Working session 1A1: How much conservation land Europe need, and where? The session will consider some big questions such as: which biographic areas are not adequately covered by protected areas, how much land should be more strictly protected and where are the opportunities to create new protected areas.

Organised by: Natural England (Dr Nicholas Macgregor, Dr Humphrey Crick)Contact: [email protected]

Working session 1A2:Protecting natural diversity: Identification of synergies in geodiversity and biodiversity protection in EuropeThere is close relationship between geodiversity and biodiversity. How can we best achieve conservation and management of geodiversity and geoheritage and what lessons can be learned from protection of biodiversity in Europe? Is Natura 2000 really a coherent European network?

Organised by: European Association for the Conservation of Geological Heritage (ProGEO) and EUROPARC CEE (Enrique Diaz-Martinez, Michael Hosek)Contact: [email protected], [email protected]

Working session 1B1:The IUCN Green List of Protected Areas (GLPA)The session will present of the IUCN GLPA initiative and its opportunities in Europe, including links to Natura 2000 sites. It will review the Standards and assurance procedure and explain the process for next nominations.

Organised by IUCN Global Protected Area Programme (Trevor Sandwith) and French Ministry for Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy (Jean-Phillipe Siblet)Contact: [email protected]

Working session 1B2:Inclusion of biodiversity conservation at land- and seascape levels into global databaseThis workshop seeks to identify common criteria by which to categorize connectivity initiatives and define a set of ecological features to capture relevant aspects of protected area networks at various scales, including migratory species, flyways, transboundary protected areas and marine corridors for inclusion into the global database.

Organised by: UNEP – World Conservation Monitoring Centre (Marcelo Goncalves de Lima, Nina Bhola)Contact: [email protected]

Working session 2A1:Managing the mix: maintaining special nature in protected areas whilst delivering sustainable social and economic development

There is increasing pressure for protected areas provide a range of ecosystem services linked to human well-being and economic development, whilst still providing core areas for species and habitats that are often special and unique. Managing the balance between social, economic and ecological needs is therefore a task of growing importance for protected area staff in partnership with key actors and stakeholders. This session will set out some of the key issues and provide a case study illustrating some of the key issues challenges as context for a discussion from which a number of action oriented recommendations will be drawn.

Working session 2A2: Urban Protected AreasUrban Protected areas are of special relevance to overcrowded and overpopulated European cities. If well designed and managed, they can contribute both to protection of biodiversity and enhancement of human life.

Organised by: WCPA Urban Protected Area Specialist Group (Louise LEZY-BRUNO)Contact: [email protected]

Working session 2A3:Payments for ecosystem services and self-financing of PAsThe session will facilitate interactive discussion on best practices on diverse forms of PES and self-financing mechanisms. The aim will be to highlight those innovative approaches that could secure financial resources to support effective management of protected areas.

Organised by: LIFE+ “Making Good Natura” project and LANDS NGO (Pierluca Gaglioppa)Contact: [email protected]

Working session 2B1:Communicating the value of nature conservationExpressions “Nature” and “Protected area” do not mean the same to different people and nations. This session will provide a platform for sharing experience in communicating the value of nature and protected areas in Europe and discuss which approaches have worked in the past for different audiences. What would be needed to design communication strategies to mobilise people’s support for nature?

Organised by: WWF Austria (Michael Zika )Contact: [email protected]

Working session 2B2:Marine protected areas and climate change, from problems to blue solutionsThe session will review the role of marine protected areas (MPA) in climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies in preparation for the 21th Conference of the Parties of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) with special attention to Natura 2000 network of marine sites.

Organised by: IUCN French Committee (Thierry Lefebvre) Contact: [email protected]

Working session 2B3:Healthy Parks, Healthy PeopleFor a sustainable future, the well-being of all societies depends on healthy ecosystems. Protected areas can conserve healthy ecosystems and improve our health and well-being. The Healthy Parks Healthy People working session will explore the diverse health benefits provided by protected areas

Organised by: EUROPARC (Carol Ritchie)Contact: [email protected]

Working session 3A1:Natura 2000 fitness checkThe European Commission is conducting a comprehensive policy evaluation, “fitness check” on the EU Birds and Habitats Directives. The session will serve as one source of information for drawing policy conclusions on the future of biodiversity conservation policy in the EU.

Working session 3A2:Towards harmonising agricultural and biodiversity policies in EuropeCurrent EU policies have an enormous potential to support or destroy the communal governance and management practices that conserved nature and natural resources through centuries of European history. Such practices keep providing enormous ecosystem services to the environment of Europe and its peoples. The session will provide a broad assessment of the communal governance phenomenon in our continent and an exploration of specific threats and opportunities to promote diverse and successful governance systems in Europe. In this light, the EU agricultural policies will be specifically examined and discussed.

Organised by: ICCA Consortuim (Sergio Couto, Concha Salguero)Contact: [email protected]

Working session 3A3:Connectivity Conservation and Climate ChangeThe session will look at management strategies, actions and best practices to address the challenges of planning for change in managing protected areas and connectivity conservation landscapes in the context of climate change: assessing and selecting adaptation options, moving to action in order to achieve adequate management to maintain species, ecosystems and processes, enabling governance frameworks that allow for holistic approach and integral solutions, building capacity for adaptation, designing resilient protected area networks, and mainstreaming protected areas as a natural solution to climate change.

Organised by: US National Park Service / WCPA-Climate Change Task Force (Leigh Welling), WCPA-IUCN Connectivity Conservation & Mountains / International Connectivity Conservation Network (Olivier Chassot)Contact: [email protected]

Working session 3B1:Multiple international protected area designationsThis session will review different PA designations, assess main challenges for the different Conventions and programmes, discuss the opportunities offered by designations to site managers and conclude with discussion on how to enhance coordination and synergies.

Organised by: WCPA Europe (Pierre Galland) and Bundesamt fur Naturschutz (Barbara Engels)Contact: [email protected]

Working session 3B2:Management of wilderness in Europe in the lights of the EU Strategy 2020This session will present the inclusion of the wilderness protection into the Natura 2000 network and enable discussion on the following questions: what are the challenges to ensure long term wilderness protection what are the challenges for field management actions and use of zonation systems.

Organised by: European Wilderness Society (Zoltan Kun)Contact: [email protected]

Working session 4A1:Engaging youth in conservationyouth are not only leaders of tomorrow; they are leading the way in developing and implementing conservation today. The session will highlight how conservation organizations can effectively empower and integrate youth into their programmes.
