NEWSLETTER

08 MARCH 2020

Romans 4: 18-25

We often feel as though there is a great chasm between us and

the heroes of the faith. Those larger-than-life figures from

Scripture or tradition, whose faith drove them to demonstrate remarkable love and courage, can sometimes seem to represent

a whole “other” category of Christian compared with ourselves.

Yet what was reckoned to Abraham will be reckoned to us by the one who raised Christ from the dead. Fleming Rutledge has

observed that this “unilateral reckoning of God is God’s action”.

It was not Abraham who came near God, but God who came near him. Similarly, it was nothing of Abraham’s own spiritual

prowess that allowed him to bear the promise, for ”he was just

an ordinary man who became extraordinary because God

grabbed hold of him . . . Now what this means for us is that everything that separates us from each other is swept away”.

As those grand figures were depicted in picture, so we all rely

on God’s reckoning faith and righteousness to us. There is no reason to consider ourselves second-rate Christians, anxiously

judging our lives against others—for all of us rely on God who

draws near, reckons righteousness to us, and justifies the ungodly.

God of Abraham, may I be filled with great hope as I rely on you.

From With Love to the World.

Giving can be changed or terminated easily if required. Our Church Council has asked that we raise this matter for consideration by church members. Should you wish to make a change or seek more detail please see Alan Hoskins or Glenda Briggs from Lismore congregation who will gladly assist. Our Ministry team and Lay Preachers include direct giving in the prayer at the time offerings are brought forward. Some members choose to have giving envelopes so that they are able to place an empty envelope on the collection plate. These are available from the office should anyone require them.
