Free Vision Screening I am very happy to announce that the Linn Co. R-1 School will be having a free auto refractive vision screen-ing for children 6 months to 6 years of age on Monday, December 6 at the Linn Co. R-1 School. The Missouri Lions Eye Research Foundation is conducting the free screening. This screening involves taking a scan of your child’s eyes with the Plus Optix auto refractor. The results of each child’s vision screen will be provided to par-ents or teachers the day of the screening.

Auto refraction vision testing can detect the presence of six possible eye disorders, nearsightedness, farsighted-ness, astigmatism, anisometropia (equal refraction), strabismus (misaligned eyes) and cataracts. All of these conditions if left undetected can or may lead to Amblyopia (blurred or lazy eye). Amblyopia can be success-fully treated if detected early.

The screening requires no physical contact with your child, and poses no risk to their health. A trained techni-cian will conduct the vision screen, and you will be notified of the results. This is to be considered a prelimi-nary procedure, and does not constitute a diagnosis of vision problems. The costs of this program are being covered by the Missouri Lions Eye Research Foundation.

Benefits of Amblyopia Vision Screenings• All screenings are performed by trained technicians• Screenings are completely non-invasive• Screenings will not disrupt classes, technicians require just a darkened room and two to three minutes of a child’s time • The Foundation will provide educational materials and consent forms for parents to sign prior to the screening• All children screened receive a results card• Parents are encouraged to schedule an eye exam if any vision abnormalities are found.

We encourage anyone with a child 6 months to 6 years in the Linn Co. R-1 District to contact the school and set up an appointment for this free vision screening. Please call 660-244-5035 to set up your child’s appointment for the free vision screening or if you have any questions.

Junior High and High School Basketball

The Jr. High Lady Mustangs finished their season Wednesday night, November 17, with wins by both the 7th grade girls beating Brookfield 7th grade girls and the 8th grade girls beating the Jefferson Middle School out of Columbia. They finished their seasons placing 3rd in the conference with a 6-2 record and an overall record of 10-5. We had a great season and would like to thank all the parents and teachers that made this season such a success. The girls work hard this season on staying together as a team and understand that success comes together when we work together. Way to go Lady Mustangs.

The High School season is getting rolling with 14 energetic and focused players. We only have one senior this year: Shelby Russell; with five Juniors: Skyler Gray, Cassandra Stanphill, Laura Hardy, Kassandra Har-rington, Arieal Rinehart; and five Sophomores: Cammie Ward, Kelsey Barker, Deloris Bright, Maci Hullinger and Brittni Buswell. Coming up from the Jr. High team will be our three Freshmen: Mindy Hayes, Taylor Page and Lauren Russell. They will open the season at the Northwestern Tournament which will be held November 29th-December 4th. We are excited about the season and feel we are going to have a great year as a team. Please come out and support these young ladies at the tournament as well as throughout the season.

“Sportsmanship: What I have learned from other athletes?”

Sportsmanship. It is a great thing, and one of the best things about sports. When displayed, it makes sports more fun to play. You get to go out, have fun competing, and possibly even make some friends doing it. Sportsmanship can be shown in a lot of ways. It can be showing respect to the of-ficials, your coaches, your opponents, and your teammates. It could also be playing hard, or just picking someone up if they fall down. If you’re in the crowd, it’s encouraging your team, but also showing some respect to the opponent as well. I have learned sportsmanship from many people, and quite a few are collegiate or professional athletes. I have learned sportsmanship from Albert Pujols, Tim Tebow, Colt McCoy, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Derek Jeter, Gordon Heyward, Ray Allen, Steve Nash, and Derek Fisher, among hundreds of others. I have also learned it from great displays of sportsmanship. One in particular that comes to mind happened at the 1998 Daytona 500. Dale Earnhardt was trying to win the 500 on his 20th try. He won that day, and when he drove down pit road towards Victory Lane, every crew member from every team gave him a high five to congratulate him on the win. That is just one display, although there are many others that I have learned sportsmanship from. I have also been taught sportsmanship by people in my community. It has been taught to me by my coaches and my family, as well as other athletes. They have showed me to play hard, respect the game, and just have fun.Sportsmanship is an amazing element in athletics. I have learned sportsmanship from professional, collegiate, and local athletes.

With toys and money donated by local churches and community members, the Linn Co.R-1 FCA Huddle was able to prepare 16 shoeboxes full of gifts for needy children. The boxes will be distributed by Operation Christmas Child in areas of the world that are war-torn or affected by natural disasters, such as Haiti. These gifts are the only ones many of these children receive. The FCA members would like to sincerely thank everyone who supported us in this activity. “The more I help others to succeed, the more I succeed.” -Ray Kroc

7th and 8th Grade Essay ContestLogan Brinkley’s essay was chosen as the first place winner for the essay contest Sportsmanship: What I have learned from other athletes. His essay will now be entered in the next level of competition, outside of the district.

Just a reminder that school resume on Monday, November 29th from Thanksgiving Break. I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving holiday. I would like to thank each of the veterans that were able to make it out to eat lunch on Veteran’s Day. I enjoyed visiting with each of you and the students were excited to have you in the building. You are welcome you back at anytime. Winter is right around the corner, and with that in mind, it is in our best interest to keep our staff and students safe. If we receive a fair amount of snow please listen to the radio for school cancellations. We will still call the radio stations as soon as we know school will not be in session, and will try to do so by 6:30 a.m.If it starts snowing or getting slick during the day, listen to the radio to see if we are letting out early. Remem-ber, this is a big district with long bus routes and we have the safety of all of the students as our primary inter-est. Please have plans in place as to where you want your children to go in case we do let out early and you are at work. Do they know what to do? Does the school know what they are supposed to do? Do they need to ride a different bus, go to a different house, or stay with a friend? In the excitement of letting out early, it is hard to get to all of the phone calls that come in, so please make your plans now. In the case of small children, please let us know what the plans are so that we can insure that the students go where they are supposed to. It is much easier to have these plans ahead of time so the phone lines are not being used to make arrangements during early dis-missals.

News from Mr. Livingston

SCHOOL BOARD RECOGNITION WEEKJANUARY 24- 28, 2011

DESIGNATED SCHOOL BOARD RECOGNITION WEEK

Local school board members are dedicated citizens who carry out the truest form of representative govern-ment - volunteer public service. School board service is perhaps the purest expression of grassroots democratic principles upon which our nation was founded. In these challenging times, school board members are called on to be the policy makers for our school dis-trict and are often called upon to make tough decisions. The week of January 24- 28, 2011 has been declared School Board Recognition Week by the Missouri School Board’s Association. It’s a time for educators and citizens across the state to salute these unpaid volunteers who serve public education on behalf of their commu-nities. It seems fitting that at least once a year we thank them for their time and dedication. Being an effective school board member is no easy task. Lay school leaders need to be knowledgeable about many complex educational and social issues. Board members govern individual school districts, establish local policies, approve educational programs, provide necessary physical facilities, hire the superintendent, and share in costs by raising necessary local funds along with state funds to operate district educational programs. School board members’ service ensures that decisions about our public schools are made as close to the needs of our children and communities as possible. Further, our local board members serve as examples for our young people of the excellent tradition of volunteering that is a hallmark of our society. School board members face challenges every day. For their untiring personal dedication and commitment to public service, let’s give our school board members a hand. The local board members serving the Linn County R-I School District and their years of service are listed on the back page of the Ledger every month.
