Look what’s been happening in Kindy
In Library time, Tyler
listened to Mrs McInnes
share a story about ‘The
Very Blue Thingamajig’. He
listened very carefully and created his
own Thingamajig picture (just like the
one in the story) using fuzzy felts.
In class, the Kindies were
learning about adjectives.
They used this picture as a
stimulus to brainstorm ideas,
and then they wrote their own stories describing a very scary
Australian animal using lots of adjectives – can you guess which
animal they are describing?
“I am a fearsome frightening animal! I live in a murky swamp with
horrible sticky mud. I have slimy horrible scaly bumpy green skin, a
swishing tail making waves! My teeth are grotty and sharp.” (Joshua)
“I live in a forest. I have spikey skin and I have extremely deadly teeth
to grab tight so the prey doesn’t get away. I have sharp eyes to see
very far. My long tail wacks people away. My wide mouth will snap
you” (Jack)
“I am a terrifying animal. I have a green bumpy back strong legs and a
big long tail. There is a gigantic line of pointy white teeth to grab my
prey. I have a big wide jaw to go snap!” (Meiko)
“I am ferocious! and I live in a disgusting swamp! and my back feet
are very powerful. Chop my teeth are very sharp and wide. My eyes
are very beady and always looking for prey! (Asiah)
I would to say a huge thank you to Joshua, Jack, Meiko and Asiah
(whose work is sampled above), because they made me feel so proud
when they came to our Kinder Orientation Day and read out their
great descriptions to the mums and dads of next year’s Kindergarten
students – they read with such enthusiasm and expression!
Well done all of you.

School Captain Speeches
Nomination forms for the position of School Captain and Vice Captain of our beautiful school for 2017 have
now been received and the shortlisting process is underway. Our prospective School Captains for 2017 will
be presenting their speeches on Thursday 24 November at 12.00 (midday) in the school hall. Parents /
carers are welcome to come along to listen to the presentations made by those students who were
successful in being shortlisted. Voting by the students in Years 2-5 will follow, and the successful candidates
will be notified during our Presentation Assembly at 10.00am on Wednesday 14 December.
C21st Learning in our Classrooms
Digital technology is part of everyday learning at Lismore Heights Public School. Students experiment with a range of devices and technologies that take learning to a whole new level. Green Screen Stikbot Zanimation lets the children create incredible 3D videos on their own green screen using stikbot figures, and then use an app to place their figures in a setting of their choice (under the sea, in an alley, in outer space). And Robotics challenges students to use an iPad to program a device to complete a range of tasks, such as completing a circuit whilst dodging or overcoming obstacles!
Carols by Candlelight Our annual Carols by Candlelight evening will take place on Thursday 1 December this year. This is always a very popular event and well attended by parents, carers, family members and community members. We would like to extend an invitation to one and all to come along and join in the fun. Students are asked to arrive at 5.30pm for a 6.00pm start. As always, our hard working P&C will be running several stalls on the night. To help make this evening a success, our P&C would like to request the support of willing volunteers to help with organising, setting up and staffing the stalls (BBQ etc.). Please contact the school if you are able to help out. Thank you.
Canteen Opening Times
Please remember that from January the school canteen will only be open 4 days a week. This is to take account of the reduction in sales over the past few years. There will be NO canteen on a Tuesday in 2017.
Byron Bay Excursion
On Monday the Stage One students enjoyed the Dolphin
Dreaming excursion to Byron Bay. Aunty Delta and Nigel
shared their knowledge of the local Arakwal Bundjalung
people. We connected to country by participating in the
Welcome Dance and had ochre painted on our faces.
Students listened to dreamtime stories about the dolphin
totem and the native animals in the area. We learnt about the
food the Bundjalung land and sea provides for us. We went on a short bush walk and discussed the different
plants and their uses for things such as medicines, bush tucker and even sandpaper! Students listened to
Nigel play the didgeridoo and the shell and were able to feel artifacts from the area, such as the turtle shell,
whale tooth and kangaroo skin.
The two things we took away from this experience is the significance of valuing and respecting Elders and
the knowledge they pass on, and to only take from the land what you need and not what you want.
We would like to thank all our parent helpers who volunteered their time to attend the excursion.

PBL Rule
Be safe, Be respectful,
Follow Teachers
Instructions
Discuss with your children the importance of following teachers and adults instructions. Adults are aware of the dangers which may impact on your children in the classroom and the playground. Thank you.
Beautiful Healthy Teeth Beautiful healthy teeth are a great
asset. Teeth are necessary for speech, to eat nutritious food and for
smiling.
Plaque needs to be removed properly, twice each day to keep the teeth
strong and healthy. Plaque is a white, furry layer that forms naturally on
teeth every day, due to the food being broken down by the bacteria in the
mouth.
Brushing once a day may not be adequate to prevent tooth decay. Adults
are advised to brush children’s teeth first then let their child take over the
tooth brushing, so they can learn to perform the necessary movements
correctly.
Tooth brushing of older children should also be supervised closely.
Thorough tooth brushing takes 2-3 minutes.
Use a pea sized amount of fluoride toothpaste on a soft
toothbrush.
After brushing, spit out the excess toothpaste and don’t rinse. This
leaves a small amount of toothpaste in the mouth to continue to
offer protection.
Make tooth brushing a fun family activity. Try some of the many
toothbrush timing apps available to assist children to be
motivated.
