LIRA: an overview
• A nationally recognized, volunteer-run, non-profit, education
NGO that seeks to promote the national literature, Philippine
languages, and patriotism
• The oldest organization of poets in Filipino and one of the
country’s premier literary groups
• Managed by “poet-volunteers” from different professions, and
with an average age of 20-30 years old
• Founded in 1985 by National Artist for Literature Virgilio S.
Almario (a.k.a. Rio Alma)
• Declared in 2011 as one of the country’s Ten Accomplished Youth
Organizations (TAYO) in Malacañang Palace by
President Benigno Aquino III
