    About This Book

    I cannot live without books.

    - Thomas Jefferson, a man who is now dead.

Lets get down to brass tacks: This book may be aboutliterature about great authors, great

works, great reading, and even great ops but it aint literature. No, my friend, you have entered

the fabulous world of comic strips...where the masters of world literature are treated with as

much loving sarcasm as can be mustered.

So if youre looking to read Moby Dick, this aint it. But if youre looking for some solid zingers on

gigantic albino whales, then hot diggety: Youre in the right place.

These are comic strips crafted for people who love to read: Everything from Seuss to

Shakespeare, Twain to Tolkien. Its all the best literary jabs from the daily comic strip Sheldon,

    collected in one handy container.

Before we get into it, though, we need to meet all the characters that populate the strip, as theyll

be with us throughout our literary journeys. So cast your glance that-a-way, gentle reader, and lets

    meet them now...

    Read in order to live.

    - Gustave Flaubert, another man who died shortly thereafter.

    The Cast

    Sheldon: He's a ten-year-old kid who

earned billions with his own software

    company: Sheldonsoft. Though his huge

riches occasionally tempt him into buying

    something frivolous like, say, Panama,

Sheldon remains pretty much a normal kid.

(Although he does tend to go into little

nerd comas over anything sci-fi related.)

Gramp: Sheldon is raised by his

    grandfather, a warm-hearted guy who's not

quite sure what to make of his grandson's

billions. Now retired, Gramp tries to keep

up with the modern world, only to find

that the main challenge of his golden years

    is fitting into his slacks.

Flaco: Though a lizard, Flaco is Arthurs

adopted son, after a mistaken egg-hatching.

Though he doesnt talk in anything other

    than his characteristic Squee, Flaco

    exhibits a quiet sort of brilliance....and a

    huge taste for adventure.

Arthur: Arthur learned to talk when

    Sheldon downloaded some speech-

recognition software into his head. He's

been trouble ever since. Sarcastic and

    cocky, Arthur's constantly getting into

trouble at home and at the Sheldonsoft

offices. Unlike Sheldon, he's captivated with

the Sheldonsoft billions, and constantly has

    visions of shopping sprees at

    The Sharper Image.

    Dante: Sheldon's not-too-bright friend

Dante is up for most any adventure. He's a

bit of an artist, or at least tries to be.

    Oso: Sheldon's wild 'n woolly

pug, Oso will sleep on most any surface

...when he's not actively destroying the

house. Like most pugs, Oso is two

enchiladas short of the combo plate.
