the anger or

sadness with every step you take.

STEP #9 - Cope with the pain appropriately. It's okay to feel like you have messed up - accepting

responsibility for your mistakes or shortcomings is healthy. You must also accept that you are a good person, and

that you did your best and you're not the only one who made mistakes. Of course, a stage of denial is completely

natural, but acceptance is the key to being able to start moving on.

STEP #10 - Feel happy. Express thankfulness, appreciation and gratitude every day. Look for the blessings in

your life. Wear a smile, even if your sad and that will change how you feel inside.

Most of all, dont lose your hope for a better tomorrow. When you lose your hope, you lose everything!

After a bad breakup, it's normal to experience feelings of sadness, loss, and anger. But if you feel yourself falling

into despair, or you can't function, it may be time to speak with a counselor. Speaking to a counselor is not a sign

of weakness, they can give you an objective opinion and some real guidance to get through a difficult time.

You have only one life...so live it to the fullest!

What is a Father? By Sheila Jackson, Guest Contributor

What is a father; according to Miriam Webster it is a man who has begotten a child. Being a father is one of the most rewarding and exciting responsibilities a man could experience. Despite societys reluctance to admit it, fathers undergird everything that is a family. Yet the very foundation of the family is under tremendous stress and trauma. In the last 45 years, the United States has become a world leader in fatherless families. The facts prove that many of the 54 million yearly births will end up fatherless. Overall; more than 75 percent of American children are at risk because of paternal deprivation. Even in two-parent homes, fewer than 25 percent of young boys and girls experience an average of at least one hour a day of relatively individualized contact with their fathers (Henry B. Biller, The Father Factor: What You Need to Know to Make a Difference).

We have gotten this Father concept wrong; its not about what you do; its how you do it. Its the quality and not the quantity of time that is invested in childrens lives. This comes from a Fathers perspective. He goes on to say that the fathers role has been diminished in certain communities more so than others. Its due in part to the fathers role being made almost nonexistent. This is because you have more women in the workplace and challenging the fathers position in the household, children absolutely recognize that.

When asked about his relationship with his

father, he said he had a great relationship with his dad and it was invaluable, though his dad worked second shift the time he spent gave him the knowledge that one cannot gain from a woman or on the street. He bestowed his work ethics and morals on his children. This has greatly impressed his role as a father to his son. He builds upon the values that were passed down from his dad. His main points that he shares with his son are respect of people and of self, work ethic, and the value of a dollar.

Though he is divorced, the parents work collectively to raise their son. This is the only way to rear a healthy being. Sharing ambition and dreams and goals is something moms and dads should employ, it helps boost self esteem. Children with active fathers in their lives tend to do better in school, are less prone to depression, and are more successful in relationships. A father must be the major influence in his childrens life.

    I am reminded of two fathers that I am familiar with;

the first is a single man who has been down on his luck; he lost his job and was refused unemployment. He has lost his car and is barely hanging on to his apartment. He takes his children to/from school every day; he volunteers on field trips and coach on the basketball team. He has taught them how to ride their bikes, skate and even to fish. Homework time is very important in his home. He ensures that his children not only did the work but thoroughly understood it. His emphasis is the quality of time spent opposed to the quantity. Money cannot buy what he can offer his children with love, time and caring.

Secondly, we have a married man who works a 9 to

5 job, his wife is a homemaker, when he walks in the door from work, and it was all about his kids. They began to prepare dinner together. He helps with homework, and has some playtime before he bathes them and puts them to bed. Though this is a two parent home, the mom was the disciplinarian she knew her role and allowed the father to flourish as the decision maker and never challenged his authority.

The views of men have been unanimous; though we

have really good women who do a fantastic job at playing the roles of mom and dad, a woman cannot raise a boy to be a man. They can give them the morals and values of life and teach them the principals of right and wrong but they are not able to teach something they never learned themselves.

Fathers, do not allow society to diminish your role,

whether you are in a traditional family or not, one of the most precious things a father can give to his children is time. We celebrate you Happy Fathers Day! Sheila M. Jackson

On our cover, youll see a photo of Kelvin Elliot and his son. Hes one

of many fathers actively involved in the lives of their children. No

matter what the myths are, the reality is that many of us who are single

dads, (whether we have full or joint custody, visiting rights or still

fighting for rights), love our sons and daughters unconditionally.

Some of us, for whatever reason, may not have the opportunity to see

our children every day, but were there. Were there in their hearts and
