Are you having a bad week?

1. Put the story in the correct order.

Strange Things Happen!to shiver – for your body to shake involuntarily because of the cold

2. Did you order the story cor-rectly?

It was just after midnight on November 8th last year.Frank Sharpe was driving home from work. The road was clear and he was driving care-

fully.

Suddenly, a young girl stepped out in front of him.

She was wearing a light colored raincoat and a red scarf.Frank tried to stop but it was too late. He got out and looked under the car but……to his surprise, there was nothing there. While he was looking under the car, he felt

a cold wind……on his face and he shivered. Everything felt strange. He was still looking under the car when a police car pulled up.

The police officers weren’t surprised when Frank told them his story.

“A girl was killed in a car crash on this road in November 1965.

Since then several people have seen her ghost here.”

3. Now, underline the past simple verbs and the past progres-sive verbs

cir-cle

past progressive = was/were + ing

Past progressive is used to give back-ground details in a story

The past progressive is used to talk about an action in progress in the past

“Yesterday lunch time I was eating lunch.”

The action is often interrupted by a shorter action (past simple) or a time expression

“Yesterday lunch time I was eating lunch and suddenly my telephone rang.”

“Yesterday evening I was watching TV when some-body knocked at the door.”

“While I was studying in America, I met so many great people.”

“My mother found my cigarettes, while she was cleaning my bedroom.”

“Last night at 6pm I was eating dinner.”

“In 2006 I was living and working in Thailand.”

“Last night at 6pm I was eating dinner.”- i.e. dinner was in progress at around 6PM

“I ate dinner at 6pm last night.”- i.e. a shorter, completed action in the past

Past simple vs. Past Con-tinuous

Clip 1 – A member of the public was helping a zoo keeper in an empty cage when suddenly… (the cage opened, a gorrilla came in, screamed, hid behind the zoo keeper, slowly walked out, but laughed when they realized it was a prank).

Clip 2 – People were taking a photo for a man when sud-denly…(the gorilla’s cage door opened, growled, looked scared and screamed, tried to escape, but laughed when they realized it was just a prank).

Clip 3 – People were watching a gorilla paint when sud-denly…(turned the painting around and showed the words help, were shocked and confused, but laughed when they realized it was a prank).

Clip 4 - A security guard was sleeping when suddenly…(took a mouse from a cage, hid the mouse, put the tail in the security guards mouth, were shocked and surprised, thought the mouse was in the guards mouth, but laughed when they re-alized it was a prank).
