1. Warm up for reading – Students read familiar books. 2. Introduction of Plus 1, Minus 1 – Introduce Plus 1, Minus 1 by looking at the cover photo and starting a discussion about how we put things together when we add and take things apart when we subtract. Suggested questions to facilitate introductory conversation: What do you think that this book is about? Describe what the boy on the cover is doing. Can you think of other things that have numbers on them? 3. Skimming and Scanning, Plus 1, Minus 1 – Use this time to introduce or review your lesson focus strategies and/or skills. Suggested skimming and scanning prompts: Are the pictures helpful when you answer the questions? How do you know when to supply an answer? Can you match the numbers with their word counterparts? 4. Reading Plus 1, Minus 1 – Students read independently or with a partner. 5. After reading Plus 1, Minus 1 – Open the conversation with a question that relates to the comprehension strategy of previewing, predicting, and checking the answers. After a brief conversation about the contents of the book, move to questions that support your lesson focus. Suggested after reading content connection questions: How are the flowers on page 6 the same? Different? Predict what will happen if the markers’ caps are left off too long? When can a bicycle helmet protect you? Suggested after reading lesson focus prompts: Explain how training wheels help a bike rider. Do you think that the puppies pictured on page 14 are sisters and brothers? Explain your answer. Why do chefs wear hats? 6. After Reading Application for Plus 1, Minus 1 – Have students complete the reproducible on adding one more. Then encourage them to create their own math sentence on the back. Summary Learn about using the math concepts of plus and minus when you count flowers, markers, puppies, cookies, and bikes.
