This Month’s Tale EAST LIONSHere’s a poem about GIS

have a little Satnav, it sits there in my car. A Satnav is a driver's friend, it tells you where you are.

I’ve had the little Satnav, for almost all my life.It does more than the normal one, my Satnav is my wife.

It gives me full instructions, on exactly how to drive."It's thirty miles an hour Dear, And you're doing thirty five".

It tells me when to stop and start, and when to use the brake, And warns me that it's never ever, safe to overtake.

It tells me when a light is red, and when it goes to green, It’s programmed so compulsively, to always intervene.

“Look out for that car ahead, and watch for those behind”, “You’re too close to that car ahead, Slow down if you don’t mind”.

I'm sure no other driver, has so helpful a deviceFor when we leave and lock the car, It still gives me advice.

But with this non-stop counselling, each journey's pretty fraught. So why don't I exchange it, and get a quieter sort?

Ah well, you see, it cleans the house, makes sure I'm proper- ly fed,

And multifunctionality, makes up for modern tech..

hanks to the Club’s membership of the Tatau Pounamu Community Collective, and President Jennifer and 1VP

Brian Halligan’s regular attendance at the Collective’smanagement committee meetings, our Club received the 2020 Environmental Award at this year’s Lions 202L District Convention held in Waihi Last month.

This was recognition of the Eastside community’s environmental

projects organised by the Collective, comprising: the predator trap making and pest control on Mokoia Island, OwhataLakefront reserves, and throughout the Eastside suburbs; riparian planting of native trees and shrubs; stormwater improvement; local wetland restoration; and inorganic rubbish collection. The Collective has been informed of this award and has expressed its satisfaction with this recognition.Later in the Bulletin there is an account of the Collective’scommunity health and welfare strategy the “Piripoho Initiative”.

he exposure given to climate change sceptics' opinions and fake facts in the social media continues

to disappoint. Here is a response:

One of the most scary results of the increasing power of theinternet-based social media is the increasing scepticism about scientific facts. Scientists are bound by a code of ethics which forbids positive proof. They can never prove that a hypothesis is true, only that there is no evidence that it is not true.Respectable scientists are therefore reluctant to use the social media to report conclusions. Disreputable scientist are bound by no such scruples, nor are they exposed to peer scrutiny. In the past they have claimed that smoking is not a threat to human health, that immunisation is dangerous andunnecessary, that large chemical industries are not causing ill health and death among its neighbours, and closer to home, that 1080 is killing the indigenous fauna it’s being used toprotect. The internet demands no credible audit and it appeals to those who prefer to be indignant than properly informed. The meetings of the IPCC are attended by reputable scientists specialising in research directly related to climatechange. Those self-declared expert sceptics don’t attend. There is uncertainty and controversy, and vigorous argument, at the meetings concerning the interaction of influences and the rate of change. BUT not about the fundamental“conclusion” that increasing concentration of greenhousegases, resulting from human activity, is the major influence on climate change, and that the clear demonstration of change in climate is progressive, NOT a cyclical phenomenon. Somereputable scientists believe that the point of no return has already been passed, but even if it hasn’t, while there are self declared scientific sceptics who Governments can use to justify no action, it’s becoming increasingly likely that that point will be reached sooner or later.

he roster for the Eastside Youth Space ran out during the summer break and is re-established

below. David Elliott , Brian Halligan and Wayne Hall have already carried out weekly pick-ups so the roster will start on the week ending Sunday 22 March. The playground now has a substantial carpark runningalong the main road, and the two Council bins have been relocated, but not far, and they are still not much use to us. It has been proposed that our Club should “sponsor” a bin which would be set up by the District Council in the centre of the playground. We will have the bin sign written to acknowledge our sponsorship

he Eastside community has more than its fair share of health and social problems associated with poverty, and

one of the Tatau Pounamu Community Collective’scommitments is the social wellbeing of the community and the safety of its children. It is fortunate to have the services of a dedicated and competent community nurse employed by the Owhata Health Centre and the strategy adopted by the Piripoho Initiative is to support the work she does. This involvesfacilitating her access to learning centres and schools and into the homes of individual families; arranging closer support for her work from health and social agencies by bringing their services into the community and if required into clients’ homes, by organising community events which make the communityaware of the services available, by encouraging families to walk in off the street to ask for help, and by being aware of, and providing support where there are kids exposed to familyviolence. To make sure that the community nurse can spend as much of her time as possible on clinical work Tatau Pounamu will provide administrative support covering patient bookings and reminders, updating statistics and preparing reports, promoting services and events, organising and schedulingmobile clinics, and delivering literature. As required it will also
