While investigating ideas for potential nutritional supplements, 4Life Founder

and CEO David Lisonbee unearthed an obscure reference to a patent for something called transfer factor. Over 40 years earlier, Dr. H. Sherwood Lawrence, a distinguished immunologist at New York University, had determined that an immune response could be transferred from a donor to a recipient through a white blood cell extract. He concluded that the extract must contain a “factor” capable of transferring the donor’s immunity information to the recipient. Consequently, he named the substance transfer factor.

Transfer factors are a class of messenger molecules that transfer important information to immune cells throughout the body. Lisonbee says that transfer factors help immune cells to recognize potential threats, correctly respond to these threats, and remember them the next time they appear.

How do transfer factors work?If you’ve never heard of transfer factors

before, it’s perfectly natural to wonder how they work. 4Life Research Scientist Shane Lefler explains it this way. Nature has perfected a way to protect its young from outside threats. A mother passes on vital immune knowledge (gathered from her own experience) to her newborn in the first critical days of life. Mammals pass on this information through the mother’s first milk—called colostrum—while other animals pass it through the egg yolk. Transfer factors are important components of this immune system education.

David Lisonbee is the Founder and CEO of 4Life. We recently sat down with him to discuss his views on the company’s past and future, what sets it apart from competitors, its field leadership, and much more.

Q: Tell us about the genesis of 4Life. How did you begin and what were the early days like?

a: I have always been interested in health and nutrition, and as such, had been involved in the formulation of dozens of nutritional supplement products. During that time, a lot of research was pointing to the link between the immune system and a variety of conditions, so I really latched onto the notion that immune system function played a bigger role in optimal health than previously thought.

the early days were very exciting. We had a vision of the power of transfer factors and the improvement it could create in the health of people everywhere. at the same time, it certainly wasn’t all roses. Starting a business is a difficult and stressful thing. after weighing our options, we decided to create a network marketing model, and thus, we began talking to everyone about the product, inviting them to meetings to discuss the product and company.

Q: Considering today’s unstable financial climate, what’s the outlook on 4Life’s future?

a: things look terrible out there, don’t they? the good news is that the network marketing industry typically thrives in a down economy. and we have reason to be very optimistic at 4Life. Despite all the economic jitters, 2010—which was very much in the thick of recession—was our best year yet.

Q: How important are 4Life’s field leaders?

a: one thing that sets us apart is that our field leaders are true, homegrown leaders. Many companies recruit and pay heavily for lead or master distributors. We didn’t do this. We only wanted people who were sincerely attracted to the product and company. as a result, our leaders are authentic 4Life team members, not hired hands, so to speak.

Q: What else sets 4Life apart from the industry?

a: our products, of course, are probably the primary factor that distinguishes us from the competition. also, our compensation plan is one of the most generous

plans in the industry. and, our customer service pushes us to a new level.

there’s one other thing that makes us different—and that’s our passion for being the best. I think that the leaders of many companies who have become successful sort of forget what got them there. they’ve lost the drive, the passion to continue doing what got them there. they’ve lost desire to be a caring and conscientious leader. and that’s unfortunate.

Q: Service is one of the pillars upon which the company is built. Why is that?

a: Well, it stems from the initial desire to take 4Life transfer Factor® to the world. We knew that making a transfer factor product available could bring about significant benefits for people by supporting their immune systems. Naturally, that provided a lot of motivation.

But as we began to grow the company, we knew we had an obligation to reach out to individuals and communities around us and contribute as good neighbors. So, we’ve tried to give back, so to speak, throughout our history.

Q: So, after more than a decade, has it all been worth it?

a: absolutely. I remember a couple years ago, we traveled to the Dominican republic for meetings. a few of us went to visit a woman who had signed up as a distributor. We entered her humble home—it was dark inside with a rough cement floor and tattered cloth covering holes in the walls for windows. But as this woman began to speak of the benefits she and her family had seen both from using our products and from being able to start her own business, the gratitude and warmth she radiated were evident as she cried and told us that her life was changing for the better. this experience—and others like it—have humbled me and made me want to try even harder to make what we offer the best it can be.
