Linkwood News
Dear Friends,
As I hope you read on page one, the Annual Meeting of Linkwood Civic Club is April 30. This is one of two or three times a year
that we have any opportunity to meet each other, welcome our new neighbors, hear what is going on in our city and our subdi-
vision and elect officers and directors for the coming year. So I really hope to see every one of you there.
There are many of you who have never attended a LCC event. There are many of you whom I have never met in the 6+ years I
have lived here. And I think it is a shame. Yes, I know we are all so busy with work, family, relaxation time, fun time and more.
We have a small subdivision, compared to our nearby subdivisions. So I want to personally invite you to attend the April meet-
ing and enjoy the delicious BBQ dinner catered by Charlie’s BBQ (free to those who have paid their 2016 civic club dues).
Our neighborhood has changed and is changing more daily. We have many new homes that have been built and others under
construction. We are going to embark on an exciting and well needed street repaving and drainage project which will enhance
our area even more.
We are pleased to welcome Blair and Suzanne Martin and O.P. Banks—our newest residents. And more new people are mov-
ing in all the time. Hopefully, if everyone attends the annual meeting, you will have the opportunity to meet them!
I found this quote from Sela Ward, American actress, author and producer, that kind of expresses what I am trying to express:
“For me, when living in Los Angeles and New York, where I don’t know my neighbors, where people don’t necessarily care if
they know their neighbors, I’m missing things that truly fed my soul when I was younger...the exchanges between people, the
caring and the shared history with people”.
See you April 30,
Barbara Shurberg

News from Braeswood Super Neighborhood Submitted by John Nienhuser, President
The following website shares information that should be of interest to Linkwood residents. Planhouston.org provides information that has been accumulated in the process of generating the first ever general plan for Houston. The plan was adopted by the Houston City Council on September 30, 2015. This website includes a data base of all the plans that were submitted to the planning committee by the various organizations throughout Houston. If you search that database, you can find two specific plans that impact Linkwood. Another item that may be of interest to Linkwood residents is that Metro does provide discounted fares for Houston riders who are sixty-five and older. Riders who are 65 to 69 can apply for a card that provides a 50% discount of the fare. Those over 69 can apply for a card that is good for free Metro services. You can get more information on these programs at ridemetro.org or by calling 713 635-4000. The Willow Waterhole is sponsoring their 2016 Music Fest with a Jazz festival on April 23 and 24. There will be 17 pro-fessional bands and ten area schools participating in the event. It will be open from 11 am to 10 pm on the 23rd and from10:30 am to7 pm on the 24th. A craft market will feature more than 30 vendors and six of Houston’s finest food trucks will be on site. See flyer on page 11 of this newsletter. The next meeting of the Braeswood Super Neighborhood will be at 6:30 on Thursday, April 21 at the Linkwood Park Community Building. We will be trying a new format for the meeting and working to get greater participation from all of our subdivisions so that the BSN can be a more effective advocate for our area.
REMINDER FOR DOG OWNERS
In case you were not aware, in Houston there is a noise ordinance that makes it a petty misdemeanor to allow a dog to bark for more than 5 minutes if the barking is plainly audible from a distance of 100 feet. Some dog owners might not realize that when they let their dogs out in the backyard and they continue to bark, that it is very annoying to your neighbors. Actually your neighbor can call 311 and file a com-plaint against you or even hire an attorney to write you a letter threatening to sue because your dogs are a nuisance. Respect your neighbors with the same respect that you would expect!

LINKWOOD LADIES SHARE THE LOVE AND ALSO ENJOY GOOD FOOD!! The Linkwood Ladies shared some Linkwood love at their February meeting held at the home of Suzi Phelps. The ladies enjoyed a delicious lunch, followed by some heartfelt craft-ing. Colorful handmade valentines were sent to former Linkwood Ladies who have moved away or are unable to attend LWL meetings. It was a fun morning of big hearts. The March Linkwood Ladies meeting welcomed writer, speaker, and recognized culinary
expert Elizabeth Escobedo for the program Herbs: From Garden to Table. Chef Elizabeth, to-gether with Linkwood’s own Anna Highnote, teamed up to deliver an aromatic meal that in-cluded herb pesto, mushroom and sage risotto, lavender-lemon shortbread, mint lemonade, and lavender dark chocolate truffles. In addition to the herb presentation, Linkwood Lady E Jane Myers contributed to the natural meeting theme and shared the benefits of Essential Oils.
Coming in April, Linkwood Ladies will enjoy a hands-on art presentation by one of its new-est members! Artist Kim Falconer will share her talents with the group the morning of Wednesday, April 13th at the home of Rhonda Needham. Contact Linkwood Ladies VP of Communications Jenna Arnold at [email protected] for more information on this fun group of neighborhood women.

Recycling to Continue but Glass no Longer Accepted
The City of Houston and Waste Management have reached tentative agreement on a new 2-year contract that will allow the city to continue offering recycling services without any disruption. The only change in service that Houstonians will notice is the elimination of glass from the list of items that are acceptable for placement in the green curbside single-stream recycling bins. Glass, currently has no value on the commodities market, breaks down during collection and transportation and is unduly destructive to the processing equipment. Residents will still have the option of dropping off glass for recycling at the City's neighbor-hood depositories. In announcing the tentative agreement, Mayor Sylvester Turner thanked Waste Manage-ment and Houstonians for being willing to engage in shared sacrifice during a time of fiscal challenges. "This agreement makes good economic sense for the city and for Waste Man-agement," said Turner. "We want to reaffirm our commitment to recycling but we don't want the city tied down to a long-term contract that we cannot afford." The new arrangement, which City Council voted and passed on March 23, offers $2 million in savings over other options that had been on the table. The City's 6 Neighborhood Depository/Recycling Centers are located at: 9003 N. Main St. 77022 14400 Sommermeyer 77041 5565 Kirkpatrick 77028 2240 Central Street 77017 5100 Sunbeam 77033 10785 SW Freeway 77074 More information on the hours of operation and the materials that are accepted at the Neighborhood Depositories/Recycling Centers is available at http://www.houstontx.gov/

NEW FLAGS AND FLAGPOLES FOR LINKWOOD AND THE NEIGHBORHOOD

really welcome people to the neighborhood!
HOUSTON BIKE PLAN The City of Houston has released the draft of the Houston Bike Plan, the next step in the City’s efforts to help make Houston a safer, healthier, and more accessible bicycle-friendly city. “I’m pleased to release this ambitious, yet realistic plan for making Houston an outstanding place for riding a bicycle,” said Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner. “Providing safe, convenient means for cycling to parks, schools and jobs is an important part of providing healthy mobility and recreation choices for Houstonians. I urge residents to review the document and then send us feedback. Your input is essential to ensuring we have a comprehensive plan for moving forward.” Once fully implemented, this Plan will triple the existing bikeway miles and provide six times more high comfort bikeways miles than what exists now.
The Plan includes:
Recommendations to create 328 miles of high-comfort bikeways through modest investments in short-term pro-jects such as street restriping and wayfinding signage on low-volume, low-speed streets.
Adding 86 miles of high-comfort bikeways through Key Connection Projects to help connect neighborhoods and activity centers to a city-wide network.
Establishing a long-term vision to add 861 miles in high-comfort bikeway facilities, including nearly 600 miles that will be developed over time as streets are reconstructed.
A Bicycle Toolbox that contains comprehensive approaches and recommendations for the design of bikeway pro-jects, a policy framework, and programs that will educate and encourage more people to bike.
With the draft Plan complete, the City is seeking feedback from Houstonians. Several online tools and activities are available to gather community feedback on the Houston Bike Plan website at houstonbikeplan.org. Please give us feedback on the plan by completing a brief online survey located at houstonbikeplan.org/participate. The Bike Plan website includes: An Interactive Plan Walkthrough of the draft Bike Plan, Draft Plan and Network Maps, Brief Survey and Interactive Map, a draft letter of support for individuals and for organizations to submit to the Mayor and Council Members, and a calendar of meetings and events where the Bike Plan will be presented. Please consider attending a CIP meeting in your area where the Bike Plan will be presented to the public! As a pilot project, the City will also be hosting a neighborhood workshop in the Gulfton and Sharpstown neighborhoods to develop and refine the draft plan to suit the community’s needs.
The public comment period closes April 11, 2016. The City will then modify the draft Plan based on the feedback re-ceived. Funding partners for the project include BikeHouston, Houston Parks Board, Houston-Galveston Area Council, Federal Transit Administration (FTA), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).
For questions or comments, please email [email protected].

SPRING HAS SPRUNG IN LINKWOOD PARK!!!! Submitted by Jenna Arnold
In an effort to raise money for Linkwood Park renovations, a milestone total of over $50K has been raised to date. APPLAUSE! This total includes a generous donation from District K Council Member Larry Green’s office, and of course donations from neighboring residents and businesses. Recently, Joe Turner, Director of City of Houston Parks and Recreation, toured Linkwood Park. As a result of this meeting, Houston Parks and Recreation and Houston Parks Board met with a landscape architect to review fees and answer scope questions on the Linkwood Park renovation plan. A design plan is in place, and Friends of Linkwood Park representatives will meet with the City of Houston and Houston Parks Board in April to review documents and understand the scope of implementation. In the meantime, fundraising efforts must continue. The 2nd Annual Pics and Picks in the Park is scheduled for Sunday, April 17 from 4-7pm. Art and music come together for an afternoon of park fun! Neighbor-hood photographer Joanna Brandt will be back to capture some family pics in the park (pets welcome too) -just in time for Mother’s Day gifts! Enjoy food trucks, fun and fabulous entertainment from neigh-borhood musicians – what more could you ask for on a Spring Sunday afternoon! Watch for more de-tailed information on this great event. Stay informed: Email [email protected] to get on the Families of South Braeswood email distribution list. Visit the blog at familiesofsouthbras-wood.wordpress.com, and “Like” Families of South Braeswood on Facebook! Thank you to all who have generously donated to this effort. For more information on the Linkwood Park Renovation plan, visit http://houstonparksboard.org/projects/linkwood_park. Checks can be made paya-ble to Houston Parks Board, 300 North Post Oak Lane, Houston, TX 77024 (note Linkwood Park on memo line of your check). All donations to the Houston Parks Board, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
