From the Principal’s Desk Dear Parents, Carers and Friends of Linwood North School Kia ora koutou katoa! Talofa lava! Mālō e lelei! Greetings everyone! After a very busy and often challenging term of eleven weeks, both the students and the staff are ready for a well-deserved break and enjoy our first school holidays. Hopefully the weather will be much kinder than it has been this week! Remember whatever the weather, and even if you are still working, to relax away from the routines of school, rest, keep well and spend time having fun with your lovely children. Do remember to keep up their daily reading with them. It is well known that children who continue practising their reading over the holidays keep achieving at their current level and do not experience the ‘holiday slump’ in progress. Enjoy rereading those favourite books and borrowing new books from our wonderful Christchurch City Libraries. Term 2 Next term, all children are required to wear their Winter uniform from Day 1, including their Kids Can rain jackets on wet days. We would like all students to be ready to participate in their daily Aquagym Swimming lessons for the first two weeks of term. Students who have not had payments organised by the end of Term 1 will not be able to swim and they will remain at school. We are thrilled to have the support of the Te Mapua Trust and welcome Mrs Jo to Linwood North. They will be providing a breakfast in the OSCAR Room on Wednesday mornings from 8.30am – 9.00am and everyone is welcome to come along. Congratulations to Ryan McNicoll in Room 2 for his Principals Award for his fabulous story writing Class Changes We are pleased our school roll is growing and we are welcoming many new five year olds to our school. During this term we have also enrolled many additional students at various other levels of the school. Next term we already have 10 students enrolled to start in Week 1 at various levels of the school; and 8 further students to start during Term 2. At the start of Term 3 we will be opening our 13th class in Room 1. We have identified the need to balance class sizes throughout the school, to make all class sizes equitable for all learners and all teachers. We actually need to reduce the size of some classes and to increase the number in others, so it is necessary to move a group of children from their present classroom. This transfer will ensure all class numbers will be kept at an acceptable size for student learning following the Ministry of Education staffing implementation guidelines which is 1 teacher to 23 students for Year 1 to 3; and 1 teacher to 29 students for Years 4 to 6. All parents and carers who have children transferring classes have been notified individually. Congratulations to Room 8 They were first last week in our School Newsletter Return Competition with 83%! Well done!

A very warm welcome to Linwood North School….. We warmly welcome the following student who has enrolled at our school recently. News from the Karawha Team and Mrs Cherry We have had such a busy Term with lots of learning and great things happening within the classrooms. The children loved receiving their Duffy books and this is always a highlight for them and the teachers listening to the Duffy Role Model and how reading has been so important in his life. We have also had the wonderful Murray Gadd visit and inspire both the children and teachers with his writing. The children were thoroughly engaged in what he was teaching and so keen to get pen to paper. The PJ night was a wonderful celebration of our Learning about Sleep so thank you to our parents for coming along to this and enjoying milk and cookies and some lovely stories with us. it was lovely to have such a relaxing time with our children in their pyjamas.

News from Room 11 and Mrs Walters The final weeks of Term 1 have been busy in Room 11. We have been finishing samples for our Learning Journals and have been super proud to share these with our families. Thank you for all the wonderful comments proud caregivers have made! It is exciting to share these. Some excerpts from our wonderful writing about WW1 and ANZAC day are below. Have a wonderful, safe and restful holiday. I am looking forward to seeing you all back for an amazing Term 2 on Monday April 30. Kate Walters. Kokari Team leader/Room 11 teacher. "I eat the last of the ANZAC cookies my wife and kids sent me, I pulled out the last picture I took of my family. Zac who cries and misses me, Dan who misses me, and my beloved wife that always makes me proud. I hope I don't die. I am scared but this is for my country.........." Dviah "Harriet woke with a boom and screams ringing in her ears. She put her boots on and rushed to the dusty, messy hospital tent........." Jenny "Stephen was far away from his loved friends and family. He had to go to war. He really missed his wife and his kids. He was 29. It was hard being at war. All of the dead. It smelt so horrific....." Georgia "I woke up. I heard gunfire. The second I heard "All right boys, time to go to war, this might be the battle that saves the world!" I was nervous, the sound of the bombs exploding shook me to pieces....." Gemma "I was so scared I ran along the top of the trenches. I was surprised I was still alive. I was more worried about my family back in New Zealand though. I was in Gallipoli fighting the Turkish soldiers. I felt sick, afraid, war was a horror......." Tama Staff Profile: Mrs Teresa Geal – Teacher in Room 5 Kia ora Te Whānau , My name is Teresa Geal. I have been teaching at Linwood North for quite a few years now. I am married to Stuart and we have two adult children – Brendan and Rosemary. We live out of Christchurch, near to Leeston, on a lifestyle block. This makes for a long trip into school which I enjoy in the Summer but not so much in the Winter. In my spare time I love to read, walk our dogs, try to tame my large garden and catch up with my friends. This year, after a long time in the senior school, I have returned to the middle school where I am thoroughly enjoying working with the Year 2 and 3 children.
