‘Our stock is your stock’. Several years ago, we introduced this slogan because we want to emphasize that Lisman does not conduct any business directly with end users. Our stock is available exclusively to resellers; resellers who can consider our stock to be theirs. All our machines are ready for sale and presented under one and the same roof. Traders are welcome to inspect our stock and bring along their end customers to purchase machines directly

from the Lisman stock. We are happy to help! We have separate meeting rooms for negotiations, and create all preconditions to conclude a good deal through our Lisman Hospitality facilities (professional support from area managers, a Nespresso bar and the Lisman company restaurant).

Our stock is certainly impressive, but there are many more interesting things to see at Lisman, too. Our process – the Lisman flow – is certainly worth taking a look at. Each and every day, we work on increasing our efficiency and continually strive to achieve maximum transparency in the sales process. Also: just as our area managers

acquire inspiration and expertise by visiting customers and suppliers, it works the other way around as well. A visit to the world’s leading trader in used forklift trucks is more than a valuable learning experience for Lisman business relations.

Malaysia, our new location

From notepad to tabletDENNIS VAN WIJK IS ONE OF OUR LOYAL LOGISTICS STAFF MEMBERS. HE IS RESPONSIBLE, AMONG OTHERS, FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ALL MACHINES THAT COME IN AT LISMAN.

‘Formerly, I would write everything down. The entire registration procedure was done on paper. Later on, I would enter the relevant data into the system. I can now do everything at once on my tablet: make notes, send photos, share information in real time – whatever I want. I know the status of every machine, at every point in time. Without losing any valuable time, we can now trace the entire process from start to finish.’ To put it briefly: the more transparent all machine-related information can be recorded from the moment a machine comes in; the more transparent the presentation of the end product will be. This is a core value at Lisman and something that all our business relations can rely on when doing business with us.

RELOCATING A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS IN ITS ENTIRETY IS NOT AN EASY TASK. NEVERTHELESS, THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT WE DID. AFTER HAVING VISITED AND ASSESSED MORE THAN 50 PROSPECTIVE LOCATIONS IN KUALA LUMPUR AND CAREFULLY WEIGHED THE PROS AND CONS OF THE ENTIRE OPERATION, WE FOUND A NEW SITE IN MALAYSIA. TELOK GONG IS HISTORY, LISMAN FORKLIFTS ASIA WILL CONTINUE IN BALAKONG.

When choosing our new premises, we based our decision on the wishes of our key stakeholders. In Balakong, our customers will find a clean showroom of over 4000 m² in which all our machines are displayed in an orderly manner: a full-fledged Lisman branch that is easy to reach from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Additionally, we are making every effort to look well after our employees, too. Working conditions here are much more pleasant, both in the office and at the workshop.

Our new premises are more spacious, lighter and easier to access – comfortable for visitors as well as employees.

Finding a new location was everything but easy. Not only did we have to take into account the wishes and interests of our customers and employees; we did not want to make even the slightest concession to our high quality standards. Additionally, we were held to observe strict rules and regulations throughout the entire process. To retain our ‘Bonded

Warehouse’ license we will need to operate fully in compliance with the local customs authorities (Royal Malaysian Customs Department).

We found the perfect location in Balakong. The lay-out and size of the new site suits us perfectly and the office-to-workshop proportions were precisely what we were looking for in terms of space. Although the commute is a longer for some of our staff, we can be assured of their commitment and

loyalty thanks to the outstanding working environment we can offer them.Because Balakong does not have direct access to the port, our new site has been equipped with a loading and unloading dock for flatbed transport. Instead of making use of a side loader for lifting containers onto and from a truck, as we did in Telok Gong, we can now simply load and unload these from a special platform. This faster process compensates for the longer travel time to the port, while transport costs remain unchanged.

Our new branch is easy to reach from the airport as well as from the city. As there are several roads leading to our new site, bottlenecks and frustrating traffic jams now belong to the past. Once they have landed, our business relations will enjoy a comfortable drive along a picturesque route by taxi or the KLIA Express shuttle, which stops in close proximity to our branch.

Tan Hai & Sons, from whom we are leasing the property, welcomed Lisman with open arms – perhaps because we have so much in common. This family-owned business now has its third generation at its helm and, just like us, it has been in business for more than half a century (Tan Hai & Sons is even a year ahead of us). With their help, we were able to furnish our site entirely according to our wishes. We even plan to name our new premises after the founder of the real estate company.

We look forward to receiving our present as well as new business relations in Balakong. Our employees will bid you a warm welcome to our new site and, together with you, we aim to turn this into a great success. We have found our new place and Balakong will be our base camp for the next few years to come.

‘Migrating an obsolete data model to a tailor-made cloud solution in less than a year’s time’, is how Loris Scarpa describes this tremendous challenge in a nutshell. As a product owner, he was involved in the development of Flow from the very start. ‘We started completely from scratch. The first thing we did was to focus on digitising the existing production and logistics processes.’ The new software is Agile developed, in which the most highly advanced technology is used as a web-based platform to guarantee constant accessibility, from any place or at any time. The decision to develop

a system of our own was not a voluntary one. ‘We simply had no other choice,’ explains Scarpa. ‘Because our business is rather specialised, a standardised software solution was not an option.’ Lisman’s unique ERP system is built on an open-source platform and works in the cloud.

It required a considerable investment, but now offers a unique scalable online platform in which all data are protected according to the highest security standard available. And, what may be more important than anything else: it is entirely future-proof.

SEARCH AGENTEvery month, more than 1000 registered customers visit their My Lisman account on our website. This account not only allows them to access price lists and stock specifications in real time; they can also conduct automatic searches here. Dynamic filters work like a personal search agent. Customers using this search function will be notified as soon as a machine comes in that meets all their search criteria. Premium relations can use multiple search agents at the same time, without any concern for spam. Anton Lisman is an entrepreneur to the core. At the tender age of fourteen, he ran his own business: a little antique store on the Oude Gracht in Utrecht, which was unfortunately open only on Wednesday afternoons – when he was free from school. After having completed his education at the renowed automotive school (IVA) in Driebergen, at the age of 19 he entered into the service of his father. Anton Senior. ‘At that time, our business was still very small. I was the first employee to be hired, soon to be followed by my wife. There we were, just the three of us, at the Voordorpsedijk.’

ALWAYS ACTIVETo Anton, running a business is more than being engaged in trade; it is a way of life. ‘I simply can’t sit still,’ he acknowledges. ‘Of course, turning a nice profit won’t make you any poorer, but this is not why I do it. I want to remain active and try out new things; meet new people, collaborate with them and just see where a venture leads towards. That’s just the way I am.’ Anyone who would think that Anton would now be resting on his laurels after half a century of active service, has it completely wrong. ‘Last

year, I travelled to Malaysia several times to look for a suitable location for our new business premises, and there is still enough to do here in the Netherlands as well.’

FEWER CONCERNSThe success of Lisman Vorkheftrucks is a remarkable feat, but Anton Lisman remains modest about his achievements. He lives in a regular apartment among people where he can simply be himself. If there is one thing he’s sure that all this success has brought him it’s this: fewer concerns! ‘We had a very difficult time in the beginning. I used to say that I wore out my shoes on my way to the bank. Every day, I would go there to deposit cheques, and every day I had to face the uncertainty of whether or not we had been paid. Money was always very tight and we were completely dependent on the bank. But that’s all in the past now.’

NO RETIREMENT DATEFifty years of active service, and the word ‘retirement’ has not been spoken aloud once. Anton couldn’t imagine retiring. ‘It’s far too much fun to stop, particularly if you think about all the possibilities today. As long as

I feel well, I am not setting a retirement date.’ Anton enjoys the contact he has with the customers and suppliers and likes to travel around to see what is being traded these days. He also likes answering questions and advising business relations. ‘I am a sort of supervisory board member,’ he explains. Except, I’m not in it for the money but to guarantee continuity. His vast knowledge and experience make Anton an ideal advisor. However, the best advice he can give comes straight from the heart. It has always been his motto, and he has passed this on to his own children: ‘Dare to be an entrepreneur. Start your own business and fall flat on your face, if you have to. This a motto on which many successful businesses are founded.’

‘Far too much fun to stop’

HE WAS THERE FROM THE VERY BEGINNING AND WAS INVOLVED WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF LISMAN FROM A ONE-MAN BUSINESS INTO AN INTERNATIONAL TRADE ORGANISATION FROM CLOSE BY. EVEN STRONGER, THIS DEVELOPMENT WOULD NEVER HAVE COME ABOUT IF IT WERE NOT FOR THE CONTRIBUTIONS MADE TO IT BY ANTON LISMAN. AFTER FIFTY YEARS OF ACTIVE SERVICE, HE LOOKS BACK IN RETROSPECT. ‘I AM HAPPY – I ONLY WISH I WERE 30 YEARS YOUNGER.’

MARK WARD, WHO HAS BEEN MANAGING DIRECTOR OF LISMAN ASIA EIGHTEEN MONTHS NOW, IS IMPATIENT. ‘EVERYTHING WILL BE BETTER IN BALAKONG.’

No, he won’t miss it. The branch in Telok Gong, Lisman’s first branch in Asia, may have been a fine place to start, but not for further growth. ‘We spent five years there, but now it’s time to move on. The inconvenient lay-out of the site and the increasingly poorer accessibility simply thwarted our ambitions.’ Mark has great expectations for Balakong, particularly because he was given carte blanche to set up the site. ‘Our new premises are higher and therefore lighter and cooler. They are also better isolated and much more spacious in terms of their lay-out. We will soon have a much smaller ecological footprint, with less office space and more space outside. Our showroom and workshop are clearly separated from one another. Thanks to the new lay-out, our operations are guaranteed in a better flow, from which our customers will also benefit.’

EVERY CONFIDENCEFinding a new location for this branch took a great deal of time and attention. And, while all this was going on, business went on as usual. Mark is looking back, in his own words, on a ‘tough year’. ‘With the relocation ahead, we started to destock. Less machines means less trade, but we were nevertheless able to keep our sales volume at the same level and increase the sales value. Additionally, we succeeded in retaining our bonded license – the Malaysian customs authorities still have every confidence in us.’

LISMAN FLOW Through his old Barloworld network, Mark was also able to get Willem Stoltz on board. After a short but intensive introduction to the Lisman process in IJsselstein, he is now responsible for the new preparation line, which is tailored especially to the Asian market. ‘What we do goes much further than simply polishing machines and ensuring that the batteries are charged,’ explains Mark. ‘We have to respond to special requirements and circumstances. In the Netherlands, it would be unthinkable to paint the forks of a forklift truck, but in this climate it is absolutely necessary.

Before you know it, they will be covered in rust bubbles. This is no way to present our machines. We have a reputation to uphold.’

ONE STEP AT A TIMEAfter the new Lisman branch in Balakong opened its doors in March, it was time for the real work to start. Mark still has ambitious plans for the future, but will not let himself be rushed. ‘What we are aiming to achieve is growth. We want to retain our position of preferred supplier and aim to enable the entire chain to operate self-sufficiently, with Lisman Vorkheftrucks as the leading supplier of used machines from the EU. We are not in a hurry, but not afraid of hard work. Lisman is winning this race one step at a time.’

2017 ANNIVERSARY YEAR IN RETROSPECT

The festivities started in April with our Open Anniversary Days, a multi-day Lisman event organised on our own premises in IJsselstein. It was attended by numerous relations, among whom we raffled off some great prizes, including a splendid Giant E-bike. It was marvellous to show our company premises and the many facilities we have here to so many of our highly esteemed business relations, while this also offered a fantastic opportunity to bring our entire product range to their attention. A visit to our showroom can be quite surprising, and this occurred more than once during our Open Anniversary Days. Drop by Lisman together with your client to experience this first-hand. The Open Anniversary Days also marked the launch of another large-scale operation: the presentation of wind-proof and water-repellent Helly Hansen jackets to everyone who bought a machine from Lisman. All

in all, we have now sent more than 1100 jackets to business relations all over the world. We hope that everyone who has received one of these unique Lisman jackets will enjoy wearing it very much!

We also organised a fantastic anniversary party for all Lisman employees, their families and retired employees in Rotterdam on 17 June. This was a suitable location, considering that many of our machines are shipped to their new users in faraway destinations via the Port of Rotterdam. On a wonderfully sunny day, we sailed down the Meuse River on a big boat, enjoying a drink and a bite to eat as well as magnificent views of this world-class port. To make our fiftieth birthday party complete, we proceeded with a programme of live music, dinner, drinks and dancing. All guests were invited to spend the night in a splendid hotel. All in all, we can look back at a celebration that completely reflected the spirit of a close-knit family company such as Lisman.

Apart from the celebrations, it was above all a special year for Lisman thanks to the many business relations that surprised us in so many thoughtful ways and at so many moments. We were swamped with letters, cards and emails and received the most wonderful gifts. Thank you very much for all your kind contributions. Your gifts have all been given a special place at our headquarters in IJsselstein. Even if the anniversary year is over, Lisman will continue to give its business relations special treatment in 2018. In the year to come, we will do everything we can to surprise you with suitable offers and great gifts. And, if this is making you impatient, why not simply drop by in IJsselstein or Balakong?
