On Saturday 10 th November 76 Beaver Scouts, Parents, leaders and helpers from Liphook headed to The Ham- phire Beaver Scouts Funday at Paulton’s Park near South- ampton. We joined 3500 more Beaver Scouts from across Hampshire for a fun packed day of thrilling rides, Santa’s Wonderland and Peppa Pig World. We travelled in luxury aboard Richardson Travels brand new 76 seater double decker coach and our driver Phil ensured we got there safely. We were met by ‘Chip’ (Hampshire Beaver Scouts Mascot) who was not camera shy and quickly joined the queues to enter the theme park. The weather was on our side and while it may have been a bit cold, it was dry and sunny all day for us. During the morning all the Beavers got to have fun on all the rides in the park including Kontiki, Tea Cup Ride, Jump- ing bean, Pirate ship, dragon boats and Rio Grande Train. After lunch it was time to visit the amazing Santa’s wonder- land and his incredible toy fac- tory. All the Beavers got to visit Santa in his grotto and took home a present. Unfortu- nately he wasn’t able to fulfil all the Beavers wishes with iPads and Wii U’s J In the afternoon we stepped it up a gear to go on the most ex- hilarating rides at Paulton’s which included the ‘Cobra’ roll- ercoaster, ‘Magma’ the newest and tallest ride at the Park and the ‘Edge’. At the end of the day we headed to the gift shop and back to the coach for our jour- ney home. All the Beavers had an amazing day and took away a special commemorative badge to wear on their uniforms. Here’s to Paulton’s 2013. Scout National Shooting Cham-pionships at Bisley By David Saisbury

Held in October every year, thenational championships seeScouts of all ages descend onthe famous Bisley Camp for aweekend of shooting and funwith others.  The meeting isone of the biggest of the yearfor Bisley which is always verykeen to encourage the partici-pation of young people in thismost disciplined of sports.About 900 competed this year, possibly the most ever.Very damp conditions did notdampen enthusiasm of any ofthe boys as they arrived afterschool on the Friday to pitchtheir tents in the gloom.  Theywere soon over to the warmthof the Sergeant's Mess wherethey ate over the weekend, fora game of cards.  Fortunately, whilst it was wet overnight itstayed dry during the day-good news for the outdoorevents which are a major partof the weekend. The results were good forLiphook.  Eoghan and Domlead the field in the specialistfield target competition with 1stand 2nd places.  The rest  ofour entrants all finished high upthe table, just out of the med-als.  We also scored well in the

junior pistol competition as Ol-lie, Ethan and Tom won bronzemedals.  Jonathan shot verywell in the own pistol categorywith a performance out of themedals, but good enough toearn an invitation to train withthe Scout National Squad.  Hewill join Max who has been withthe Squad for more than ayear. The Bisley camp seems to gen-erate a great deal of excite-ment for the lads.  This yearthey were joined by MatthewTobin who attends Liss andWill Coomber who goes toCamelsdale, both of whom

shoot with us regularly.  It's al-so a time when they are al-lowed a great deal of freedomand are expected to behaveresponsibly on their own initia-tive.  I'm pleased to say thatthey equipped themselves verywell in this respect and it wasflattering to receive comple-ments from the lady who runsthe Old Sergeants Mess abouthow well they had behavedwhen using the Clubhouse. Finally, it's necessary to thankour older boys - Chris, Dominicand Eoghan who provide muchassistance to the adult helpersand guidance to the younger

LIPHOOK SCOUTS CARNIVAL EXPERIENCE 2012Saturday 27th October wasLiphook Carnival, Bonfireand Fireworks night whenaround 40 of our Cubs andScouts had great fun takingpart.

Cubs from all three packs(dressed as birthday presents)appeared on our float whilescouts and explorers walked

the procession round the vil-lage or pulled our trek cartbearing Tom Gunner and hisaccurate water pistol ! Every-one in Liphook Scouts knowsthat 2012 is our fortieth birth-

day year and so it was appro-priate that the theme for thefloat was ‘birthday party’. Jas-

per Gooding kindly ar-ranged for the loan of agigantic tractor and trail-er which was decorat-ed with enormous cupcakes, sponge slices, balloons, bunting and

party lights, and blasting outbirthday songs (thanks toHelen and Josh), while ourtrek cart (pulled along behind)was disguised as a giant 3-tierbirthday cake with Tom burst-ing out of it, making as manypeople as he could all wet.The crowd loved us and wewon a trophy for the best floatwith 50 or less children appear-ing on it. Well done to LiphookScouts. Yeeha !

Everybody who took part is tobe congratulated and thanked– especially the leaders andhelpers who carried out ad-vance preparations or whoerected/dismantled the float onthe day. Thanks to ALL PAR-ENTS who helped us on theday, to Leslie Hollands whokept everyone so deliciouslyfed and coffee’d, to AshleyWhite for the loan of the gener-ator, to Lloyd who gave ussuch a lot of help and drove thetractor, to Simon Coyte and theDistrict (sounds like a new boyband doesn’t it !) for the soundsystem, to Mark Stocker andJewsons for donation of materi-als, and to Tim Bevan for loan-ing the trailer/tractor.

NATIONAL SCOUT AND GUIDE SERVICEOF CELEBRATION AND THANKS GIVING

It is always nice to be thanked and Ihave recently had the privilege ofattending a Service of Celebrationand Thanksgiving at WestminsterAbbey by the Scout and the GuideAssociations. I was invited as myterm of adult service in Scoutinghas now exceeded 50 years. Alsoinvited were those who had beenpresented this year with one of theScout Service Awards, so therewere a lot of gongs on display oneway or another. The service began at noon and wehad to be in our seats by 11.45 am.My brother had attended last yearas he had been awarded the high-est of the Service Awards, the Sil-ver Acorn, and he warned me thathe had queued for half an hour toget in and there is no shelter fromthe elements. So Janet and I got tothe Abbey as soon as we could andonly queued for about 15 minutesand in sunshine I’m pleased to say.To sit in that historic building for anhour was not a problem, there wasso much to see, people coming andgoing, the Queen’s Scout Service

Crew directing people to their seats, clergy and leading Scouters andGuiders making sure everythingwas ready and just taking in thegrandeur of the building. I had notbeen in Westminster Abbey sincemy childhood and Janet had neverbeen there before. We were fortu-nate to be in the second row ofseats in an area I now know to bethe famous Poets Corner and had aclear view of all the participatingclergy and leaders throughout theservice as the pulpit and lecternwere in front of us.The service commenced with ahymn and the colours being parad-ed and presented, followed by theDean of Westminster welcomingeveryone. There followed a succes-sion of readings and hymns; onereading by the UK Chief Commis-sioner Wayne Bulpitt and anotherby Gill Slocombe the Chief Guide. There were Testimonies by youngScouters and Guiders on ‘Why IVolunteer’ very well done and veryinteresting; so good to see and hearand very encouraging for the future

of both organisations. The Addressgiven by Rev. Richard Winslade,District Commissioner of Ampthilland Woburn Scout District was oneof the best address’s I have heardand certainly the best at a ScoutService. Towards the end prayerswere said by Scouts and Guides,we renewed our Promise and afterthe Blessing the National Anthemwas sung but only the first verse! Why did I have to learn three verseswhen I was a Wolf Cub and we al-ways sung at least two verses atthe St. Georges Day Service?Unfortunately we were not allowedto tour the Abbey after the serviceas there was a practice for the Re-membrance Service and as we left,Soldiers and Sailors were going in.We had a wonderful day and I hopethat others from Liphook and fromthe Petersfield District will have anopportunity to experience this inyears to come.

AUTUMN CAMP FOR SCOUTSBY SHEILA WOODS

At last, scouts from Shackleton,Scott and Stirling Troops wereable to enjoy their Winter Camp2012 (postponed from Febru-ary due to majorly freezingweather conditions) during theweekend of 29th/30th Septem-ber. Leaders feared for thiscamp as it poured with rainevery day in the run-up but theRogate site at DangsteinWoods (generously madeavailable by owners Paddy andMandy Cox) was the perfectplace for the activities enjoyedby the boys and girls ofLiphook Scouts.

The style of the camp was asurvival one so all scouts hadto prepare food that was natu-rally sourced – no tins or pack-ets allowed ! Shelter and foodbeing survival priorities, weather proof bivvies had tobe created to cope with anyeventuality. Fortunately, thesun shone and although it wasfreeezzzzing cold over-nightunder a beautiful full moon, everyone had come equippedto be toasty warm. Lots andlots of wood was gathered tofeed the patrol fires on whicheveryone cooked their meals.Chicken cassoulet with vege-tables was made using tripodssuspended above the flames, served with jacket potatoes

cooked in the embers. Somescouts opted to gut and cooksardines as well which were leftover from the game eveningthe night before when rabbits, pheasants, fish and grouse(provided by Stuart West, thankyou Stuart) were prepared andsampled as an exercise infeeding one-self from the wildin survival situations. Puddingwas made of raspberries andapples served with buttery frieddigestive biscuits (OK – so theycame from a packet) withcream (not exactly milked fromcows by us but we imagined itwas !). Marshmallows werecooked over the embers after agame of lanterns in the dark.Fires had to be revived in the

morning to prepare a full Eng-lish breakfast ... mmm, nothinglike the smell of sizzling baconin the open air !

By the time camp ended, allsigns of camp occupation wereremoved, fires doused and cov-ered over, and the land leftexactly as it was found. Paddythe landowner, and the leadersat the camp were dead im-pressed by how well scouts goton with each other and thetasks they were set, especiallyas for many this was their firstsurvival camp and for Ros andJos, their very first scout camp.Well done to everyone andthank you to all the adults whomade the camp possible.

Paralympics Star visits CubsOakhanger and Wheatsheaf Cubpacks were very lucky during thefirst week of October as they hada visit from Liphooks’ very ownParalympics star Olivia Breen.Olivia came along to both packmeetings to tell the Cubs abouther experience in competing inthe games. She explained thatshe had only been running for ashort while and has such hasdone very well to represent GreatBritain at the Paralympics. Shetold the Cubs about her trainingand the build up for the games, and what she had to give up(chocolate for one thing) and oth-er races prior to the games. Oliv-ia then told them about what iswas like to live in the Olympicvillage with the other athletes and

what it was like to take part in theopening and closing ceremoniesof the games. Olivia finished avery commendable 5th in the100m and then in Bronze medalposition in the 4 x 100m final. She finished off her talk by tellingthe Cubs how nice it was afterthe games to be able to go to Mc-Donalds and enjoy a burger(something else that was off lim-its during the games). The Cubsasked her lots of questions andthen had photographs takenwhilst they all had a close look ather Bronze medal. 1st LiphookScout Group would like to wishOlivia all the best for the futureand thank her for the time spentwith the two Cub Packs.

This last year has been a very busy andhectic year with the Group Celebrating its40th Anniversary plus all the other eventswhich have taken place and it has beengreat to see the whole Group, leaders, par-ents and supporters all working together. At the present time our membership, num-bers are very good and we are just aboutmanaging to accommodate all eligible peo-ple on our waiting lists which is very good.At the present time our Cub section num-bers are very high within the three CubPacks which does mean that the choice forBeavers moving on to Cubs will be veryrestricted and there will be a limitedChoice as to which Cub Pack they canmove into.On adult support and leaders we are doingvery well, in the Cub Section with StephenBaker and Lauren West taking on roles asAssistant Leaders and Val Leonard as asection Assistant and in the Beaver SectionNick Harris taking on the role as AssistantLeader.Plans will now be under way by all sec-tions not only for this terms programs butfor all the other major events and campscoming up this year, So if you can help inanyway be it at a section meeting, on acamp, with an activity, event or behind thescenes please do let us known.Bryan JacksonGroup Scout LeaderTel:- 01428 723248
