The Rope of Leadership and Inuence

“How far can you push a rope? Not very far. That’s why true

influencers don’t push.”

A reader asked, “But if you think about how hard and how often to “pull” when are you being strategic and when merely manipulative?”

I thank him for caring enough to want to use influence for good.

First, a powerful influencer does not pull hard; they pull gently.

Regarding the second part of his question, it depends whether you are thinking only of yourself without caring how it affects the other person. That would be manipulation.

On the other hand, if you are focused on helping them; combining the benefits of your goal with THEIR wants, needs, desires, goals, and values then it’s very positive; what I would call “positive persuasion.”

It’s also important to interpret the quote in context. If a person wanted to utilize the message in order to manipulate, they could. But, it’s not good business and it’s not good life.

Once you obtain a reputation for being self-centered and manipulative, you’ll find people staying away from you in droves. And, even those people who must be around you and work with you will resist and perhaps even sabotage whenever possible.

If one wants to use the message of the quote in order to benefit those they are influencing, they can do that. And, that’s what great leaders; what great influencers do.

And, that’s why they are successful.

Ultimate Influence is based on five key principles that occur on an

ongoing basis. In any interpersonal transaction where you desire to

move a person to a different thought or action than they otherwise

would take without your influence, you’ll need to do one or more of the

following (and often all five).

Control your own emotions

Understand the clash of belief systems

Acknowledge their ego

Set the proper frame

Communicate with tact and empathy

Why Young Leaders Drive Old Leaders CrazyBy Dan Rockwell

2. Celebrate and thank more. One strength of young leaders is dissatisfaction. But, when dissatisfaction turns negative, influence declines.

3. Slow down when you feel barriers lifting. Enthusiasm and good ideas don’t lower resistance – connection does. People won’t see how smart you are when they’re protecting themselves from you.

4. Use personal rather than accusatory language. “Our slow progress makes me feel trapped,” is better than, “You aren’t moving fast enough.”

5. Respect and answer the fears of old leaders. You scare old leaders when you don’t appreciate their fears.

6. Channel passion, enthusiasm, and excitement into focus and resolve. Calm determination has more power than vein popping enthusiasm.

7. Tease out the suggestions of experienced leaders. Say something like, “So, if we go the way you suggest, the next steps are…” Old leaders love to be taken seriously.

8. Don’t pressure people to get on your team. Get on theirs.

9. Say what you want. “How can I gain respect?” “Will you help me gain a voice?”

10. Honor experience.

Young leaders are full of piss and vinegar because they haven’t failed enough. Old leaders look down their noses and think, “You’ll smarten up after you get knocked down a few times.”

Old leaders feel superior to young leaders because young leaders haven’t paid their dues. Young leaders devalue the value of experience when they think, “Paying your dues is over-rated.”

Political capitalYoung leaders don’t appreciate what old leaders put on the line to support them. When young leaders screw up, they don’t realize they diminish the prestige of those who selected them.

Young leaders who walk away when things get hard weaken old leaders who are gutting it out.

10 Tips for young leaders

1. Make everyone around you look good. Nothing good comes from pointing out the bad in others when you’re a young leader.

Joan Borysenko, Best Selling Author and Expert on Spirituality and Health“The world has bottomed out. The statistics are dreary. However, there’s the alternate point of view. Unusual positive progressive things happen all the time.

Still it’s clear we are at a crisis points, but it’s also a turning point. Taking a page from my own book It’s Not The End of The World: although some may think we’re at the end, when people of good hearts get together and support one another, what can happen is a rite of passage. In this space we can get out of the rut of the habitual and make room for miracles to happen.

The Buddhists and the Hindus have a word for getting stuck in ruts–sanskaras. They’re like habit patterns of thought formed by repetition in the same way that troughs are created when water runs down hill in the same pathways. I believe those of us who want to better navigate the future can get out of the ruts by changing our attitudes. We must be willing to finally say: ‘I’ve seen enough of the inside of this box. Maybe it’s time to flow in a different way, to look for and find new meaning.’ So I don’t think it’s the end of the world. I think it’s a whole new age!”

Sedena Cappannelli, Author, Co Founder of AgeNation and of the World Council of Wisdom Keepers“George and I speak to the issue of living consciously and aging wisely because we believe both are essential keys to learning how to better

Those of us who weren’t born yesterday, know we are in a time unlike any before it. In addition to the many challenges we face – climate change, energy, education, healthcare, immigration, wealth inequality, gender and minority inequality to name a few -- we are also in a demographic revolution that will, over the next several decades, result in 50% of our population here in the U.S and Canada and in every industrialized country in the world being over 50 for the first time in history. Increasing longevity, decreasing birth rates and shrinking tax base are just a few of the startling and relatively immediate implications this demographic revolution will have for those of us who are older GenXers, Boomers and Elders here in North Amer-ica and billions more around the world.

We have no blueprint or script that describes what billions of us are supposed to do with this additional time we are inheriting. Surely there must be some purpose in the grand design -- other than some outmoded belief in retirement – something of genuine consequence that capitalizes on our wisdom and experience and requires the presence of such an inordinately large number of elders on the planet at this time.

This prompted me to contact several colleagues among the leading women authors and experts of our time, who are also members of AgeNation’ World Council of Wisdom Keepers. Here they share some thoughts that can help us all to begin to write this new Third Act, and in the process, better navigate the future.

Thoughts From The Wisdom Keepers To Help You Minimize Obstacles & Maximize Opportunities In This Brave New World

By George Cappanneli

Page 8: Lisa Nichols The Rope of - Amazon S3 · New growth, winter (hopefully) coming to an end, the promise of summer time in a few short months. For most people it's an exciting time to

navigate these challenging times and to prepare for the remarkable new world that lies ahead. This is a time for tremendous optimism because our challenges give us a clear sign that the old and the no-longer-valuable are breaking down to make way for the new.

Here are a few of the things I believe each of us can do to live lives of greater stability as this occurs.

To be successful in these efforts, let us also remember to be guided as much by our hearts as by our heads so that we might better align our thoughts, words and actions with a more elevated consciousness.”

Barbara Marx Hubbard, Author, Visionary, Social Innovator and The Voice of Conscious Evolution

“We are now going through a phase of evolutionary metamorphosis on planet Earth. Our past life is not sustainable. The planetary timing is moving toward the next phase of evolution, devolution or even extinction.

Millions of us are attempting to evolve ourselves and our culture. This is a Co-creative Society

Remember to be true to our dreams, the dreams each of us has come here to manifest.

Continue to be open to learning from our stumbles and celebrating our breakthroughs.

Commit to a deeper level of healing in all areas of our lives-- physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.

Step more fully into our daily lives with genuine compassion for ourselves and others.

Look beyond physical accomplishments, possessions or wealth as the measure of our success, and instead to the quality of our character, our experience and discernment and turn them into the gold of wisdom.

in which each person is free to be and do his or her best within the evolving whole.

During this process many of us are naturally gaining access to higher frequencies of conscious-ness which need to be integrated with all levels of our self. And one of the primary keys to success in this integration involves putting purpose first. The key is to yearn with all the passion of your being for your own evolution, beyond the separated state. This does not mean that there is nothing else in your life or that you become a hermit in isolation from others. It means keep your attention on the highest frequency of your being and bring your Whole Being into harmony with that frequency.”

Jean Houston, Author, Scholar, Philosopher, Teacher, Visionary Leader

“We are living in the most unique time in human history. The old ways of doing things are no longer working. We are now seeking the emergence of the deeper story… our mythic lives.

Do you feel the passion within, urging you to live the greater story of your life? Myth is always about the making of the soul. It is the journey of the heroic soul as you travel from an outmoded existence to an amplified life. In times of breakdown and breakthrough – which we’re in right now – myths arise telling us of the new heroes, new heroines, and of the noble journey we must take in search of the Possible Human both within ourselves and in others.

How do we evoke this emergence? How do we inspire this possible, passionate human so that we may not just survive our time, but thrive, leaving a legacy of a new way of being for our children, our grandchildren and the future? It is only when we have discovered this possibility that we go beyond our pessimism and create a world in which we make a difference. It is in working with myth in a creative manner that we can gain fresh perspectives on our life journey. Myth can

take us beyond our ordinary, habitual ways of being to the essence of what we really are or can be.”

Very sound advice and some common themes present in their words of these wise women. The reminder that crisis always provides opportuni-ty and the prompt that if we are wise we will remember that the only thing that has ever created substantive change is the exercise of the Power of One.

That quote comes from Albert Einstein, arguably the most intelligent man who ever lived. So, if the smartest man who ever lived said that, wouldn’t we be wise to not only read it, but remember it, internalize it and BELIEVE IT?

My area of interest in coaching (and in life!) is the mind; this extraordinary power we all possess, yet few utilize fully. Part of using the mind fully involves developing and exercising our imagination. This is a mental muscle which gets a lot of use and becomes very strong when we are children, but tends to atrophy as we grow older and “wiser.”

One of the simplest ways to strengthen our imagi-nation is to fantasize. Spending just a few minutes a day fantasizing about what we want, evokes a creative energy that cannot be duplicated by any other means. Some people call this visualizing or visioning and all three terms are synonymous.

The key to effective visualizing is creating an emo-tion to go with the picture. In other words, you don’t just want to be able to “see yourself” driving the new car or living in the new home or loving the new partner, you want to imagine it so clearly that you stimulate FEELINGS to go with it. The pictures are great, but the feelings are the secret sauce.

But what if, like me, you have a difficult time actually seeing the picture? Maybe you’ve given it your best shot, but you’re coming up with a blank screen or a vague, fuzzy image. The only FEELING you’re going to produce while looking at

“Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions.”

you just bought that new car!you finally bought your dream house on (not “at”, ON) the beach!you have fallen madly, deeply, crazy in love with the perfect guy/gal!you just booked a trip to Hawaii for your entire family!your business is thriving to the point of needing to hire another assistant!how amazing your life is, now that you’ve strengthened your IMAGINATION!

Imagination IS Everything!By Linda Ryan

a blank screen is frustration, so try this instead.

Use your IMAGINATION to fantasize about telling your friend…

What would those conversations sound like? More importantly, what would those conversations FEEL like? (The exclamation points are a clue!)

Doing this type of “fantasizing” is every bit as effec-tive as the type where you can actually see the pic-ture. Both create FEELINGS; both elicit that emo-tional component required for swift creation. And both are simple ways to strengthen and develop what Albert Einstein referred to as EVERYTHING.

I really love that the Asymmetrical Press released a book called “Advice to My 18 Year Old Self.” I love them, period, but this is something that’s on my mind all the time. I wish I could go back and talk to myself when I was 18. It’s such a great way to think about what you know now. To that end, here’s some advice to myself. And then? I want you to write yours to yourself. (Oh and buy this book!)

Dear ChrisYou are smart and clever. Stop worrying that people don’t think you are. Your confidence will be far more useful than trying to prove how smart you are.

Make mistakes all over the place. Do it faster. Evidently, you don’t learn well by trying to read or follow the advice of others. You learn by trying something you thought about or read about and seeing how it breaks when you try it.

Here’s a quote I said once that suddenly was everywhere all over the Internet. I’d tell my 18 year old self this, too:

Chris, you are going to mess up with women for decades. You would mess up less often if you were wide open and honest about who you really are, even when it makes them not like you, this will go sooooooo much better than when you try to conform. Just be you. It’s so sexy when you do it right. For some people.

Who you say you are isn’t interesting. What you do is everything. Just do things. That’s way better. Do, and then you’ll never have to tell people who you are. They’ll know.

Serving a community will be your everything. The more you learn how to speak for others, the more you’ll gather people and empower them to speak for themselves. If you started this earlier, you’d be so much less worried about “finding a job.” Man, your life would be more fun sooner.

Finally, Chris, know that all that you do for the world is great, but that the sooner you catch on that your humor is the best way to warm people up to the real lessons you want to teach, you’ll see that everything goes better. It’s like that great philosopher said, “Just a spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down.” Humor is how you’ll remind everyone that they will inherit the earth.

You turned out okay, but I’d love to save you some misery. Either way, you’ll get there, Chris. Promise you will.

Michael and I had a fight this week and it wasn’t pretty.

We were enjoying dinner on Wednesday night when he brought up an idea for a new house project that we’ve been talking about for the last few months. Before he could get the final sentence out of his mouth, I pushed his words aside by blurting out: “That’s a foolish idea!”

It didn’t go over very well. Our date night turned nasty in seconds.

Three days. As much as I can’t stand the stress of unspoken anger, three days of silence is growth for me. In the past I would do everything in my power to resolve the conflict so we could return to peace in the Queendom.

But not anymore.

Like Michael, I’ve learned to sit with uncomfortable feelings, to soothe myself during an emotional crisis, and to take the time and space I need to process the experience. That way I can get clear about my part in creating the mess and what needs to change to make our marriage stronger.

How a ght with my husband taught me how to get my needs met

Angry words. Silent brewing. More angry words. Abrupt end to dinner. Chilly, quiet ride home. Slamming doors. Separate bedrooms. No talking for three days.

By Cheryl Richardson

But boy do I hate fighting.

There are few things that drill an anxious hole in my stomach and fighting with Michael is at the top of the list.

I have to be honest and admit that, these days, the fights are often instigated by me. In my meno-pausal years, I’ve come into my own in a surprising new way and it seems I’ve lost a filter or two. As a result, the pent-up anger of unspoken needs often comes rushing in before I have a chance to slam my mouth shut. Hence the ensuing mess.

Nastiness is not good for a relationship. It only invites defensiveness. And when there’s defensiveness there’s no communication. None.

Someone needs to write a new owner’s manual for the 21st century woman. A treatise that includes how to ask for what you want when you want it, not ten years after the fact when it comes out concealed in a nasty tone that lands you in relationship hell.

When I said to Michael, “That’s a foolish idea,” I did so with a dismissive, frustrated attitude. That’s what happens when you sit on a pile of unexpressed needs because you want to keep the peace; because you want to avoid the hurtful arguing that goes nowhere; or because you’re afraid you’ll have to work too damn hard to get your needs met so you just give up and do everything yourself.

What I really wanted to scream (at the top of my lungs in the middle of the restaurant) was:

Sure, it’s easy for you to have new ideas; you don’t have to get shit done!

I don’t want another house project to manage because I’m sick of all I do to manage things already!

I’m tired of being the one in charge of everything!

I don’t want to carry this heavy weight of resent-ment anymore. I want to drop it, right here, right NOW in the middle of this damn restaurant!

Oh, and by the way, I’d like a little acknowledg-ment and appreciation for all that I do!

And have done!

For years!

And while I sound like I’m really pissed at you, the truth is I’m really pissed at me because I sound like a martyr and a victim and I know it’s my own damn fault. I suck at getting my needs met.

So there!

God I hate to admit this.

I teach this stuff for crying out loud.

And the truth is, I know better.

I know I need to speak up.

I know I need to say what I need when I need it.

And I know that I have to be willing to do what it takes to make sure my needs get met.

But I’m a woman and it’s times like this when I try to remember that, as gals, we haven’t had the right to vote for very long and for centuries we’ve had to imprison ourselves with silence in order to stay safe.

But that’s not the world we live in anymore and the very thing we want most – true partnerships that are balanced and loving and sexy and supportive and romantic and fun, require us to speak up.

When the three days had passed and Michael and I finally talked about the fight, we agreed that it was time to put an end to the pattern of relating that dishonors our love.

I need to stop holding everything inside.

And he needs to listen and respond to my needs.

Yes, before we schedule “date nights” we’d need to schedule “house nights” where we meet on a level playing field every week with an open heart and mind to negotiate together.

And we need to send our inner little kids out to play so they don’t make a mess.

So, while I’d rather not fight, the truth is it’s unavoidable when you share a home with someone.

Spend enough time talking to online marketers or digitally savvy traditional advertisers and you’ll hear lots of conversation—and consternation—about the power of online reviews. According to these marketers, the comments and critiques on review sites such as TripAdvisor and Yelp are key to either their company’s success or failure.

But according to a fascinating new article in this month’s Harvard Business Review, titled “What Marketers Misunderstand About Online Reviews,” the most important factor in determining the significance online reviews play in a consumer’s propensity to purchase is not necessarily the quality of the reviews but the type of product the client is looking for and the way the consumers determine what to buy.

According to the authors, consumer purchase decisions are affected by three different factors: “…Prior preferences, beliefs, and experiences” (P),

“information from marketers” (advertising, packaging, and other marketing tools) identified as M, and “input from other people and information services” (O). The authors say these factors create a zero-sum game where “…when the impact of O on a purchase decision about a food processor goes up,” for example, “the influence of M or P, or both, goes down.”

What’s even more interesting is that the authors have found that the importance of the various factors – P, M, or O – on purchases is less determined by the customers’ demographics and more by the type of product they’re buying. Low-in-volvement purchases that are mostly a matter of habit, a gallon of milk, say, or laundry detergent generally are not influenced by others’ opinions. P, or previous experience, is the most important factor in these decision-making processes.

At the far other end of the spectrum, luxury goods such as designer handbags, expensive watches and upscale automobiles, are also O-in-dependent. That’s because these products appeal to buyers’ emotions instead of their utility.

Chain restaurants are also mostly O-independent because consumers know exactly what to expect from a Subway or McDonald’s and have no need to learn what anyone else thinks. But the uncertainty of independent restaurants makes them O-dependent and explains the success of review sites such as Yelp. Non-luxury cars, too, are O-dependent, with customers conducting extensive research and putting significant faith in the cars’ brand. (Brand value itself can be O-dependent but it can also be increased substantially by savvy M.)

Adding MOP To Your MarketingBy Bruce Turkel

15© 2014 Healthy Wealthy nWise | All Rights Reserved

Finally, digital products such as consumer electronics are very O-dependent with buyers looking to early adopters and more educated users for input and recommendations. But interestingly enough, during sale periods such as Black Friday, the marketers’ influence (M) – such as packaging and in-store promos – becomes more and more important as buyers do not have the time to do the research they’d otherwise conduct.

The authors close the article by pointing out that emerging technology continues to change both sources of O and the way consumers can access that information. They conclude by writing that “as the influence mix evolves, success will come to companies that can closely track the sources of information their customers turn to and find the combination of marketing channels and tools best suited to the way those consumers decide.” Very good advice.

But what the authors don’t point out is that there are things marketers can do immediately to reduce the influence of O and increase their sales. First, a strategically planned move to the luxury end of the consumer spectrum—where emotion overrides intellect—will allow marketers to sell more and more product regardless of available information. Next, marketers can strive to build an emotional connection between their consumer and their brand. In this scenario, the functionality of the product (an attribute ironically never mentioned by the authors) becomes less and less pronounced while what the product does for the user becomes of primary importance.

In other words, building brand value (coincidentally the title of my last book) is one technique retailers and marketers can use to both sell more product and reduce the effect of other’s

posted opinions on those sales. Like the door slamming or tire-kicking that yesterday’s car buyer might have done to determine quality, brand value becomes the shorthand that encourages today’s consumers to purchase.

I woke up this morning with a fire in my belly. No, it’s not from the street tacos I had which caused other problems I won’t mention. It was a fire of desire. A fire to reach at least ONE person today and help them discover their WHAT so they can begin impacting others in the singular way that only they can.

But, where does this fire come from? I am clear that we are each wired to excel in very specific ways, but what keeps the flame burning?

Nelson Mandela endured years of inexcusable treatment because he understood that he was on a mission to serve his fellow countrymen.

Father Michael Pfleger of Chicago puts his life on the line every time he speaks for the voiceless and fights for what’s right in his community.

Helen Keller, despite being blind and deaf, fought through adversity to share her message that she simply knew could empower others.

But, what exactly is this feeling? I don’t create it. It’s just there… and I MUST listen to it. There simply is no choice… mostly because it won’t shut up.

Is it hope? Is it our destiny? Is it our calling? Or, is it simply an annoying voice that somehow got trapped inside during a night of drinking on the streets of New Orleans? (I’m writing this on Fat Tuesday and realized this was a good opportunity to insert New Orleans into one of my posts. Haven’t really had a chance to do that before.)

At the Democratic National Convention in 1988, Rev. Jesse Jackson said, “You must not surrender. You may or may not get there, but just know that you’re qualified and hold on and hold

Keep Hope AliveBy Steve Olsher

out. We must never surrender. America will get better and better. Keep hope alive!”

While many believe that he was referring solely to the state of the American economy, perhaps he was actually referring to the HOPE that can be found within each and every one of us.

What did he know that I’m only beginning to recognize today-—that there is something larger that lives within all of us? That God has planted a microchip of direction that provides the beacon of light we each need and directs us towards our true reason for being?

That despite the trials and tribulations of life, our path has been predetermined, set in stone, and will drive us through hell and high water to accept the mission we’ve been granted because we choose, or shall I say we dare, to accept it?

Or, is this simply a cruel, awful joke? That somehow we’re provided a vision of what is right, what is just, what we’re called to do, and what we know needs to happen, but unless we fight tooth and nail to bring this vision to fruition, it will die, and we will be the only one to blame for its demise?

And, why me? Why you? Why am I the

Page 19: Lisa Nichols The Rope of - Amazon S3 · New growth, winter (hopefully) coming to an end, the promise of summer time in a few short months. For most people it's an exciting time to

messenger for helping people discover their WHAT? Why are you the advocate for _____________ (fill in the blank)?

It’s one of the mysteries of life that I may never fully (or, hell, even partially) understand. But, I move on regardless. Honoring the fire, aerating it and allowing it to grow bigger within.

Because it’s clear that I’ve got a fever. And, the only prescription available to cure this fever is more cowbell… wait, sorry.

The only prescription available to cure this fever is to let whatever bangs on the doors of my soul out into the world and allow it to be free, for the betterment of all, because I have granted it wings and encourage it to soar.

So the fire continues to burn. It will not allow me to rest on my laurels. Like my friend’s three-year-old daughter, it will not be ignored.

And, so I must listen. I must act. I must keep hope alive. And, tomorrow, I’ll do it all over again.

You invested the time and money to create a beautiful website. You're committed to making money doing what you love, but it's not happening as fast as you'd like. Here's a reality check… it's time to stop writing boring copy that leaves your readers confused and uninspired.

You invested the time and money to create a beautiful website. You're committed to making money doing what you love, but it's not happening as fast as you'd like. Here's a reality check… it's time to stop writing boring copy that leaves your readers confused and uninspired.

Here are the top 5 mistakes website owners make when it comes to writing copy:

1. They write for everyone Whether you are a new business owner or a sea-soned business owner on some level you still believe you can serve everyone. Your widget (insert your product or service) will benefit every single person that reads about it..NOT. You keep your copy broad because you're hoping to catch someone, anyone who will work with you. I get it.

Here's the secret..If you want to serve more…you MUST market to less! Let me show you why a NARROW focus is better.

Let's pretend you teach violin. You are looking for more business so you run an ad.

Let's pretend you teach violin. You are looking

By Veronica Drake

for more business so you run an ad.

You're calling EVERYONE and no one at the same time.

Instead do your research.. KNOW who you are targeting and write like this….

We are targeting ONLY Asian Mothers of school aged children. They have an income between 100-150K a year. There is a tradition of musical accomplishment in their heritage. They value the arts and Ivy league education. Their main dream is to have their child develop socially and get into an Ivy league school. Now we know precisely who we are marketing to. I know this because I did my research.

Here's the targeted ad

Asian Mothers help your child honor your heritage.

Is little Bradley timid and introverted? Let me help make him an extrovert using the power of music. Music will open him up to all that is waiting for him; an amazing education, a well read life and lots of choices. BAM! She's sold! You hit all her concerns, hopes, and desires.

2. They suffer from "I" syndromeRule #1 NO ONE cares about you. It makes me cringe when I see I, I, I, I, on a website. Remember, WIIFM. Your reader is thinking

Page 21: Lisa Nichols The Rope of - Amazon S3 · New growth, winter (hopefully) coming to an end, the promise of summer time in a few short months. For most people it's an exciting time to

What's In It For Me…that’s why they are there.. not because they love you.

When they visit your website, especially the home page they want to feel welcomed and understood. If your copy is all about you and how you do what you do they will instantly feel a disconnect. You need to write in their language and solve their problem in a way that makes them feel like you "get them".

3. You write only for SEOI get it.. you want traffic. You want Google to put you on page one. Writing purely for the search engine will not do that and it will bore your readers away for good.

A rule of thumb for me is I write for the reader first and then I go back in an see where I can add keywords. I NEVER load my content with keywords. The search engines are looking for real people, giving relevant information. That my friends is how you get ranked.

4. Use jargonPeople get so caught up in their every day work life that they assume everyone knows their lingo. WRONG. The surest way to lose readers and business is to use industry words in your copy.

Take the mobile phone industry for example. They tell us what WE care about.. unlimited data, big screens, great price. We don’t wanna know about the technology behind the phone, ok, most of us don’t.

5. They try to sound sophisticated It is often thought the bigger the words the smarter the writer.. FALSE. Your readers are looking for an uncomplicated read and they don’t want to scratch their heads wondering what you are trying to say. People will not stick around for something they feel is over their heads. Time is

limited as is patience. This is your opportunity to connect with your readers make the most of it.

Tip: To make sure you copy is easily understood have a 7th grader read it and if they get it it's good to go!

Love and laughter are required to build and hold our lives together. For me love makes up the bricks which we build out of. Ask yourself what you are capable of loving and you will know what your life is about. But what holds that life and the bricks together? We need mortar and the mortar of life is humor. For me this represents childlike humor that isn’t offensive and doesn’t hurt or upset anyone. Humor of this type heals lives.

One of the things that convinced me of the value of humor occurred one evening when my wife and I were out lecturing. My wife Bobbie does stand up one-liner comedy as part of our presentation so people can feel the benefit of laughter and not just hear a lecture about how it alters our physiology. On this particular evening I did not take her seat in the audience, as I usually do, because of the set up of the stage. I sat behind her and watched the audience. The change in their physical appearance after laughing for 15-20 minutes was striking and made me a firm believer in the benefits of humor. Two of her straight lines are, “He who laughs lasts” and “Laughter is contagious be a carrier.” I agree.

On a personal level what I mean by childlike humor is about seeing the world through a

He Who Laughs LastsBy Bernie Siegel

child’s eyes. If you see a sign, Wet Floor, go ahead and do it. On airline flights I would come out of the lavatory looking worried and say, “I may have damaged the plane.” Attendants would hurry over and I’d say, “I dropped something from Italy in the toilet and then I saw the sign, Don’t throw foreign objects in the toilet.” Now all the planes have signs that say, Don’t throw solid objects in the toilet because of crazy people like me.

Many years ago I fell off our roof when a ladder I was climbing broke. I announced to the audience I was telling the story to that I must have an angel because I landed on my feet which seemed physi-cally impossible considering the angle of the ladder etc. A man came up at the end of my talk and said, “You do have an angel and I know his name.”

“I said how do you know?”

“What did you say when the ladder broke?”

“Oh Shit!”

“That’s your angels name.”

I laughed but didn’t realize what a gift he gave me. Now whenever I get into difficult situations and blurt out, “Oh Shit” I start laughing because I know help is on the way. Feel free to make use of my angel when you are in need.

One other example of childlike behavior and humor is in the instructions you either read or hear from people. When it says, sign in upon entering, write, in upon entering. When it says, print your name, print, YOUR NAME. When the sign says, nobody allowed here, go on in and when they shout at you tell them you’re a nobody. Most of the time they let you go knowing if you’re that stupid you are no danger. One guard stepped in front of me and said,

22

“I’m making you somebody and you have to leave now.” Another child appears and I gave him a hug.

The last point I would make is that the world is filled with pain. Why add to it? Why not help heal it? The majority of people feel the world is unfair. It isn’t. It is just difficult. So make it easier for yourself and others. When people ask me, “How are you feeling today?” I say, “Depressed. Out of my antidepressant and my doctor is away so I can’t renew my prescription.” Three quarters say, “I know how you feel and tell me their troubles and offer me some of their antidepressant.” I am not kidding when I tell you this. The others embrace me and help heal me because they have been loved and have joy in their lives.

Be a healer and spread joy through humor and laughter. The world is a human comedy if we but see it that way. Yes, it is a tragic comedy at times but he who laughs lasts. Remember it is not healthy to be serious and normal. Trying to be normal is only for those who feel inadequate. So be a carrier and spread joy and healing. If you embarrass your children regularly they will thank you later in their life. Our children come home and say, “Thanks Dad.” When I ask why they are thanking me they say they either did something crazy at work or school and instead of their being criticized they heard people say, “Well you know who his father is.”

For many, Dr. Bernard Siegel—or Bernie, as he prefers to be called—needs no introduction. He has touched many lives all over the Planet. In 1978, he reached a national and then international audience when he began talking about patient empowerment and the choice to live fully and die in peace. As a physician who has cared for and counseled innumerable people whose mortality has been threatened by illness, Bernie embraces a philosophy of living and dying that stands at the forefront of the medical ethics and spiritual issues our Society grapples with today. In May 2011, Bernie was honored by the Watkins Review of London, England, as one of the Top 20 Spiritually Influential Living People on the Planet. He continues to break new ground in the field of healing, supporting changes in medical education to “humanize” medical practice.

Brainwave stimulation and brainwave entrainment is nothing new. In fact, science has been studying the electrical output of the brain by measuring brainwaves for over 100 years.

The scientific community knows that:

1. Brainwave activity strongly correlates with what a person is thinking, feeling and doing.

2. Brainwave activity can predict physical and metal performance, diagnosis disease and learning problems.

3. Brainwave activity can be influenced by external stimulation -usually auditory and / or visual.

Today we can reliably and predictably impact the electrical activity in the brain. What does that mean to your health, your spirit, your happiness?

Why is Brainwave Stimulation Important to Neuroscientists?

Peer reviewed studies show brainwave stimulation produces remarkable changes over time, in intellectual and cognitive functions when coupled with expert knowledge.

Brainwave stimulation has also shown to provide short term benefits such as improved intellectual performance, stress relief and deeper meditative states, reduce symptoms of many disorders such as ADHD (PTSD) and even optimize the functioning of the brain for specific activities.

For neuroscientist, this is really exciting because anything that can produce a predictable short

term benefit should, over time, begin to become more permanent with intentional repetition.

Why is Brainwave Stimulation Important to You?

With expert production, tracks can immediately change your reactive day while creating deep habitual shifts in your overall health, happiness, peace and prosperity.

Increasingly more precise in regards to how specifically it is able to impact brainwave activity, we can directly enhance focus and memory, help move emotions from depression to joy, increase confidence and self esteem – and deepen your spiritual inquiry.

Is it safe?

Brainwave Stimulation is safe. You do not lose your mind. You expand your response repertoire.Although of course, never to be used when focus is required for safety, or if you have seizures of any sort - brainwave stimulation cannot take over your life, cannot hurt your brain or cause you to do something you don't want to do.

Is this Mind Control?

This is deliberate mind direction. It is deliberate mind control over your own brain. It's important to understand that Brainwave Stimu-lations occurs naturally during the course of our everyday lives. Simply listening to rain has the ability stimulate our brainwave activity into a pattern of relaxed and calm. (Proven Fact)

Choosing your ideal hearing aid can be very confusing. There are so many types and styles to choose from as well as different levels of technolo-gy involved. When making your choice, you need to consider which types of hearing aid are suitable for your hearing loss, which style you would find most comfortable to wear every day, and which level of technology best suits your lifestyle.

their full names, the different styles can be hard to picture if you are unfamiliar with hearing aids. Here is a guide to the different hearing aid styles available.

BTEBTE stands for ‘Behind The Ear’. This is one of the most common hearing aids used by the NHS. It consists of an ear mould with a tube that is attached to a case that sits behind the ear. The case holds the battery and micro-phone or receiver which sends the sound along the tube, through the ear mould and on to the ear canal. This is one of the larger types of hearing aid and is suitable for mild to severe hearing loss.

RICRIC stands for ‘Receiver In Canal’ However you may also hear this style described as RITE – Reciever In The Ear, RIE – Receiver In Ear or CRT – Canal Receiver Tube. In this style of hearing aid, the microphone or receiver sits just inside

the ear canal. There is still a tube connected to a case behind the ear, but because the case does not contain the microphone, it is much smaller and more discrete. There is no ear mould, just a soft dome at the end of the tube containing the receiver. The dome can be vented to allow natural air flow to the ear canal. Because the sound does not have to travel down a tube before it gets to the ear canal, it produces a more natural, clearer sound. This type of hearing aid is suitable for mild to severe hearing loss.

ITE (FS)This stands for In The Ear and is a hearing aid with-out any case or fitting behind the ear. FS stands for full shell, the hearing aid fits into the outer ear and covers the full concha of the ear. Although smaller than the behind the ear hearing aids it is still fairly visible to others. This type of in the ear hearing aid is suitable for most types of hearing loss

ITE (HS)This is another, smaller version of the In The Ear hearing aid. The HS stands for Half Shell because it only covers half of the concha of the ear. These are more discrete than the full shell version and are suitable for most types of hearing loss.

ITCITC stands for In the Canal. The hearing aid is placed in the ear canal with a small part still in the outer ear. These are much more discrete than In The Ear hearing aids. Because they are much smaller they do not have the processing power to compensate for severe or profound hearing loss.

CICCIC stands for Completely In Canal. As the name suggests they sit entirely inside the ear canal and are very discrete. There are not suitable for all types of hearing loss and they do not have the space for many features such as directional microphones.

IIC IIC stands for Invisible In Canal and they cannot be seen unless someone looks directly you’re your ear canal. They are the smallest and most discrete hearing aid available at the moment. Due to their small size, they are not suitable for all types of hearing loss and do not come with many features. If your ear canal is small or an abnormal shape this type of hearing aid may be unsuitable for you.

TechnologyWhen researching hearing aid technology, it is easy to get confused or get carried away with all the exciting things they can do. When finding out about extra features try to keep in mind what you really use your hearing aid for. Think about your lifestyle and the things you have trouble doing with your hearing loss. Some features, such as feedback suppression, are great for everyone. But be careful that you don’t buy extras that you won’t really use.

Here is a brief guide to some of the most common hearing aid technology.

ChannelsMost people with hearing loss find it harder to hear certain frequencies. Todays digital hearing aids are designed to bring the sound frequencies that you cannot hear into your hearing range. It does this using compression channels which alter the frequency of each sound. The more compression channels your hearing aid has the more it will be able to refine

each frequency, giving you clearer sound.

Feedback SuppressionFeedback is the annoying whistling sound that hearing aids make when something or someone gets too close to the microphone or if the aid isn’t sitting in the ear properly. Modern hearing aids are designed with feedback suppression to prevent the whistle when you hug someone or adjust your glasses.

Noise ReductionOne of the problems with hearing loss is that it is difficult to hear conversation when there is background noise. Older hearing aids simply increase the volume of everything around you so it doesn’t really solve this problem. A noise reduction program suppresses the back-ground noise making speech easier to understand.

Fixed and Directional MicrophonesFixed microphones will pick up the sound from one direction, this is useful if you want to focus on sound in front of you and reduce the distracting sounds from everywhere else. Directional microphones pick up the sound from all around you, giving you a more natural listening experience. Some hearing aids allow you to switch from one type of microphone to the other, allowing you to choose the best listening option for different situations.

BinauralIf you need two hearing aids, getting twowith wireless capability will enable them to ‘talk’ to each other and synchronise their volume and programme. So, if you change the program or volume on one hearing aid, the other will adjust automatically.

WirelessWireless hearing aid technology also allows you to connect to other media devices with

wireless capability via simple accessories. This allows you to make hands free calls on your smartphone and stream sound directly from your television, computer or music player. Remote controls are also available which allow you to switch between programs easily and discretely.

This is by no means a complete list of everything that hearing aids can do, but we hope that it has helped you to understand more about their capabilities and what they can do for you. Technology is advancing all the time and the team at Your hearing always keep up to date with the latest hearing aid trends and innovations.

Everyday, people enter the gym for either the first time, or the first time in a long time. They all have great intentions and a resolution to conquer and achieve their goals, but the unfortunate reality, is that most will fail. This is not because they are inferior or weak people. It's simply because of human nature. When we don't get instant results, we tend to move on. Unfortunately, not everything is like mowing the lawn where you can get the immediate gratification from your hard work.

BE CONSISTENTFitness, no matter what your goal is, is going to take time and consistent effort. This means making dietary sacrifices as well as pushing yourself not just in your workouts, but pushing yourself to workout, especially when you don't want to. No matter what you eat, no matter what you supplement with, no matter how many times you go to the gym. There's simply no way around that.

FIND SOMEONE YOU ARE COMFORTABLE WITHAnother reason people may not succeed is because they simply feel lost or intimidated in a gym. A gym is a foreign place for many people and far from their comfort zones. The best thing to do in this case is to seek help and guidance from a qualified and experienced trainer. Not some 20 year old who just got an online certification a week ago and is trying to sell you all the latest supplements or some self proclaimed guru on the internet, but rather an experienced trainer who understands how the body works and of equal importance, one with whom you can relate. If you're in good hands and you feel comfortable, you'll have a far better chance of succeeding not to mention avoid injury.

5 Ways to Get the Most of Your Personal TrainerBy Andy Bruchey

REALIZE IT TAKES HARD WORKSuccess within the realms of health and fitness is achieved the same way most things are achieved in this world. Through hard work, perseverance, and sacrifice. The rewards are great, but they don't come easily through some magic powder, internet workout of the week, or fad diet. If you truly want to succeed, you'll truly have to work for it. After all, if it's worth having, isn't it worth working for?
