Listening for Grammar Modal Verbs Lesson Plan

Learning Objectives: Understand modal verbs for requests in a simulated authentic dialogue about ordering in a caf. Use modal verbs accurately and use modal verbs fluently.Preparation Time: 5 minutes

Completion Time: 45 minutes

Resources: Listening for Grammar Modal Verbs Worksheet, Listening for Grammar Modal Verbs Key

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

Ask students to get into pairs and discuss if there is a caf they like in their home town and why they like it.

Presentation (20 minutes)

Give out the Listening for Grammar Modal Verbs Worksheet and ask students to do Exercise 1. Ask students to listen to the dialogue and answer the multiple choice question. When theyve finished ask them to check their answers in pairs and then in class. Answer Key: cIn Exercise 2 ask students to repeat the sentences from the dialogue. Help them to get the sentence stress right and to link words together properly.

Answer Key:1 What can I get you?

2 Can I have an americano please?

3 Can I have a separate jug of milk please?

4 Ill have a cheese and tomato baguette.

For Exercise 3 ask students to read the transcript and listen to the dialogue a final time.

Direct students to Exercise 4. Ask students to get into groups of three and write dialogues in a restaurant incorporating modal verbs. You can give out the Listening for Grammar Modal Verbs Answer Key. Get them to enact the dialogues in class.Practice (20 minutes)

For Exercise 5 ask the class to get into groups of three and write a menu to give to

another group. The groups then conduct a role-play based on the menu given to them.

Check how well the role plays go in class.

Tell the class to use the language above when requesting and ordering in the future.
