Living on water

15-year-old Cassie Jackson's dad writes for a travel magazine and this means living on a boat currently of the coast of Bali. Cassie Jackson is no different from any other 15 year old she likes music, sun, surf and bikinis; the difference is she lives on a boat. Mike Jackson weekly articles for ‘The Traveler’, which talks about traveling and living abroad. He has also published a book ‘My Working on Water’ and is currently writing ‘A Life on Sea’. Cassie has a younger brother Nat and an older sister Jackie, Nat is currently 10 and is homeschooled with Cassie by their mum Julie, while Jackie is in university, which is, where they originally come from. The Jacksons are all into surfing and all three children have grown up swimming in the ocean since the day they could get in the water and have been surfing since they could walk. Living on a boat means that they go surfing more than once a day. The average timetable for Nat and Cassie is: 5:30- Wake up and go surfing 6:30- Breakfast 7:15- Start school work 10:30- they have a snack and break 11:00- they get back to school work 12:30- Lunch 1:00- More surfing The rest of the day varies but usually includes at least one more sur. When asked if she wanted to pursue a professional a professional career in surfing Cassie answered “I love surfing, but I don’t love competition and I think it might, like take the enjoyment out of it. So I like, want to surf for the rest of my life, but I don’t think Ill ever go pro.” When we asked her mum what she thought Julie

replied saying, “I wouldn’t mind if she to be racing car driver, all I want is for her to be happy. If she wants to go professional that’s fine but if not that’s all good

with me.” We truly respect Cassie's decision and still think she’s an amazing surfer.

Surfing for dummies – What you need When going surfing the first thing you need is obviously a board. When shopping for the perfect board look at a range of different ones before you buy, if possible it is also a good idea to try them out. If you have any questions involving which board would be best for you talk to the storeowner or another more experienced surfing friend. If you are still young and haven’t had much experience soft boards can be a good idea they are also good if the beach where you surf has small waves as they can catch nearly any size of wave. If you are concerned about pricing there is a wide range of cheap second hand boards, which you can find on sites such as Amazon. If you get a hard board and find it slippery surfboard wax can be found in a large range of scents and colours, you can even get ones with glitter. When buying wax make sure you buy one suitable for your climate for example if you live in the tropics make sure you buy one made for the tropics as any others may melt. Surfboard wax can be found at nearly all surfing stores and you can also get special wax for soft boards although they are not so common. When applying the wax rub it on in circles and try to cover they whole upper side of the board focusing on where your feet should go. A leash is important as it stops your board being washed away from you in heavy surf. Leashes are also quite common and come in a range of different colours nearly all leashes go with all boards the only thing to watch out for is if you are getting one second hand make sure it isn’t frayed or near snapping.

The truth about Jaws    Have you seen Jaws? Have you seen any other scary movie based on sharks? Have you ever been chased by a hungry shark? I’m assuming most of you will answer no to the last question. Sharks don’t actually want to eat humans we don’t taste good. Movies like Jaws are completely fiction and don contain any fact at all. Sharks eat fish, turtles and other sea animal, not humans! The only case when are shark may approach you is if they mistake you for a turtle, which doesn’t happen often as we don’t have shells on our backs. In movies sharks come and kill humans for no reason whatsoever and that’s not something sharks do, they only kill sea animals is for food and occasionally humans by mistake! Movies are myths! How many huge monster harks have you seen swimming around waiting for an innocent swimmer or surfer? It’s not common! Movies aren’t true. There made to scare and entertain us, and unless it’s a documentary not to inform you. Movies like Jaws have scared lots of people so much that it’s been years since they went in the sea. These results are depressing, as there really isn’t much danger in the sea. One statistic on death rates in 2009 show that over 200 more people die from falling coconuts then from shark attacks, yet people don’t runaway screaming “It’s a coconut!” when their more likely to die from a coconut then from a shark. Many species of sharks are dying due to some forms of fishing and shark fin fishing and in a few hundred years or even less then that, there may be no sharks. This is good right? No! This will unbalance the whole the whole eco system! So who’s really hurting who? If sharks had death rate charts would we be at the top? We very well could be! We are killing thousands of sharks per week and when fishing for shark fins we just cut the fins of the sharks and leave them to struggle on the seabed till the die! That’s not a nice way to die. We are also killing sharks when they get caught in unsustainable fishing nets. We are hurting far more sharks then human’s sharks hurt. Movies like jaws

don’t show the harm we are doing to sharks, only the harm sharks don’t really do to us. Sharks are rather large and are portrayed as scary creatures but sharks are really magnificent creatures that don’t look to do us any harm. So don’t fear sharks, all the stuff we do to them they should fear us much more.

Interview With Joy Russell

Joy Russell is 18 and has already won Roxy’s grom search and rip curls woman pro. Our interviewer Ian Day interviews her.

Ken: Hey Joy. Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Joy: Yeah sure, I’m 18 and live in Hawaii with my mum, dad and sister Grace who is 8. I am a surfer and have won Roxy’s grom search and Rip curls woman’s pro. I have also come 5th in Nikes world grom championship.

Ken: What hobbies, interests do you have apart from surfing?

Joy: I enjoy sports especially soccer and hockey both of which I play at school but I’m not on the team as have to go away to often. I also play the guitar and piano. I also enjoy reading; my favorite author is Michael Morpurgo especially his book Private Peaceful.

Ken: Don’t you skate as well as surf?

Joy: Yes, I came 3rd in the national Curl skate comp. I enjoy skating almost as much as surfing and it’s a good thing to do when there are no waves.

Ken: How do you feel after wining a competition?

Joy: It feels really good but I also like the feeling of just knowing I’ve done my best but wining just makes me feel like I’m actually quite good at this thing I love.

Ken: Is there any reasons why you surf?

Joy: I surf because it makes me feel happy and I seem to be quite good so why not take this amazing opportunity to surf for a lifetime.

Ken: Do your family surf?

Joy: My dad surfed when he was younger and Grace is learning but Mum has never really tried.

Ken: I heard you recently got a sponsorship with Roxy, how does that feel?

Joy: Awesome! When I was younger I loved Roxy and used to admire the few girls who were sponsored by them. It still seems like a dream that now I’m one of those girls.

Ken: Do you have any plans for you future?

Joy: I want to keep surfing and keep getting better at it. Another dream I have is to travel the world.

Ken: When you travel the world will you take your board?

Joy: Of course I hope to surf at some of the most famous beaches outside of Hawaii. Including breaks from Australia, Europe and Bali.

Ken: Cool. That’s about all we have time for is there anything else you want to say?

Joy: Just keep surfing or doing anything you really enjoy, because that’s how dreams come true.

What a waxy life

A story about board wax

Life on the shelf wasn’t a bad life. It was quite good actually. I had my mates ‘Fruity Twist’s’ George and Max and my life long love ‘Glitter Spread’ Angel. Her glitter was so glittery, her scent apple with a pinch of lime, she would never fall for a pineapple and coconut ‘Tropical Tang’ and if she did it would be of the shelf not into my wrapping.

I loved life on the shelf, I loved sitting on he shelf making fun of the bikinis and borides in the day and hanging out with the other waxes at night. I never thought I would be bought, my mum was but I was young and though I remember every inch of the man thing that bought her it didn’t seem real more like a dream.

It was a Tuesday, ‘The Bach’s’ quietest day I had just woken up to the sound of a customer and was still in a daze. Suddenly the man thing grabbed me and the next thing I know I’m in a bag. I’m wide-awake now and relies theirs someone with me in the bag. Another wax, a ‘Glitter Spread’, Angel! “Angel?” I whisper

“Jon-Jon?” she whispers back.

“Angel I love your scent, your glitters gorgeous” I can’t help it, which knows what will to me when this strange brumming creature we are now in stops. “Jon-Jon?”

“Yes Angel”

“Snap out of it, we could be dying”

“I just had to let you know Angie”

“Well let me know in wax heaven” With that the brumming thing stops and the man thing grabs us and brings us inside “Hey Joey, Lil come see what I got ya” the man thing shouts, from out side the bag we hear thumping on the floor, “What is it Dad” we hear a feminine voice

“Some new wax” The man thing shouts back with that we are taken from the bag and thrown across the room I didn’t see much in air but I landed in a young boy thing’s hand and Angie in the girl thing’s hand. I never saw Angie after that. The boy takes me out side and next thing I know he’s taking of my wrapping! ‘How dare he’ I thought ‘How dare he take all my wrapping of in public!’ what’s worse is he then begins smothering me against a surfboard I choke and soon I find my self being pushed with the board underwater “Hey boy thing look I cant swim” I tried yelling but he didn’t reply. “Hey wax look its ok, see just hold your breath when we go under” I heard a voice but couldn’t figure out where it came from “Who’s there?” I asked

“It’s me the board, just hold your breath when we go under and its quite fun”

“Uh, ok Ill try” and I did and after time it did become fun and it kept becoming more and more fun.

That’s how my life was changed around and I discovered a wax’s favorite thing. Surfing.
