makola.bc.ca Employment Opportunity Live-in Resident Caretaker Position Sooke, BC Under the direct supervision of the South Island Regional Property Manager, the Resident Caretaker is responsible for the daily upkeep, minor maintenance, and tenant relations for a 25-unit Apartment Building for 19 years plus. The incumbent must be aware and sensitive to the housing needs of the Aboriginal/Non-Aboriginal people. The Resident Caretaker represents the M’akola Group of Societies and embraces the vision to improve living conditions for Aboriginal people while encouraging and reinforcing traditional practices and cultural beliefs. The incumbent will ensure the Society is represented in a professional, responsible, and respectful way at all times. The Resident Caretaker position is responsible for all semi-skilled maintenance duties, interior and exterior of units. Minor electrical, appliance, plumbing and carpentry maintenance and emergency repair, with the ability to identify where and when a contractor is required. As well as janitorial, building security and tenant relations, this includes showing units. To be successful in this position you must have a combination of related education and experience in building maintenance and/or as a Resident Caretaker. Ability to work cooperatively with tenants, staff, and contractors. Performs work in a way that complies with safety procedures/practices when dealing with hazards. Completes work orders in a timely manner, along with corresponding paperwork. Must have the ability to follow direction, be diligent in completing tasks, maintaining equipment and keeping building clean. You have proven negotiating skills and have experience working with diverse populations. Having experience working in Aboriginal communities/agencies is a plus. Our ideal candidate is a culturally sensitive individual, who has working knowledge of applied trades and maintenance duties. Works in a professional manner and takes pride in ensuring the building is presentable at all times. You are courteous and polite with all community members/tenants and colleagues. You have proven methods for strong planning and time management, as well as being an active team member. You exhibit strong interpersonal skills, display tact, respect and diplomacy while relaying information in a calm, polite, respectful and accurate manner. Ideal for semi-retired person, however all applications accepted; Accommodation is provided at reduced rent; Must possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s License, Clean Driver’s Abstract; Clear Criminal Record Check required upon selection; Must participate in rotating on-call schedule for evenings/weekends for emergencies; Current First Aid Level 1 an asset; Preference will be given to applicants of Aboriginal ancestry as per Section 41 of the BC Human Rights Code (self-identify).
