Overview This resource has been created to support learning in Literacy at Key Stage 1. It supports the teaching sequence for Non-fiction Unit 1: Labels, lists and captions. This resource uses football objects from the Everton collection to help children to read and understand object captions. The images in the resource can be printed out to create a classroom display. This resource can be extended by using a Football Treasure box, please see (link to page), for more details. There are thousands more football images on the Everton Collection website that can be used to help pupils write captions. National Curriculum links Literacy Strategy: Year 1 - Non-fiction Unit 1: Labels, lists and captions Learning Objectives ▪ To write a caption for an object or picture in a complete senteance with a capital letter and full stop

▪ To use simple descriptive language to explore objects from the Everton Collection

▪ To sort objects into lists

▪ To use speaking and listening skills to take part in group discussion

Activity 1 Reading simple object captions

Print out the images and captions included in this resource. Encourage your pupils to read these captions.

Activity 2 Reading captions

Introduce sentences that explain what an object is. Ask pupils to read and complete sentence captions. Encourage pupils to count the number of words on a sentence and point the capital letter and full stop.

Adding more information

Encourage pupils to add more information to object captions.
