Precision Drummers, Squid was founded in fall 2000 by an award-winninggroup of snare drummers from the Dartmouth Pipe Band Association. Theyhad been exclusively selected for a musical tribute entitled DRUM! whichwas to be debuted at the Input 2000 media conference in Halifax. With the realization that precision drumming was something that heldmass appeal, 7 of the drummers decided to form their own drum-corps. Thefirst official performance for the newly conceived Precision Drummers,Squid was on the 25th of November 2000, at the Halifax Drumfest. Word ofSquid’s unique precision drumming quickly spread and internationalperformances soon followed.

14 PARADISO BEYOND THE MAINSTREAM

The central figure, Jennifer, is the mother ofthe child with autism. A second actor plays thevarious other characters that interact with her, including her son Nicholas and husband David. The structure of the play is an episodic journeyover the course of 10 years, from confusion priorto a life-altering diagnosis, through stages ofdenial, anger, depression, bargaining and finallyacceptance. Along the way are flights of fancyand a great deal of humour, found both inJennifer’s own approach to the challenge, and inNic’s perception of the world around him.

The title of the play is a reflection of the literalmindedness of many autists. Nic is fascinatedwith God and seeks answers to the simplest ofquestions one might ask about any ‘real person’.

Jennifer and David humourously provide a lastname for God: “Almighty”, but they fail to pro-vide a simple answer to the question of God’smiddle name. Through the course of the playvariations on the possibilities for God’s middlename creep into the action. At times it is‘patience’, at others it is ‘punishment’, sometimes‘love’. By the end of the play, no one is in anydoubt as to the ineffable quality that constitutes

God’s middle name. The image of the game show Jeopardy, as it

appears projected at the top of the play and inmarketing materials, reflects Nicholas’overriding fascination with game shows. Thisfascination is again not unique to Nicholas; thepredictable scripting of these shows, thecolourful elements, the combinations of numbersand letters make game shows a strong draw formany autists. In many ways Nicholas filters all ofhis life experiences through a game show format.

The play is comprised of nineteen scenes; somenaturalistic, some direct audience address; there isa parody of detective fiction and a dancemarathon, a meditation on heredity and genes, and five times in the play, Jennifer visits ‘God’soffice’ – the rocks at Peggy’s Cove. Here she battleshungry seagulls as she mourns the loss of thedream life she expected, and embraces the morerewarding reality of raising her special child.

Written with sensitivity and lightness of touch, the play does not flinch from describing the griefinvolved in parenting an autistic child, yet theoverall sense is one of joy in Nicholas’accomplishments.

At a point in her career where it’s best forher to call her own shots in terms of settlingon the pulse and tone of a recording,Wright’s approach to her latest record,Everything And More, had a lot to do withinstinct.

“There were times on past recordingswhere a label wouldn’t let me record certaintunes and they went on to be nominated forGrammy awards. Now as an independentartist I’ve got more say in the whole process.Plus my longtime manager Brian Ferrimanreminded me that none of us have a crystalball. He kept saying that if nothing else, Ihad to have a good time making this CD”.

It was good advice, Michelle went back tousing producers Russ Zavitson and TonyHaseldon and found Tony and Russ wereadamant about this being “Michelle’srecord” and they wanted her to work withsongs that represented experiences she bestrelated to.

Those variables in the equation helpedproduce an album that Wright is very proudof and longtime fans will take note of thefact that she continues to evolve and grow asa singer and artist. “I believe we really foundthe soul of these songs. Tony and Russ really

encouraged me when it came toexperimenting with phrasing, dynamics, things like that,” adds the Tennesseeresident.

Today, Wright is at a stage in her careerwhere there is much to look forward to andmuch to reflect upon, grateful for thesuccesses she’s enjoyed and the lessonslearned. “We all have a lot of talentedfriends whose dreams have not beenfulfilled. It’s just the way it goes sometimes. But, for me, the ride so far has beenawesome. My career has taken me to everycontinent except Antarctica, and I’ve justhad so much fun.”

And the adventure and fun are anythingbut over as Wright gets set to introduce fansto the new tunes on Everything And Morealongside her catalog of hits.

“Am I ready to be on the road? You bet,”smiles Wright as she prepares to addanother chapter to what has thus far beenone of the most successful stories inCanadian country music history.

Everything And More is now available toevery computer-friendly soul around theworld at Michelle’s website store and at allthe usual digital download sites as well.

20 PIONEER FAMILY POOLS CLASSIC ALBUMS LIVE

Imagine that Mick Jagger or Bono or Axl Rose orEddie Vedder died and their respective bands decided tofind a replacement and make another album. What arethe chances that they would make not only the best-selling album of their careers, but also the best? That'sthe trick AC/DC accomplished with Back in Black.Released in August 1980, only half a year after singerBon Scott fatally choked on his own vomit, hard rock’ssecond-best-selling album of all time (after LedZeppelin's fourth) is both fitting tribute and raucouswake. Like much of Def Leppard’s back catalog, Back inBlack was produced by Robert “Mutt” Lange. But unlikeDef Leppard’s quintessential eighties products Pyromaniaand Hysteria, the Australian quintet’s follow-up to its1979 breakthrough Highway to Hell still soundsthoroughly timeless, the essence of unrepentantlysimple but savagely crafted hard rock.

From the vengeful death knell of Hell’s Bells to thestrutting finale of Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution, therhythms on this album do not relent. Neither does thescreeching of Scott's successor, Brian Johnson. Nearlyeverything is beat and scream, explosion and release.Unleashed while New Wave was reasserting rock asdance music, this monument of clean rock sonics anddirty impulses makes a strong case for headbanging, buta better argument for a full-body party.

Brothers Malcolm and Angus Young play their guitars

in such close tandem that they seem synced by the samechurning organism. As chords bang and pummel, bassistCliff Williams and drummer Phil Rudd drag and push thebeat with such steady fluctuations that the result is onecontinuous, well-oiled throttle. As titles such as YouShook Me All Night Long proclaim, Back in Black is acelebration of thrashing, driving all night long type ofpartying and sex. Johnson misinterprets Scott’s sass ascontempt, just as gangsta rap would turn thug love intosomething ugly. If Back in Black someday does sounddated, let it be for this sole mistake.

BARRY WALTERS Rolling Stone, 2002

Craig Martin is the producer/wearer of many hatsbehind the Classic Albums Live series. Each concertfaithfully recreates an album note for note. Think Beatlesand Stones for Classic and Nirvana and Radiohead forModern Classic.

“It’s not a tribute band” Mr. Martin says. “It’s a recital.Like listening to Mozart by the Toronto SymphonyOrchestra.” Craig hires specific musicians for each show, sometimes up to twenty. He even hired a children’s choirfor Pink Floyd’s The Wall.Mr. Martin says he’s only asmuch of a perfectionist as his audiences. “People arepurists. They’re waiting to hear that certain note orsqueal”. Classic Albums Live and Modern Classics Liveare the ultimate for music lovers!

WINTER DANCE PARTYTOUR of 1959

The Legendary Music ofBuddy Holly, Ritchie Valens & The Big Bopper

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 12th at 8:00pm

John Mueller was raised on the electrifyingmusic of Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, LittleRichard and of course, Buddy Holly. Playingalong to that great old rock and roll with hisSears and Roebuck drum set and DutchMasters cigar box guitar, a young JohnMueller unknowingly began a career thatwould take him throughout the United States, playing his music and acting for the stage, film and television.

John has annually head-lined his critically acclaimedWinter Dance Party® showfor many years now. Since1999, this tribute concert hasre-created the original tourof 1959 that was tragically tobe the last ever for BuddyHolly, Ritchie Valens and theBig Bopper. Highlights of thetour over the years haveincluded John being award-ed the Key to the City ofGreen Bay, Wisconsin andperforming at the SurfBallroom in Clear Lake Iowa, where Buddy Holly, RitchieValens and The Big Bopper gave their last per-formance before their tragic plane crash onFebruary 3, 1959. Other notable performanc-es include the Jerry Lewis Telethon and theRock and Roll Hall of Fame. John’s WinterDance Party concert was filmed live and isnow available on DVD.

Ray Anthony is one of the most charismat-ic and engaging performers seen in a long

time – and he definitely knows how to makean instant connection with his audience!

It’s obvious when you witness how Ray cancaptivate an audience with high energy anddance groove. Add on that he can get a wholeaudience singing the words to Oh Donna,That’s My Little Susie and Come On, Let’s Go,the icing on the cake will happen when Raywill have you up on your feet smiling, clap-

ping, and dancing during arousing rendition of LaBamba.

And speaking of familymembers! The third per-former on the bill is Jay P.Richardson, paying tributeto his father, the Big Bopper.Yes, Jay is the actual son ofthe original Big Bopper, and,on stage, goes by the name“Big Bopper Jr.” Jay, whowas born 84 days after hisfather died in the planecrash, is an extremely like-able “cuddly teddy bear” of aman who instantly endearshimself to the audience. Jay

previously owned a nightclub called “TheLittle Bopper,” and used to book rock and rollacts but, with his family resemblance and hissimilar singing style, he was eventually con-vinced to perform his own tribute to hisfather. Since then he has performed with anumber of rock and roll singers, includingBobby Vee, Freddy Cannon, the Crickets, andthe Drifters.

DAN COOPER CONCERTS 25

There is intelligence and sophistication to Holly Cole’s singing that sets her apart. She canimbue well-worn standards and eclectic songs with an uncanny combination of sensuality, innocence, originality and sheer musicality. Cole takes tunes everybody thinks they know anddiscovers new undercurrents in the venerable anthems of contemporary composers, wrapping herhonesty, compassion and sardonic wit around their sometimes-fragile creations. The results aresexy, provocative, spellbinding, sometimes dangerous and never, ever dull.

“I look at the essence of a song,” muses Holly Cole. “If it’s a great lyric I often love to slow itdown, explore it, dissect it and deconstruct it. I love to take it apart and then put it back togetherand look at it in an entirely different way. In the process, it often becomes more evocative. That’sa huge part of my art form, that’s a huge part of what I do.”

Another thing that has become a large part of what she does is Christmas. Like mistletoe andbrightly wrapped presents, her Christmas tour is a highlight of her year. She has two Christmasrecordings. Her first, the EP Christmas Blues and the full recording Baby its Cold Outside.

Beginning with her self-produced Christmas Blues EP in 1989, Cole has charted a career that hasincluded seven albums, six of them gold and platinum, a couple of anthologies, theaforementioned EP, a gold album in Japan for her 1993 album Blame It On My Youth, severaltelevision specials and some of the finest vocal work in the world of contemporary pop.

Born and raised in the Maritimes, Cole grew up surrounded by music; her parents are classicalplayers, her brother is a composer and jazz artist, her uncle sang and acted on Broadway

and her grandfather played C&W accordion. In her youth she listened to everythingfrom Broadway Musicals, Country and Western and Classical to sixties rock

and the pop of her generation. In her mid-teens she discovered NinaSimone, Sonny Rollins and Betty Carter and for a long time listenedexclusively to jazz. “Jazz is a big influence on my sound but ultimatelyit’s a fusion of many styles”. Holly’s latest project, her self titled 8threcording was released in late February, 2008 in Canada. The

recording is co-produced by Greg Cohen and includes a collectionof standards like Charade, Reaching For The Moon, I Will Wait

For You and her first self-composed song entitled Larger ThanLife. The recording was arranged by Gil Goldstein and was

recorded almost entirely in New York City using a nonetof New York’s finest musicians.

32 DAN COOPER CONCERTS

Legend is not a title John McDermott would readily embrace, but hisaccomplishments have become legendary in recording industry lore. Hecalls Toronto and Boston home, but he has also found a home as aninternational recording star and household name – known as much for hissuccessful musical career as for his commitment to veterans’ causes.

“I grew up singing, but I thought everybody grew up singing. My dad andmom introduced us to music early on, and all of the McDermott kids couldunleash a verse or two of Scotland The Brave or Green Isle of Erin oncommand. My song was Danny Boy, and I sang it with pride, because evenas a kid I knew what a powerful and emotive song it was...”

The ninth of twelve children from a traditional Glasgow Irish family whoemigrated from Scotland to Canada in the 1960s, John’s musical roots areequal parts Scottish and Irish. His songs showcase his innate understandingand facility with traditional folk melodies as well as more contemporarystylings. He is a new generation of musical storyteller in the great Celtictradition – somehow combining the majesty of legendary Irish tenor JohnMcCormack, the lyrical sense of Robbie Burns, the charm of Dean Martin, and the everyman quality of Pete Seeger. Underneath it all is the drivingdesire to chronicle the many facets of universal human experience.

34 DAN COOPER CONCERTS

“ANGELS IN THE SNOW” SUNDAY, DECEMBER 21st at 7:30pm

Born in Regina, Saskatchewan and Toronto-raised, Mr. Burgess was educated at a privateCatholic school and sung liturgy and Gregorianchants as a choir member there. Michael credits theinterior quality of that kind of music coupled withhis extensive stage experience where songs are aform of extended speech that enable him to inter-pret each selection into something that touches thelistener. He feels strongly about music and emotionsbeing inextricably linked. In his rare instances ofrelaxation, Mr. Burgess chooses to listen to musicthat reflects his feelings of the moment. And thatcould be anything from any musical category, including country or rock.

But his defining role in musical theatre will alwaysbe Jean Valjean in an all-Canadian production of theCameron Mackintosh/Ed and David Mirvish “LesMiserables”. He garnered such praise and outstand-ing reviews that he remained as Valjean for morethan 1,000 performances. Now established as anactor who can “go the distance” by winning criticalapproval and pulling in audiences night after night!
