A Walk On Part

Tuesday 25 October to Saturday 12 November A Live Theatre & Soho Theatre co-production In association with New Writing North A Walk On Part The Fall of New LabourFrom the diaries of Chris Mullin Adapted for the stage by Michael Chaplin Directed by Max Roberts

Take a ringside seat and enjoy an insider’s view of the last and most turbulent decade in politics as the critically acclaimed and witty diaries of former MP for Sunderland South, Chris Mullin, return to the stage.

Chris served Sunderland South as its MP for 23 years, retiring last year after serving as a Minister in three Government departments, including the Foreign Office, as well as a distinguished and influential back-bencher. Shortly after leaving Parliament, he published the second volume of his diaries to universal acclaim, many critics suggesting that they offer the clearest insight into the Blair and Brown years.

Live Theatre and Soho Theatre bring Mullin’s witty, irreverent take on contemporary politics to the stage, reflecting three worlds during a time of crisis and change – the febrile political village of Westminster, the flash points of Africa he toured as a Minister and the fragile community he served as an MP.

Don’t miss this hit show, which is back by popular demand, before it transfers to Soho Theatre in London for a four week run.

“Every once in a while, political diaries emerge that are so irreverent and so insightful that they are destined to be handed out as leaving presents across Whitehall for years to come.” David Cameron

Tuesday 13 to Thursday 15 September, 7.30pm Jonathan Likes ThisBy Lee Mattinson Directed by Paul James Design by Andrew Wood

Heather Fudge “Alright, everyone. Don’t freak but my mam’s asked me to put a message out to say our Jonathan’s dead...”

When sixteen year old Jonathan Fudge dies, his friends flock to his Facebook page to make sense of the horrible mess. But when Jonathan starts to respond, they begin to wonder whether their friend has disappeared at all.

Because his Facebook comments quickly escalate to blank texts and phone calls, the hope that should glue his friends together begins to rip them apart and the Christmas prom sees the one electrifying event that Jonathan has confirmed he will attend.

Following its success in April 2011 Live Theatre is delighted to welcome back the talented cast of youth theatre members as they perform Lee Mattinson’s hilarious new play.

To find out more about Jonathan Fudge and his life before his tragic disappearance why not become friends with him on Facebook www.facebook.com/jonathanfudge94

“I’m delighted that we have been able to bring back Jonathan Likes This. I thought it was an outstanding piece of work – beautifully written, performed and presented and I was keen to bring it back into our repertoire so a wider audience might be able to enjoy it and have a chance to see the fantastic work our education team creates with young people.” Max Roberts, Artistic Director

Thursday 22 September, 7.30pm That’s Me on the Left, in the ParkaBy Bob Karper

Normal can be extraordinary. Look in detail at an everyday life and you can find art. There is beauty and inspiration right under the couch. Herald Angel award-winning performer Bob Karper has taken stories from the lives of his friends, his American family and strangers he’s met, and mixed them with film, slides and live original music, played on a self-built piano. Parka is a warm, funny, moving show about self-consciousness and the nature of love that makes audience members think, feel and leave delighted.

“Karper’s show feels like a late-night chat with a stranger in a bar. He is a wistful yet unsentimental storyteller with a beguiling and idiosyncratic style… An engagingly intimate portrait of relationships that makes love seem a more complicated business than ever.” The Guardian

Northern Stage and Live Theatre present Close the Coalhouse DoorBy Alan Plater Based on stories by Sid Chaplin Music by Alex Glasgow Directed by Samuel West

Close the Coalhouse Door is a musical play based on the stories of Sid Chaplin with songs by Alex Glasgow.

Max Roberts, Artistic Director at Live Theatre, who directed the 1994 production of Close the Coalhouse Door, talks about an exciting new partnership with Northern Stage:

“Alan Plater, who sadly died last year, was one of the finest dramatic writers of his generation. He was also one of the North East’s most fondly remembered sons. He wrote 12 plays for Live Theatre and I had the privilege and honour of directing 10 of them.

His loss to audiences in the north east is immense and many people have asked me how we might honour his memory by way of some kind of valedictory event.

So I am delighted that, in collaboration with Northern Stage and director Samuel West, we are able to present a memorial production of, many would argue, his seminal piece.”
