Objectives:

To propose collaborations between EU and Chinese partners and to set up new

researchprojects aimed to fill the main knowledge gaps on emerging infectious diseases

(EIDs) and transboundary animal diseases (TADs) identified as priorities to both the EU

and China by LinkTADs partners: avian influenza (AI), bovine tuberculosis (bTB), classical

swine fever (CSF), African swine fever (ASF), antimicrobial resistance (AMR), porcine

reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS), Japanese encephalytis (JE) and peste des

petits ruminants (PPR).

Steps in the Discussion Sessions

3h per disease

Disease presentation [30 min]

20 minutes presentation given by one or two speakers + 10 minutes for

questions/comments

The presentation should contain:

- Aetiology

- Epidemiological situation in the World (or anywhere where it is relevant)

- Epidemiological situation in China

- State-of-the-art of the research

o Laboratory research

o Epidemiology research

- Potential knowledge gaps

Define the objectives of potential research projects [20 min]

Each participant writes on different piece of paper up to three research needs that

he/she considers as important. All papers are returned to the facilitator, who then

reads them aloud and put them on a wall board. The facilitator should try and classify

these needs under a small number of research objectives (between 3 and 8) to help

the subsequent discussions. These objectives can be seen as the work packages of the

future project.

Rank the different objective headings according to their priority[30 min]

Participants are asked to agree on splitting 100 units (coins.) between the different

objective headings according to the objective priorities. We can expect a lot of

discussions here. The facilitator will make sure that the discussions stay focused and

that everyone has a chance to speak. Once a consensus has been reached, the three

most important research objectives are selected for further discussions.

BREAK [15 min]

Define the activities that are necessary to complete the objectives [40 min]

Participants are allocated to one objective (maybe creating 3 groups of 3-4 persons).

Using piece of papers, they will be asked to identify the different steps that need to be

achieved to complete the objectives, and sort them if necessary. These steps can be

seen as the tasks of a work package. Discussions should be promoted by the facilitator

s in each group. This step should not last more than 15 min.




Then, each group presents to the two others the rationale for implementing these

steps. Based on the discussion with the other two sub-groups these steps can be

modified.

Global overview of the project [15 min]

The facilitators together with the participants will draft a chart on the board

describing the structure of the project (WP, tasks).

Other activities[20 min]

The facilitator r should promote discussions amongst participants in order to:

- Identify all relevant partners (they do not have to be present at the meeting)

- Identify potential grants that could be targeted to fund these projects.
