High school vs. College

• High School: You are entitled to support and services.

• Entitled: legal right or a just claim to receive or do

something.

• College: You are eligible for support and services if you

ask for them.

• Eligible: Having the right to obtain something if you

satisfy certain conditions.


Important Reminders

• There are no IEPs in college

• Students are responsible for:

• Providing documentation of and disclosing their

disability to be eligible for accommodations

• Regularly advocating for their needs throughout the

term

• This level of advocacy will extend beyond the classroom

and into the student’s home and community.

IDEA (Entitlement) ADA and Section 504 (Eligibility)

Covers students in K-12 Covers students in post-secondary institutions

Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment guaranteed to student

Equal access is granted to student who must be “otherwise qualified” to enter college without consideration of disability
