MissionThe summer studies program at Linsly offers students an opportunity to enhance knowledge and skills in the core content areas. Motivated students who are academically competitive will benefit from using this time for enrichment. Courses are offered in various formats to accommodate students busy summer schedules: a one week workshop format, classroom format, or new online and hybrid formats.

Middle School Course Offerings
English
Language Arts: Reading Assistance - 5th - 7thHybrid Instruction (Banes Hall and online)This is a skill building class for students entering grades 5, 6 and 7 who need to build their reading skills. Students will use an online reading software with patented speech recognition technology. They begin the program by taking an assessment, and are given a selection of 5 books they can choose from. Program develops word pronunciation, fluency, and phonemic segmentation in addition to comprehension. Students will work on the program in class but are also encouraged to work at home.
Cost: $200 (includes 2 month online subscription)Dates: 6/12, 19, 26 + 7/10, 17, 24Meets Wednesdays from 9am - 12noon Min. 4 Max 10
Creative Writing Workshop - 6th-9th Classroom Instruction (Banes Hall)This course will focus on studying the creative writing process. Students will practice by writing to a variety of prompts. By the end of the course, students will have constructed their own short story.

Honors English Workshop - 8th-9th Hybrid Instruction (Banes Hall and online)This course is designed for students entering grades 8-9 who excel in reading and writing, and would benefit from enrichment in this area. The core of the class will be based on a book about superheroes and comics related to humanity, with a focus on the mechanics of composition, reading analysis and critical thinking.

Middle School OverviewClasses for the middle school
will focus on core skills in English and math. Available to students entering grades 5-‐8, there are opportunities in the core subjects for high performing students who would like to continue developing their skills. Additionally, there are new electives available for middle school students in a one week workshop format. Honors content will be delivered through hybrid instruction. These classes will meet once a week for three hours, with expectations that the students also complete work outside of class time. For course work outside the classroom, support will be delivered using an online course management system or software subscription.

Creating an e-Portfolio - 6th-9thWorkshop (Banes Hall)This session will prepare students entering grades 6-9 to create and manage their own e-Portfolio. While students are constantly creating content and media, this course concentrates on the development of a positive digital footprint. Implementing ePortfolios across grades 6-12 allows students to share academic outcomes, curate, and promote their best work. Through the ePortfolio process, students practice reflection, supporting metacognitive growth. Students will learn web design practices by creating their e-Portfolio in Google Sites.

Intro to Programming - 7th-9thWorkshop (Banes Hall)This summer in the programming class we will be learning the basics components and terminology associated with coding and will finish the week by producing a very basic fully func:onal game.

iCreate with my iPad - 6th-8thWorkshop (Banes Hall)Students will learn to use their iPad as a tool for produc:vity and content crea:on. Some pay apps will be required, and free apps may be added during the course.

Honors Math Workshop - 6th-8thHybrid Instruction (Banes Hall and online)Available to students entering grades 6-8 who are on the accelerated track in the math course sequence. Students will use an online curriculum to assess where they are in their math ability, which will allow them to track their progress throughout the course. The teacher will guide them in this process and keep track of their progress.

Middle School Summer Band - 6th-9thClassroom Instruction (Banes Hall)This course is designed to be a middle school band class and will encourage students to keep playing their instruments during those summer months! Throughout the week we will explore a few full band pieces and also provide short solos for individuals. There may be a small recital scheduled for the week of 7/15.Prereq: Students need to have begun playing a band instrument (6-7 fingerings) and understand basic rhythms

Upper School OverviewStudents entering grades 9-‐12 have an opportunity to expand knowledge in the core areas through small classes delivered through classroom instruction or hybrid instruction (in person and online). These courses are not for credit, but topics are designed to prepare students for the next level. The exception is that after taking Concepts in Algebra II, a student with prior approval could be eligible to take a placement test before the school year begins. This does not get them credit for the course, only the option of taking the placement test.
Upper School Course Descriptions
MathAccelerated Concepts in Algebra II
This course is designed for students who have completed Algebra I, and want to work at an accelerated pace to learn the main Concepts in Algebra II. For a Linsly student, this course does not exempt them from taking Algebra II, but it does prepare them for a placement exam if they choose to take it. Non-Linsly students should check with their school to see if they can have the same opportunity

Online Math Enrichment: Geometry, Algebra I, Algebra II
Available to students who want to review a course just completed, or preview upcoming material for next year’s course. Students will use an online curriculum to assess where they are in their math ability, which will allow them to track their progress throughout the course. The teacher will guide them in this process and keep track of their progress. A mid-quarter and final progress report will be emailed to parents.

Health & WellnessHealthy Habits for High SchoolThis course teaches high school students how to build healthy habits, from what they should be eating, to how to develop a successful workout plan, to how to choose healthy foods at restaurants or the grocery store. Students will begin a nutrition log and exercise journal and develop a program that they can continue throughout the summer.

SAT Prep
Kaplan On Demand Online Course
• students access SAT test prep content online over 6 week time period
• required to complete at least 3 hours of online prep each week
• instructor monitors progress and sends weekly email
• students take on-site practice test after 6 weeks and receive results via email
• after summer course is over students can still continue online test prep - one year subscription included

Yes, our summer studies program is available to all students entering grades 5-12
Can my daughter/son attend summer studies and day camp?
Yes, they can attend summer studies in the morning and summer camp in the afternoon! Contact [email protected] for more info on day camp
What is the dress code?
The dress code is casual, but it is expected that students wear appropriate clothing for the classroom. Clothes that are revealing or disruptive to the educational process are strictly prohibited.
What is the course cancellation policy?
There must be a minimum number of students in each course, as listed on the course description. If the minimum number is not met the course will be cancelled.
We are out of town on vacation during one of the weeks - what is the attendance policy?
There are no make up days for summer school, but students are responsible for finding out the work they missed while they were absent. They should also communicate it to the program director or teacher ahead of time. If they are absent due to illness they should call or email the day of to inform the teacher.
If a teacher misses a day of class due to illness, they will let the students know a reschedule date
Do classes meet on the 4th of July?No, classes will not meet during the week of July 1st-5th.
