Space Regainers/Maintainers

Band and Loop Space MaintainerThe band and loop space maintainer will prevent any movement of surrounding teeth while maintaining space for the erupted tooth.

HOW IT IS USED: A wire loop is soldered to a first molar band. The front section abuts a deciduous molar.

Jack Screw Space RegainerThe Jack Screw Space Regainer exerts force on adja-cent teeth by activation of a segment of the open coil with compression lugs.

Active Loop Space RegainerThe active space regainer utilizes a finger spring that is activated by a simple adjustment of the loop.

Habit Appliances

Tongue CribThe tongue crib appliance inhibits the tongue access to the anterior dentition and surrounding tissue.

HOW IT IS USED: A .040” support arch wire is first soldered to bands on the first molars. Depending on treatment objectives, a crib or rake configuration is bent and soldered to the main support wire.

Thumb CribThe thumb crib is closely adapted to the rugae area of the palate to discourage thumb or finger sucking.

HOW IT IS USED: An anterior “Hay Rake” is soldered to the lingual wire to discourage the sucking habit. The ends of the wire may be closed or left exposed to “remind” the patient to discontinue the habit.

Blue GrassThe blue grass is another thumb sucking habit de-vice. It is used in patients with mixed or permanent dentition. Patients are told to turn the Reflon roller as a substitute habit.

HOW IT IS USED: The palatal lingual wire holding the roller is soldered to bands on the first molars.

Expansion/Arch Development

Hilgers PendexThe hilgers pendex is formatted to produce ortho-pedic expansion of the maxilla. It also rotates and distalizes maxillary first molars without much coop-eration from the patient.

Haas Palatal Expander The Haas appliance is both tissue and tooth borne and has an extensive amount of palatal acrylic, which acts on the palatal mucosa.

Quad HelixThe Quad Helix is used to correct unilateral or bilat-eral cross bites, expand posterior segments, and align crowded teeth. It can be activated intra-orally or extra-orally depending on design.

HOW IT IS USED: The Quad Helix is soldered to first molar bands with the lateral arms contoured to the bicuspids and cuspids.

Expansion “W”The Expansion “W” is a simple version of the Quad Helix expansion device and can be used on either the maxillary or mandibular arch.

TransverseThe transverse appliance is recommended when there is an arch width deficiency in the maxilla.

Upper SchwarzThis appliance is used for bilateral cross bites and to help eliminate anterior crowding.

HOW IT IS USED: This appliance incorporates two mid-palatal expansion screws for maximum stability: the front screw in the cuspid area and the back screw in line with the first molars. Adams Clasps are typically used on the first molars and Arrow or Ball Clasps between the first and second bicuspids.

Lower SchwartzThe Lower Schwarz serves the same purpose as the above Upper Schwarz but is fabricated to fit the mandibular arch.

HOW IT IS USED: This appliance uses a single expan-sion screw imbedded in the lingual acrylic. If the patient has first molars, Adams Clasps will be used.

Fixed TranverseThe fixed Transverse appliance is an alternative to a removable Schwarz plate. It is used in cases where poor retention is present or patient cooperation is questionable.

Bilateral Distal JetUnilateral Distal JetThe Distal Jet is a fixed lingual appliance that can produce unilateral or bilateral molar distalization and rotation correctness. It can also be converted to a Nance holding arch without removing the appli-ance.

Lower Fixed SagittalThe Fixed Sagittal appliance serves as an alternative to a removable sagittal in cases that retention is dif-ficult or patient compliance is an issue.

HOW IT IS USED: This appliance places an expansion screw on each side of the arch in the cuspid/first bicuspid area.

Hilgers PendulumThe Hilgers Pendulum appliance produces a molar distalizing effect in the maxilla in the range of ap-proximately 5mm.

HOW IT IS USED: This appliance applies pressure to the molars using springs. The pendulum is anchored to the upper teeth using wire rests bonded to the oc-clusal surfaces of the bicuspids.

Holding Appliances

Fixed Transpalatal ArchThe Fixed Transpalatal Arch is excellent at main-taining acquired expansion. It can be designed with a solid transpalatal bar or with an omega loop allow-ing for adjustment and producing molar rotation. This appliance is also available in a removable ver-sion.

HOW IT USED: Formed with a .036” wire with a cen-ter loop. It is then soldered to the molar bands. The palatal wire must be relieved from the tissue for patient comfort.

Lingual Arch with Loops Lingual arches are available in various lengths. They can either be ideally shaped or closely contoured to arch configuration and may also include loops for adjustment. It is also available removable from bands.

HOW IT IS USED: A section of .36” wire is contoured to the lingual surfaces of the teeth and soldered to bands on the first molars. Spurs may be soldered to the distal of the laterals to prevent loss of space in the arch while waiting for eruption of posterior teeth. Adjustment loops are used in the bicuspid area for activation.

NanceThe Nance appliance is available straight or with re-curved arms, removable or soldered to bands. The Nance is effective in preventing mesial molar drift.

HOW IT IS USED: A stabilizing wire traverses the pal-ate extending forward to the first bicuspid area. The wire is soldered to bands on the first molars, with an acrylic button processed over the wire in the front of the palatal vault.

Finishing/Retention Appliances

QCM ApplianceThe QCM is equipped with an inconspicuous, clear labial bow. The labial bow may be refitted by heat-ing the surface.

RetainerThis retainer is shown with Ricketts and Labial Bow with Loops. Retainers come in a variety of design options, colors and patterns.

Retainer This retainer is shown with the Labial Bow soldered to “C” clamps. Retainers come in a variety of design options, colors and patterns.

Invisible RetainerThe Invisible Retainer was designed with the ap-pearance conscious patient in mind. It can be used to align a maximum of two teeth per arch with 1mm of movement per tooth.

Essix™ RetainerThe Essix™ Invisible Retainer is a smaller, cuspid-to-cuspid version of the full arch appliance. Only minimal movement is guaranteed with this retainer.

Bonded RetainerBonded Retainers are inconspicuous and hygienic. Two or more bonds can be used depending on the individual preference.

Krause RetainerThe Krause Retainer is used to stabilize excessively mobile anterior and lower anterior teeth. It is con-structed from bondable mesh pads connected to wire spines.

Bleaching TrayA bleaching tray is similar to a mouth guard in con-struction. It is constructed with space between the tooth surface and tray in order to hold bleach while in use.
