WAG54G V2 CAPACITOR REPLACEMENTSUNDAY 27TH MAY 2007 06:21 PM

TAGS: WAG54G, CAPACITOR

I mentioned last week that my modem/router was playing up and that I was going to attempt to fix it. It seems

(so far!) that it has been a success, so I've written a small tutorial for those wanting to try it as well. Thanks to

"revs per min" on whirlpool for helping me out with locating the faulty capacitor. This is for the "v2" wag54g, v1

and v3's have a different layout.

This should fix the problem of ethernet ports dropping out and/or being limited to 10mbps.

For parts, you just need to head into dick smiths, or jaycar and pick up a 33uF 16v electrolytic capacitor. They

should be only a few cents each, and you only need 1, but you might like to get a couple just in case.

You'll also need a soldering iron, solder, a pair of good pliers and a screwdriver.

First step is to take about your modem, they're very easy to get into - start by locating the front rubber

"feet" and pop them out to reveil 2 screws - take the screws out.

1.

Pull off the front panel (with a bit of wriggling).2.

Slide the lower board out from the top cover, being careful of the wire leading to the aerial. You can

remove the arial connector just by popping it off.

3.

There is a single screw you need to remove which holds the main board onto it's plastic tray.4.

Now to the fun part...

The capacitor that we're going to replace is marked in red below:

To remove, I found the best way is to simply pry it from the board using a pair of pliers (leaving the legs still in

place).

Use your soldering iron to heat the points on the bottom of the board, and a pair of pliers to "pull" the legs on the

otherside out once hot enough.

Be careful not to overheat the surrounding components. This is a little tricky, and the solder is quite hard to melt

on these particular joints.

Once you have the capacitor+legs removed, trim the legs on your replacement capacitor down, as they only need

a few mm to be seated in place. Make sure that you take note of which way to mount it, the grey bar (with

"arrows") should face the same way as the one which you removed. Heat the solder joints on the bottom of the

board and try to push your new capacitor into the mounting holes, it might take some fiddling around.

After that is done, hopefully you'll have yourself a fully working wag54g again! You can see from my example

below, the replaced capacitor is slightly taller than the others.

Hi!

I have to force my network card to work at 10mbit with my wag54g, even doing this

resulted on the connection still would drop from time to time. Following your guide seems

to have fixed this, but i still have to force it 10mbits. I suspect i have to change other

capacitor. Does any one know witch on should i do next?

#3 DIMITRIS SAYS:

MONDAY 22ND OCTOBER 2007 04:55 PM

Yes, It worked perfectly just by changing the specific capacitor!

Thanks

#4 JACK SAYS:

MONDAY 17TH DECEMBER 2007 11:51 AM

Seems to have worked perfectly, thank you.

#5 CHRIS COUTTS SAYS:

TUESDAY 8TH JANUARY 2008 06:05 AM

Thanks... a complete cap replacement worked for me too!

#6 CRAIG BROCK SAYS:

WEDNESDAY 14TH MAY 2008 02:02 PM

Great fix mate.....worked a treat.

#7 MARTYNAS SAYS:

FRIDAY 23RD MAY 2008 04:30 AM

Fixed two of my wireless routers. One was given to my friend a while ago, and started

playing, so I assumed it's nackard... My one started playing 8 months later with a same

problem, ethernet kept disappearing... Googled it, as thought there must be a common

problem, and voila - found an answer to my question why it doesn't work. Just fixed both

of my routers for £1.70.

Thanks for the guide

#8 RIKASH SAYS:

MONDAY 2ND JUNE 2008 12:47 PM

Thank you for this clarity. Will give it a try today.

#9 RICO SAYS:

TUESDAY 3RD JUNE 2008 04:28 PM

Thanks a stack - had this repair done. ROuter is fine

#10 EDY.G SAYS:

TUESDAY 3RD JUNE 2008 07:42 PM

ditto ... just spent 22c and a bit of fiddly time with the soldering iron and, voila, good as

new.

Magnficent!

Great howto, thanks. I used this to fix a version 1.2 WAG54G and now it's going great.

I also have a version 2, but the capacitors around the chip are all 22uF, not 33uF as your

howto states. Did yours come with 33uF capacitors or did you replace the 22uF caps

with higher-value ones for some reason?

thanks,

Greg

#12 RUDI_T SAYS:

TUESDAY 5TH AUGUST 2008 02:50 PM

Same picture & Fix Works for AG-241 as well. They all do it after a couple of years.

Thanks for the fix!

#13 GREG TROUNSON SAYS:

SATURDAY 9TH AUGUST 2008 01:43 PM

Thanks again for the tutorial. I fixed my Wag54Gv2 with 22uF caps in the end, but had to

replace all four before the ethernet ports sprang back to life.

#14 NIKITA A. POPOG SAYS:

MONDAY 6TH OCTOBER 2008 08:30 PM

Hi! Nice article!

Question to GREG:

what capasitors have you replaced?

#15 ROBERT SAYS:

WEDNESDAY 19TH NOVEMBER 2008 06:14 AM

22uF also did the job! I experienced big problems over time with my linkspeed, and when

I connected my Synology NAS, the problems really came up. I replaced the cap with a

22uF type and it works great. Keep up the good work!

#16 RUSSELL BULL SAYS:

TUESDAY 2ND DECEMBER 2008 12:21 PM

I found this site a little too late! I'd figured out the problem myself. Rather than replace

the faulty caps with the same type, I used tantalums - I had 10uF 25V ones on hand so

that what I used. Replacing the faulty caps with the same sort will mean the same

problem will crop up again - I'm lazy so I like to fix things once!

FYI the telltale is the ADM6996l chip running hot - nearly too hot to touch. You can

measure the voltage on the tag of the transistor (fet??) and if it's >1.8v then the caps are

most likely dud.

#17 JAVIER SAYS:

Got my ether back with a 22 uf from an old network adapter.

Total cost: NONE. Plus I enjoyed doing it.

Thanks

#19 JOHN SAYS:

SATURDAY 14TH FEBRUARY 2009 04:59 PM

It worked !!! But it was a lot of fiddeling around with the soldering iron. The markings

were different on the new capacitor. Black was grey and visa versa. I just stuck to the

arrow marking and hoped for the best

#20 MIKE SAYS:

TUESDAY 7TH APRIL 2009 09:07 AM

Thanks for that, it works for mine, though it is not as easy as what I thought to take out

the old capacitor. I got my 33uF 25V from jaycar.

#21 VOLKAN K. SAYS:

SUNDAY 12TH APRIL 2009 04:53 AM

Thanks for this guide.

My capacitors are 33uF 16v and I had to replace all four, too!

Works fine with 33uF - 16V capacitor :D

Thx a lot ;)
