The report makes recommendations designed to ensure “thatfor every child, in every class, there is an excellent teacher”.

Minister Sandals speaks on the Achieving Excellence RenewedVision for Ontario at the recent TLP Summit

The recent TLP Summit featured some BIG names in theeducation landscape including Dr. Michael Fullan andOntario Education Minister Liz Sandals, who spoke publiclyfor the first time about the province’s renewed vision foreducation which integrates technology and digital learningresources for teachers. I really like the notion of “AchievingExcellence” that is incorporated in the new vision. Theexcitement around the announcement is tempered by themuch anticipated provincial election that will determine if thevision will see the light of day. I welcome your comments onthe vision document and whether you believe it makes thegrade! Kudos to Akela Peoples, TLP’s new CEO, and her teamfor putting together a great program blending education andbusiness leaders in one room.

Mark Carbone, CIO Waterloo DSB, recently hosted his 2ndGoogle Summit that attracted some 650 delegates whereeducators spent a weekend of their own time exploring GoogleApps for education. I’m fascinated by the almost cult followingthat has emerged with Google solutions. Help me understandwhy - I welcome your comments! I suspect the “FREEmium”model is quite compelling as is the seamlessness and ease ofuse. Tune into Mark’s podcast as he is one of the deepthinkers as a CIO type with an education background… not to

Atomic Learning – Online Learning Portal forEducation

Do you need professional PDFs? Try PDFmyURL!

By Tim Gard, TDSB Educator & MSL Report Contributing Writer

I’ve been aware of Atomic Learning for the better part of 5years now. Initially, when I was invited to review this onlineresource my thoughts went back to how I used it then. Ofcourse, I made some assumptions about what I was going tosee – and they weren’t bad ones because my experiencebefore was a good one, however what worked 5 years agowon’t necessarily work today. We’re in a different era when itcomes to online services, not the least of which are onlineservices providing video training. I was pleasantly surprised atthe evolution of this product. Atomic Learning – a 2013 CODiEwinner in three different categories, including Best EducationSolution – is an excellent resource for technology training, staff development, and classroom integration.

MindShare Musings

We've stumbled on to theperfect location for ourMindShare LearningHeadquarters in Calgary! Whatdo you think?

I was reminded recentlywhile in one of myfavourite bagel shops ofthe value of relationships. As I stood at the cashier I

glanced over and noticedsome obvious regularstalking happily amongsteach other . “They’re ourcustomers and ourfriends,” the cashier

proudly stated. To which I said, you taught me somethingtoday. Too often we forget who’s the customer and going thatextra mile to make them feel appreciated. It begs thequestion, do faculties of education train teachers on customerservice and managing parental interactions? At times, duringmy kids elementary school days, I often felt I was interferingwhen I offered to help or provide resources. The future is openand collaborative. I'm hopeful that the shift is starting tohappen.

The CTF survey caught my attention on work life balance. Itbeggs the question, will the teaching profession be lessappealing in the future with the added stress that is clearlyreflected in the survey results? You be the judge. Here’s thelink.

To further complicate matters, I find the ongoing conversationabout the skills gap incresingly concerning in speaking toindustry leaders, including Nolan Bushnell, founder of Atari Iinterivewed. It’s a recocurring theme where young people arenot equipped with the 21st century skills that industry needsand wants. Bushnell himself stated that he’d rather take adropout who is passionate about game design than a graduatewho lacks the essential skills to succeed in the “real” world.
