FOSTER PUPPY PROGRAM

Helping children with autism spectrum disorder,Autism Assistance Dog Guides provide safety,companionship and unconditional love. Bonding with the Dog Guide helps both the child and their family gain increased independence and social interaction.

Autism Assistance Dog Guides can:

• Provide safety for the child• Provide calming relief for children in high anxiety situations

Seizure Response Dog Guides assist individualswho experience frequent epileptic seizures. Theyare trained to recognize and react to the onset ofa seizure. Handlers feel secure going out knowingthat their Dog Guide is always by their side.

• Bark for help• Activate an alert system if needed• Provide comfort after a seizure

Canine Vision Dog Guides assist people who are blind or visually impaired. These Dog Guides help create an increased sense of mobility for their handler.

Canine Vision Dog Guides can:

• Navigate busy streets, stairs, escalators and other obstacles that are found on most daily routes• Provide safety and independence for people who are blind or visually impaired

Support Dog Guides are for professional agencies helping individuals in traumatic situations. These Dog Guides are trained to provide comfort to victims or witnesses of a crime or sudden tragedy.

• Provide on-scene support when requested

Service Dog Guides are trained to assist people with a physical or medical disability. These Dog Guides help increase their handler’s independence on a daily basis.

Service Dog Guides can:

• Open and close doors• Retrieve dropped items• Can get help or bark for help when needed

Hearing Dog Guides are trained to assist people who are deaf or hard of hearing. With an increased sense of security, handlers are able to feel comfortable in their own home. These Dog Guides are taught to alert to important sounds by making physical contact with their handler and lead them to the sound.

Hearing Dog Guides can:

• Respond to sounds such as an alarm clock, ringing phone and fire alarm• Respond to hand signals if handler uses sign language

Diabetic Alert Dog Guides assist peoplewho have diabetes with hypoglycemicunawareness. They are trained to detect suddendrops in their handler’s blood sugar through scentand alert them so that they can ingest something.

Diabetic Alert Dog Guides can:

• Detect sudden drops in handler’s blood pressure• Activate an alert system• Retrieve diabetic kit and food• Provide comfort after a hypoglycemic episode

Lions Foundation of Canada Dog GuidesLions Foundation of Canada is a nationalcharitable foundation created by Lions Clubs across Canada. Its mission is to assist Canadians with a medical or physical disability by providing them Dog Guides at no cost.

Since 1983, Lions Foundation of Canada has provided specially trained Dog Guides to people of all ages from coast-to-coast.

Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides does not receive any government funding and relies on the support of fundraising events and donations from service clubs, corporations, foundations and individuals across the country. Each Dog Guide costs approximately $25,000 to breed, train and place yet they are provided at no cost to qualified applicants. Please refer to our website for additional information on what is required to be a qualified applicant.
