Literacy Board Game Project Incorporating DOK Mrs. Woodward 6th Grade Reading
Objective: Students will be in small groups to create a literacy board game. Students will identify various story elements and reading skills to complete this task. Students will apply the knowledge of skills learned in class to organize and create their own literacy board game. Group Size: 45 Students/Group Materials: poster board, card stock, index cards, markers, colored pencils, etc., access to internet and computer, printer, dice (optional), player pieces Step 1 Students will become familiar with various types of learning board games.
Teacher will model the structure and objective of various types of store bought literacy board games.
Step 2 Each group will brainstorm ideas of the literary topic of their game.
Ex: themes, compare contrast, context clues, vocabulary, author’s purpose main idea, point of view, story elements, nonfiction vs fiction, genres, other literacy skills, students may focus on specific story or genre.
Step 3 Students will create a list of a minimum of 20 questions. Students will
include answers. Then edit list of questions. Check for grammar and spelling mistakes and verify answers. Students may write or type question cards and paste on card stock or index cards.
Step 4 Students will create a list of rules for their game. Ex: How does a player
advance? How will they win? Are there special cards or game board spaces?
Step 5 Students will sketch on scrap paper ideas for their game board. Students
may use original drawings and/or computer images. Please document where you got the image.
Step 6 Students will work on the structure of their game board and type the rules. Step 7 Students will model to each group how to play their game. See other side for material ideas.

Board Game Materials:
REQUIRED Game Board: THICK poster board (needs to be able to be folded) 1 large clothing box (to store the game) The following are items that you may find useful in creating your board games. Markers, Sharpie, colored pencils stencils cardstock (to make cards) notecards dice In the past, students brought in small plastic figures, erasers, etc. for game pieces/pawns. Students may print out images to tape/glue onto the board or game cards or storage box.
