Did you know…? ...that in Upshur County, 19% of adults, or about
one out of every five, read below a fourth grade
level?
...that three out of four food stamp recipients
read at the lowest national literacy levels, and
that 43% of low level readers live in poverty?
...that conservative estimates say that low
literacy costs $73 million per year in terms of
direct health costs?
...that low literacy is strongly linked to crime?
70% of U.S. prisoners are in the lowest levels of
literacy.
Reading is absolutely essential to function
well in today’s world. And yet one-fifth of
Upshur County adults have difficulty with
this basic skill.
Fewer than 10% of adults who could benefit
from literacy programs are currently being
served. If someone in your life struggles with
literacy, please encourage them to contact us.
It’s never too late to start reading.
You can make a difference.
Please consider donating the gift of your time by becoming a volunteer reading or math tutor. By helping another adult learn to read, you open a whole new chapter in their lives—and perhaps your own as well.
We hold various fundraisers throughout the year, the most famous being our book sales. Literacy Volunteers of Upshur County is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, and exists solely because of grants, our fundraisers and generous community support. If you would like to help out, or if you would like to donate books, services, or even money, your support is greatly appreciated.
The mission of Literacy Volunteers of Upshur County is to foster and promote literacy and life skills among adults in Upshur County, WV who have low level reading and math skills. Tutoring is done on a one-on-one basis , is completely free of charge, and is strictly confidential.
Please contact us for more information. Office hours are 8:30am-4:00pm Monday—Friday.
It’s never too late.

Imagine...
These are only a few of the many
challenges faced by adults who
struggle with reading or basic math.
-Not being able to write out a grocery list.
-Not being able to open a bank account.
-Not being able to read street signs or flyers.
-Not being able to read the menu at a
restaurant.
-Not being able to read the newspaper—not the
headlines, and not the classifieds.
-Not being able to read and use a computer
keyboard, much less the Internet.
-Not being able to sign permission slips for your
children’s field trips, or read them a bedtime
story.
-Not being able to fill out a job application or
write a resume.
-Not being able to add up your bills, or read
when the due date on them is.
-Not being able to read medicine labels,
warning signs or a voting ballot.
-Not being able to read a letter from a friend, a
family recipe, or a good book.
-Not being able to conduct your own business.
