8 Adamson Henry Anthony (1871-1941) Assistant master (Army class, mathematics), Sherborne School 1901-1908. Scholar of Trinity College, Cambridge. Born 21 January 1871 at Ealing, son of Frank Adamson, builder, and Elizabeth Adamson of Mead House, Ealing, Middlesex. In 1909 he married Leonora Mary Cecilia Saunders (1870-1912), the former wife of C.H. Hodgson. Died 21 August 1941 at ‘Longfield’, Trescobeas Road, Falmouth, Cornwall, aged 70. The following contributed by Martin Quinn: He was a brilliant chess player and beat the reigning world champion Emanuel Lasker in a game in 1898. He was described in his obituary by T R Dawson as ‘a powerful mathematician, third wrangler of his year [third in the mathematical graduation list at Cambridge], and a brilliant chess problem analyst.’ Most of his composition was in the field of fairy chess, where Dawson rated him very highly indeed. He played on top board for Cornwall, and as an endgame analyst he was correspondingly strong if not quite in the class of Grigoriev. He played County Chess for Cornwall where he went on to win the County Championships for 1912, 1913 and 1914.

674 Regan Charles (1851-1933) A.R.A.M. Chief instructor of Music at Sherborne School, 1874-1911. Leader of the orchestra at the 1905 Sherborne Pageant. Born 10 February 1851 at Westminster, son of Timothy Regan, a tailor, and Sugan Regan. Studied music under William Sterndale Bennett at the Royal Academy of Music, where he met his future wife, Maria Jane Tate. Louis Napoleon Parker has also studied at the Royal Academy of Music under William Sterndale Bennett and was sent by him to Sherborne School in 1873 to help his son, J.R. Sterndale Bennett, teach music. Charles married Maria in 1877 and they had three children: Charles Tate Regan (1878-1943), Mary Grace Regan (1879-) and Constance Julia Regan (1880-1957). Charles Tate Regan was educated at Derby (where J.R. Sterndale Bennett had gone as Headmaster) and Queen's College, Cambridge. Charles was made a Fellow of the Royal Society and was Director of the Natural History Museum 1927-1938. Charles Regan retired in 1911. In 1942, Louis Napoleon Parker recalled that after Regan left Sherborne he had to make his living in theatrical orchestras in London where he had to wear a black wig to gain employment. Charles and Maria retired to Wells in Somerset around 1927. Charles died at Tor Street in Wells on 19 January 1933.

By 1911 he was working as an architect in the War Office. During the First World War he served as a Staff Sergeant in the Royal Engineers. In 1925 he was appointed as a draughtsman in the Office of Works.County of Dorset. He produced a plan of the Churchyard at Castleton Church in 1906 which still hangs in the vestry.
