June is Seniors Month in Ontario Theme: Living Your Best Life
Did you know? There are 900 million persons in the world over the
age of 60 and in Canada, there are more person over the age of 65 than children under the age of 15.
Life expectancy has increased by 30 years over the past 100 years.
Our potential for spiritual growth increases as we age.
A new ministry is emerging in churches to support the faith development of “maturing adults”
throughout the multiple transitions that mark the second half of life.
The maturing adult (50+) population is comprised of three distinct groups: the pre-retired, the active retired and the elders – each group having specific needs.
Dealing with issues of loss is the central psychological and spiritual task of maturing years.
Connection – with self, others, creation and God - is our greatest asset in the aging process.
How might we support each other in the aging process? How might our parish initiate and develop Ministry with Maturing Adults?
THE MASS
THE MASS Jesus offers himself in the Mass
After our Lord returned to heaven, the Apostles continued to offer the Eucharistic Sacrifice. They ordained other priests. In this way, Jesus gave us the priesthood and the Mass.
In the Mass, Jesus gives Himself to His Heavenly Father, as He did on the Cross, but now in an unbloodymanner in the Sacrament of the Eucharist, for He cannot suffer anymore. The Sacrifice of the Mass is the same Sacrifice that Jesus offered on the Cross. In every Mass, Christ is present, acting through His priest, under the appearances of bread and wine.In every Mass, His Death becomes present, offered as our sacrifice to God in an unbloody and sacramental manner. As often as the Sacrifice of the Cross is celebrated on an altar, the work of our redemption is carried on.
At Mass, we offer Christ, our Passover Sacrifice, to God, and we offer ourselves along with Him. We then receive the risen Lord, our Bread of Life, in Holy Communion.
Our greatest gift to God
The Mass is a true sacrifice because in it, Jesus continues His Sacrifice of the Cross, and He gives us the graces He won for us when He died for our salvation.
There is nothing that we can give God as a gift that is greater than His own Son. We offer Jesus to His heavenly Father in the Mass as our Greatest Gift to God.
We join with Jesus and priest in offering to God this highest form of worship:
1. To give God the highest adoration and glory.2. To thank Him for all His blessings.3. To make up for all our sins.4. To obtain all the blessing we need.
In the Mass, it is Jesus Christ, the God-Man, Who is our High Priest and our Victim, praying for us to His heavenly Father.
SHARELIFE Working wonders for those who need help in our
neighbourhood…Working with St. Elizabeth HealthCare, ShareLife, through Catholic Charities, has implemented a shared services initiative that has provided support to agencies in the areas of human resources (16 agencies) and financial services (5 agencies). Now in its fourth year of activity, agencies participating in this initiative report that they are able to improve the quality, competency and accuracy of their work in these areas. Some Executive Directors reported on the impact of this initiative to their agency. “It has enhanced our agency’s competence.”shares one Executive Director, “Before, I was in way over my head, but trying to do my best. Now, I have expertise at my disposal and feel comfortable.”

PENTECOST SUNDAY ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________
PENTECOST SUNDAYJUNE 4, 2017
RReflection The Season of Easter concludes with today’s celebration,
the Feast of Pentecost. On Pentecost, we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles gathered in the upper room in Jerusalem; this event marks the beginning of the Church. Today’s Gospel recounts how Jesus gave the gift of the Holy Spirit to His disciples. After His death, Jesus fulfilled His promise to send to Hisdisciples a helper, an advocate, who would enable them to be His witnesses throughout the world.
The Feast of Pentecost reminds us about the integral connection between the gifts of peace and forgiveness and the action of the Holy Spirit. Jesus greets His disciples with the gift of peace. Jesus then commissions Hisdisciples to continue the work that He has begun, “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” He breathes the Holy Spirit upon the disciples and sends them to continue Hiswork of reconciliation through the forgiveness of sins. Jesus’ act of breathing the Holy Spirit mirrors God’s act of
breathing life into Adam at the time of Creation. In fact, both the Greek and Hebrew words for “spirit” can also be translated as “breath”.
This Gospel reminds us that the Church is called to be a reconciling presence in the world. The reconciling presence of Christ is celebrated in the Church’s
sacramental life. In the Sacrament of Baptism, we are cleansed of sin and become a new creation in Christ. In the Sacrament of Penance, the Church celebrates the mercy of God through the forgiving of sins. This reconciling presence is also to be a way of life for Christians. In situations of conflict, we are to be agents of peace and harmony among people.
