Overseas, yeah, we try to stop terrorismBut we still got terrorists here livin'In the USA, the big CIAThe Bloods and The Crips and the KKK
But if you only have love for your own raceThen you only leave space to discriminateAnd to discriminate only generates hateAnd when you hate then you're bound to get irate, yeah
Madness is what you demonstrateAnd that's exactly how anger works and operatesMan, you gotta have love just to set it straightTake control of your mind and meditateLet your soul gravitate to the love, y'all, y'all
Write a quick stanza of a poem and rhyme!! Feel free to be goofy and funny if you wish!! You can use this image as inspiration
simile vs. Metaphor
How can you tell the difference?
-Simile uses like or as
-Metaphor does not use like or as
Simile• A comparison using like or as• Shrek: Ogres are like onions.• Donkey: They stink?• Shrek: Yes. No!• Donkey: They make you cry?• Shrek: No!• Donkey: You leave them out in the sun,
they get all brown, start sprouting little white hairs.
• Shrek: No! Layers! Onions have layers!
The lake was like a mirror
Metaphor: A metaphor states that one thing is something else. It is a comparison, but it does not use like or as
Anger is a raging volcano
Life is a highway
Choose a sporting event and write one simile for it and then write one metaphor. Be creative and think outside the box!
1 SIMILE AND 1 METAPHOR

write 1 simile and 1 metaphor
SADNESS, ANGER, FEAR, REGRET, LONELINESS,

PERSONIFICATION•Giving non human objects human like characteristics.•Giving animals human like characteristics.•.

THE SOCCER CLEATS WERE SCREAMING IN
PAIN.
PERSONIFY 1
PERSONIFY SOMETHING IN SPORTS
PERSONIFY SOMETHING IN
NATURE
What is the object being personified and the meaning of the personification?
The wind sang her mournful song through the falling leaves. The microwave timer told me it was time to turn my TV dinner. The video camera observed the whole scene. The strawberries seemed to sing, "Eat me first!" The rain kissed my cheeks as it fell.
** giving non living objects human traits
IMAGERY:** Use of description with sensory words to create a picture for the reader.
The sun stretches out across the icy, blue sky, smattering the horizon with thin wisps of light. The frigid, pristine snow covers the land like a blanket of soft down. The air is cold, crisp and tastes of winter. The sharp mountain peaks point upwards to the soft puffy clouds. The spindly evergreens poke out of the ground.
Use at least 4 of your 6 senses to describe one of the pictures. Use LOTS of imagery!!! Make the picture come alive. Describe it as if you are describing it to someone who has his/her eyes closed. Paint a picture with your words.* Sight* Smell* Taste* Touch* Hear* Feel
IMAGERY
Tone: LOUDsoftSassyupsethappy! excited sarcastic ** Setting the mood for the reader.
Repetition
**Often sets the beat in the poetry.
You can repeat a line, two lines, or just one word
Some nights I stay up cashing in my bad luckSome nights I call it a drawSome nights I wish that my lips could build a castleSome nights I wish they'd just fall off
But I still wake up, I still see your ghostOh, Lord, I'm still not sure what I stand for ohWoah oh oh (What do I stand for?)Woah oh oh (What do I stand for?)Most nights I don't know anymore...
Fun Some Nights

Alliteration-
**two or more words beginning with the same sound to create repetition
Why Writers Use it: It can help connect ideas, make sentences memorable or sound musical.
