Little Lessons in Communication

Communication – open, clear, direct, frequent, honest and empathic – will calm most situations, even during your darkest hours as a manager. You can count on it.

Little Lessons in Communication

If you are reading this, you are probably someone with many good ideas and strong opinions. That’s a great quality. Never lose that. But be aware that not everything you say is a gem. Sometimes, just listen. … and don’t interrupt.

Little Lessons in Communication

If you think you are witty, you probably are. If you think you are funny, you probably are not – at least not in a workplace setting. Witty is harmless, but trying too hard can be perceived badly. Have fun, but earn the reputation of a consummate professional.

Little Lessons in Generosity

It’s not necessary to critique everybody and everything every moment of every day. Value the contribution of others.

Little Lessons in Generosity

Allow a reasonable amount of unintentional failure. Try to judge people on a portfolio of words and actions, not just one incident. Consider all of the things they do right.

Little Lessons in Generosity

Give credit for a job well-done. Share credit for team successes. Never take credit for the innovative ideas of others.

Little Lessons in Generosity

Be kind to and supportive of everyone, including employees at all levels of responsibility! Don’t be one of those managers who bullies the masses, but who will do or say anything to look like a hero to their direct reports. … very unbecoming.

Little Lessons in Generosity

When you look at the faces of your employees, realize that they are complex human beings with opinions and preferences and feelings and daily lives. They make a contribution to your company every day, and they are deserving of the finest leadership you can offer.

Little Lessons in Composure

If you … WHEN you … make a mistake or a misstep, regain your composure quickly and recover gracefully every time. Everybody has been there. Don’t get rattled.

Little Lessons in Composure

If you … WHEN you … disagree with an important decision, keep your emotions in check. Feel the rage just don’t show it. Use your words!

Little Lessons in Composure

If you … WHEN you … face people who disagree with one of your important decisions, allow them to retreat with dignity. In these situations you’ll get the final word. Show understanding and appreciation for the perspectives of others.

Little Lessons in Courage

Fight to the finish? … ALWAYS do so if you have reason to believe that customers, stakeholders or employees will be adversely impacted. Be persistent.

Little Lessons in Courage

Fight to the finish? … NEVER do so over a petty grievance about your own manager. Like it or not, if you are a manager – and particularly if you are a senior manager – you are expected to manage yourself. When you experience minor problems with your manager, state your case once, listen to his/her point of view, negotiate a solution, then shake it off. … and keep your resume current.

Little Lessons in Courage

Fight to the finish? … ALWAYS do so if you are a legitimate victim of discrimination or unfair treatment in the workplace. Certainly do so if a law or policy has been violated.

Little Lessons in Influence

Politics in business is not a dirty word. Oh, you’ll probably shudder when you see politics being used for personal gain. And you’ll ‘for sure’ witness more than one power-grab in your career. But for you, “politics” should be less a source of power and more a means of influence. You are part of a business partnership. You will need strong working relationships with colleagues to achieve your company’s goals.

Keep your relationships authentic – for the good of the enterprise. Be more of a diplomat than a politician.

… The Golden Ticket … No matter what, try to maintain a professional

relationship with your own manager. Communicate what you want/need. If your manager fails to deliver,

stay calm. Don’t overreact.

Remember that you are a leader. One Stop LeaderShop® - The Complete Manager Training Program Visit us at www.onestopleadershop.com
