THE STORY OF

THE NATIVITY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY Feast Day: September 8th

The Church has celebrated Mary’s birth since at least the

sixth century. A September birth was chosen because the Eastern Church begins its Church year with September. The September 8 date helped determine the date for the feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8.

Scripture does not give an account of Mary’s birth. However, the apocryphal Protoevangelium of James fills in the gap. This work has no historical value, but it does reflect the development of Christian piety. According to this account, Anna and Joachim are infertile but pray for a child. They receive the promise of a child who will advance God’s

plan of salvation for the world. Such a story, like many biblical counterparts, stresses the special presence of God in Mary’s life from the beginning.

Saint Augustine connects Mary’s birth with Jesus’ saving work. He tells the earth to rejoice and shine forth in the light of her birth. “She is the flower of the field from whom

bloomed the precious lily of the valley. Through her birth the nature inherited from our first parents is changed.” The

opening prayer at Mass speaks of the birth of Mary’s Son as

the dawn of our salvation, and asks for an increase of peace.Reflection We can see every human birth as a call for new hope in the world. The love of two human beings has joined with God in his creative work. The loving parents have shown hope in a world filled with travail. The new child has the potential to be a channel of God’s love and peace to the world.

This is all true in a magnificent way in Mary. If Jesus is the perfect expression of God’s love, Mary is the foreshadowing

of that love. If Jesus has brought the fullness of salvation, Mary is its dawning.

Birthday celebrations bring happiness to the celebrant as well as to family and friends. Next to the birth of Jesus, Mary’s birth offers the greatest possible happiness to theworld. Each time we celebrate her birth, we can confidently hope for an increase of peace in our hearts and in the world at large. SING ALLELUIA!

The 11 am Adult choir is currently looking for more singers. If you love to sing and can hold a tune, we have a spot for you. Your commitment will be to attend a weeknight practice once a month (night to be determined) and stay after Mass once a month for an hour to practise. We will teach you some basic music skills and harmonies. Also if you play an instrument, please feel free to contact us. Anyone interested joining the music ministry should contact the office or Alice Warford at 416-265-4272.

We are currently seeking volunteers in all of the ministries of the parish.

We realize time is a very important commodity. It seems like we never have enough of it. When a loved one passes away we often say, I wish we could have spent more time with them or their time here was cut too short.

Yes indeed time is truly a precious gift from God, but how well do we use it. It is so easy to put things off and say well maybe at a later time, when the kids are finished school or maybe when my education is finished and I have found a job.

But time waits for no one. An opportunity missed. A chance to serve the Lord well!

Volunteering your time in the parish is a very good way to share your time and your talents. You really have a vested interest in the life of your parish community. Could you imagine a parish with no ushers to greet you when you arrived or no lectors to proclaim the word of God? We need to ask ourselves as members of a Parish Family, how are we going to choose to share our time, whether for leisure, work, service or prayer. How is God Calling you to use your time in our parish community?

Your commitment may be just 1 ½ hours a month to be a lector or an usher at the Sunday Mass you were already going to attend. Maybe you are looking for a challenge and want to be on the Parish council to help shape the direction your Parish takes. Maybe you want to be a part of the Children’s

Liturgy or help with preparation for the sacraments. Children who have made their First Communion could be Altars Servers.

Whatever your interests or talents, please consider volunteering for one of the many ministries in our parish. For more information contact the parish office or pick up a volunteer form at the back of the church and drop it in the collection basket.

The Children’s choir have certainly added to our Eucharistic celebrations. They will begin practicing in September on Friday’s in the meeting room of the rectory at

4 pm. This is a wonderful opportunity for your child to learn music from a trained music teacher. Meredith had done a fantastic job over the last year with the children. With the price of vocal lessons, this is a very good opportunity for your child to develop their vocal skills. For more information, please contact the office or Meredith Wanstall at 416-422-1837.

RReflection What a name for Peter and it might last. Anyone who took

Jesus off his course – tempted him, was a Satan. Peter didn’t

realize that he was an obstacle to Jesus fulfilling his mission in life.

Jesus was teaching them about himself. He had been gradually schooling the disciples about who he really is. Not just a great teacher or magnetic preacher or good friend, orpolitical leader, but the complete revelation of divine love. They achieved their first high mark last week when Peter said, “You are the Christ, the son of the living God.” And

this would bring him to what we call holy week.Love here is love in action. And that’s the way it is.

Ignatius writes – love is in deeds not words. ‘Walk it as you talk it’. Love is forever. It’s a third day thing. It never fails totally.

Maybe later when Peter was on the go again, someone might say Satan. He realized that his way now was to follow the Lord, not his own way. Obstacles come every day – from ourselves, the culture, the church, but the desire is inside us to do our best. It’s all we can do, it’s all Peter would be asked to do in the end, as the Lord would later ask him three times ‘do you love me?’ He knew then that love conquers everything and nothing in him would be a final obstacle to the Lord. ~ by Fr. Donal Neary SJ ~
