From Friday until Sunday we will have a mini invasion of religious personnel from across the Archdiocese who will be taking part in the ‘Living Joyfully’ events. This has been organised as part of the Year of Consecrated Life which began in Advent. Throughout these three days there will be stalls in the Cathedral with information about the different types of religious orders, with representatives of these different orders of men and women in attendance to talk to people about their life and witness. On Friday there will be large numbers of secondary school children taking part in events from 10am until 4pm, involving workshops, drama, speakers and worship. On Saturday events take place from 1pm and are geared more for young adults and general parishioners. This will run on right up to the time of the Vigil Mass at 6.30pm. Please note that next Saturdays Vigil Mass will be celebrated in the main Cathedral, not in the Crypt, and Archbishop Malcolm will preside at this Mass. On Sunday there will be a chance to look around the stalls before and after the morning celebrations of Mass. The Solemn Mass next week is the Annual Diocesan Mass in support of Marriage and Family Life. Following Mass and evening prayer next Friday evening ‘Aid to the Church in Need’ are holding a Prayer Vigil in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel from 7.30pm until 9pm. The theme of the Vigil is to pray for religious freedom with a particular focus on situations where church communities are persecuted or discriminated against. Archbishop Malcolm will be leading the Vigil with input from the National Director of ACN, Neville Kyrke – Smith. Last week the staff in Cathedral House sneaked in a reference to my birthday in the newsletter without my knowledge. Now that it has passed can I thank people for their good wishes – I’m looking forward to exploring the delights of free bus travel and have already been practising the phrase ‘Am I too early?’ whilst putting on a suitable pleading facial expression. Over the last few weeks the Crypt Halls have been transformed into the equivalent of an exams sweatshop with students in their hundreds sitting written tests both morning and afternoon. Thankfully they ended last week and the Crypt will be open to visitors daily from this week with the 12.15 Mass returning back to the Crypt Chapel as normal. However it won’t be long before the beer starts to arrive in the Crypt Hall so that it can settle and be in the right condition for the Beer Festival beginning on 18 th February. The Cathedral is having its own Social Night in the Crypt on 17 th February, Pancake Tuesday, a chance to enjoy some of the range of beers on offer for the Festival without the crowds and the queuing that is part and parcel of the following days. It is also an opportunity to whet one’s whistle before the rigors of Lent which begins with Ash Wednesday the following day. ST VINCENT’S LOTTERY NUMBERS For week commencing 24 January. Winning numbers are 1, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 9. Prize was £150. There were no winners. Next week the prize money will be £200.

ST NICHOLAS’ SCHOOL It’s been a quieter week in school this week, the first for quite a while. However, there is still plenty to let you all know about. Our Football team were in action midweek, despite the awful weather. All classes wanted to make cards and send their best wishes to Father Tony for his ‘special’ birthday. NSPCC worked in both years 5 and 6 on keeping safe and the pupils found out about the work they do to help children in our city and further afield. Earlier in the week, Year 1 children (and the grown ups!) wrapped up well and went on an adventure to Sefton Park. Next week, our Year 3s and then Year 6s will be spending some time learning about where our food stuffs come from, the journeys they make before they can be bought from the shops. Tesco are hosting ‘Farm to Fork’ workshops for us. The Year 5 class are very excited about going to a Harry Potter workshop and they can’t wait for me to tell you about it next week.

ALTAR SERVERS The Altar Servers in the Cathedral and the Crypt are a dedicated and lively group who loyally serve during our weekend, weekday and special Masses. They encompass all ages, shapes and sizes. Over the years the albs that they wear to serve at the altar have become a little worn and mis-matched. To smarten things up, we are in the process of replacing the Albs with black cassocks and white cottas. Our aim is to be suited, booted and gleaming in time for the Diocesan Chrism Mass on Wednesday April 1st (this is no anticipated April Fool’s joke by the way!). The cost of the transformation is just over £2,200. In addition to cash donations, when the weather improves, we have planned a number of other fund raising events to help us reach our financial goal. You will hear more about these events in our weekly newsletter in due course. If you would like to and can contribute towards the cost, we would be very grateful! Any contributions will be very much appreciated. Any contributions can be placed in an envelope marked ‘Servers’ and can be handed in to any of the clergy or to Cathedral house. With grateful thanks, Julian Daley, Cathedral MC and Fr Ged

STEWARDS We are currently looking for volunteers to join our team of Cathedral Stewards. The main purpose of the role of Steward is

to welcome regular members of our congregation and visitors to our services and Mass at the Cathedral. They assist also by taking the collection, with communion arrangements and giving out service sheets and answering all manner of questions and queries. On bigger occasions they would be invaluable showing people to their seats. No experience is needed as full training would be given. All you need is to be able to give the time – mostly on Sundays but there will be some Sunday afternoon services and weekday services when a presence will be required, as well as all the major Feasts such as Easter and Christmas. You would also need to be warm and welcoming with a big smile; patient and enthusiastic and have a sense of humour. If you think you could give a few hours to this valuable work and become a member of the Cathedral family please contact Claire Hanlon for further details on [email protected] or 709 9222, extension 201. CATHEDRAL GUILD OF GUIDES Please, we need two voluntary guides to work Tuesday at either 10am-1pm or 1pm – 4pm. Full training will be given. The Guild of Guides is a flourishing and energetic team. We welcome thousands of visitors annually to our Cathedral and Crypt. If you have never spoken to large groups but would like to learn, join us! If you are well used to public speaking, join us! If your expertise is with individuals or smaller groups, join us! If your preference is to work solely at the welcome desk,  join  us! All we ask is your weekly commitment to this

distinctive ministry of welcome. Contact: Deacon Paul Mannings: [email protected]

CAR BOOT SALE The date of the next Car Boot Sale to raise funds for the Cathedral will be Saturday 14 February 2014. You can reserve your pitch by ringing 0151 709 9222. Pitches are £10. FUNNY MONEY If you have any old currency, British or foreign, coins or notes languishing in a cupboard or drawer please consider donating them to the Cathedral. You would be surprised at how much we can sell them for to make ‘real’ money for the Cathedral. BEER FESTIVAL PRIVATE PARTY Will take place in the Crypt Concert Room on Tuesday 17 February 2015 from 7.00pm—10.30pm.Tickets are only £9.00 per person and you will receive a 2015 CAMRA Beer Festival glass on arrival.
