PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Fellow members: Welcome back to your Club... we’ve missed you. June is upon us and it couldn’t get here fast enough!

Thank you for your patience with our protocols as we ease back to what we always taken for granted. The pool is open and the golf course is spectacular! Special thanks to our incredible membership director, Kerie Zadrozny. Her hard work is showing incredible results. New membership inquiries are off the charts! This month we anticipate opening back up both outdoor and indoor dining. The new fireplace / entertainment area should be completed in the next few weeks and I’m looking forward to it’s Grand Opening coming soon! Perhaps a 4th of July weekend to remember?? Details coming soon. Lastly, please continue to practice empathy with those around you. Everyone seems to have a different perspective on this pandemic. Remember...it costs nothing to be kind to those that have perspectives that may not be in line with yours. Looking forward to seeing everyone very soon. Sincerely, Chris Christopher S Blass President (Board of Governors) South Hills Country Club

General Manager’s Message June 2020 We are eagerly anticipating the return to clubhouse operations beginning Friday, June 5th. When the Club reopens, Members will notice many new practices and processes, some of which will be interim measures

while others may be in place indefinitely. The Club has steadfastly complied with the different stages of quarantine restrictions that began March 16th ,and we will continue to follow the mandates established by the Allegheny County Health Department, PA Liquor Control Board and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As always, our foremost concern is the health and safety of our Members, guests and staff. Effective June 5th, all areas of the clubhouse including the locker rooms and Pool Bar will be open at 50% of normal capacity. One-half of the tables and chairs have been removed from the Tavern, Sam Parks Grille, Upper Tee and Porch. All tables will be set to accommodate social distancing of at least six feet between guests. A maximum of four stools are permitted per bar, and they must remain six feet apart. The maximum table size is four unless all Members and guests are from the same family. Since the COVID restrictions will significantly reduce our seating capacity, dinner reservations are essential. If there is the threat of rain, seating capacity will be further reduced. Outdoor seating is available on the Patio, Porch and Poolside, with indoor seating in the Tavern, Sam Parks Grille and the Dining Room (if needed.) During this transition phase, we ask you to remain flexible with your reservation time and preferred location for dining. Reservations for dining before 5:00 pm are not required. All Members and guests who are dining in the Club must wear masks as they enter and exit. Masks can be removed while seated. Servers will always wear masks when interacting with guests. During the next two weeks, the Club will cover all tables with cloths. Paper menus will be provided and thrown out after each use. Most condiments will come pre-packaged or will be applied in the kitchen. Diners will not have salt and pepper, sugar or bread and butter available on the table. These items will be provided by your server upon request. Servers will serve food and bussers will clear plates, silverware and glasses. Beverages can be replaced but they cannot be refilled. Plastic beverage containers are also available upon request. Additional housekeeping staff will be on hand to clean and sanitize tables chairs, and restrooms throughout service.

Many of the Club’s traditional summer favorites will be adapted to meet the new recommendations. We are looking forward to the return of Pasta on the Porch beginning Tuesday, June 9th. Diners will be provided an order sheet to select their choice of noodle, sauce, and additional ingredients. The order will be presented to the chef who will prepare the food, which will be delivered by the server. A similar process will be used for the Sunday Omelet Bar on the Porch, which will resume on June 14th. The weekend continental breakfasts for golfers will be available in the Tavern, however, food and beverages will be packaged by a Club server. In simple terms, it is unlikely that self-service buffets, beverage stations or refreshments will be available for the next several months. Golf Members who are using the locker rooms will also notice subtle changes. Large containers of shared toiletries will be replaced with individual packets. Other amenities such as sunscreen, band aids, bug spray, etc. will be provided upon request to the locker room attendant. With the resumption of ala carte dining service, the temporary refreshment stand by the first tee entrance to the Tavern will conclude on Thursday evening, June 4th. We will continue to offer carryout food service. Please place your order by calling 412-885-1100. Tony Traci and the pro staff are researching the updated requirements regarding restrictions for golf. We are hopeful that two players per golf cart will soon be permitted. Please watch Clubster and your email for additional updates. While we are excited about returning to a more “normal” life, we all should remain vigilant in our efforts to practice social distancing, cover coughs and sneezes, and wash or sanitize our hands as often as necessary. Please replace the handshakes and hugs with smiles and waves. Be sure all tissues, towels and hand towels are deposited in the appropriate receptacles. Most importantly, if you do not feel well or have any signs of the COVID virus, please stay home until you have been tested or fully recovered. There will most likely be a few bumps in the road as we move into the Green phase of quarantine. If you have any suggestions, observations, or ideas, please call me at 412-668-3521. Thank you! Sincerely, Frank S. Hamschin

FROM THE LADIES’ TEE

Hopefully everyone has had the chance to play a round of golf on our beautiful course! The weather has been great this past week. I find myself stopping and admiring the beauty of the sky and the pretty colors more than ever. Our WGA was able to provide payouts for some “non-events” in May. Special thanks to Mary Jo Simon for organizing our games and results in “the time before” the Pro Shop could manage it for us. Seems like we are getting back on track for a more traditional season. Here are some upcoming events: • TUESDAY June 2 ~ Stableford (post a “C” score) • TUESDAY June 9 ~ President’s Cup (post a “C” score) • SUNDAY June 14 ~ Red/White/Blue Event • TUESDAY June 16 ~ Flag Day (one of the most popular events!)

• TUESDAY June 30 ~ Pro Shop Mixer “Best 9 of 18” Please contact the Pro Shop to sign up for these events. The WGA Board has made the difficult decision to forego our Invitational for this year. Current guidelines make preparation for such a grand event to be much too complicated and uncertain. We will look forward to celebrating in 2021 with SHCC when we can properly celebrate our 101st Birthday! Our VP’s will continue to provide schedule updates via Clubster. Any questions can be forwarded to Leslie Barton & MJ Simon. Respectfully submitted, Amy Baloh WGA President ‘20

SCHOLARSHIP NEWS

In this time of uncertainty, we wanted to let you know about some exciting news regarding a select group of our Evans Scholars applicants. Thanks to the generosity of WGA Director Mike Keiser, we have started a pilot program this year, awarding 50 caddies who did not become finalists for the Evans Scholarship, individual $5,000 grants to aid in college tuition expenses this fall. Fully funded by the Keiser Family - and separate from the Evans Scholars Program - the grant is renewable for up to five years and based on meeting the criteria of being an active caddie, a solid student and having a high level of financial need. It can be used to offset the cost of attendance at any college of their choice. Click here to see a full list of the Keiser Family Caddie Scholars. A caddie from your club has been selected as a recipient of this grant. The students received their news late last week. Even though they did not receive the Evans Scholarship, we hope this award provides welcome encouragement for them and their families as they face the challenge of paying for college education. We are encouraging them to re-apply for the Scholarship next year, if it fits into their plan. The lessons learned as a caddie will always be with these students, and we strongly believe that caddying helps young people build a foundation for a successful future. We also join with the Keiser Family in believing that no future should go off course because of an inability to pay for college. Best, Mike Maher Vice President, Scholarships and Caddies

What a difference a month makes

in this unprecedented time? It

seems like ages ago that the golf

course was closed, the weather was

anything but summer like and the

outlook for a season of fun was

grim. A month later and the golf

calendar is robust, the pool has

opened, the outdoor dining areas are opening, and our membership has

responded in typical outstanding SHCC fashion. The tee sheet has been

almost completely full which is a testament to everyone’s desire to not

only play golf but to socialize and strengthen our bond as members and

friends.

So what’s ahead for SHCC? The Ted Luther tournament has launched.

The Father’s Day event is scheduled and ready for your participation as

is the South Hills Cup. Importantly, the Men’s Invitational will take

place in the traditional July time slot. The Member/Member is in the

process of being rescheduled and most all other events have either been

retained with the original dates or have already been rescheduled. Tony

Traci and the Pro Shop staff have developed a new event called the Sam

Parks Tournament. The Golf Committee is planning our next meeting in

order to continue to build on the successes that we have achieved as

well as to create additional opportunities for both social and golf

activities for our members.

Please check the golf calendar frequently and sign-up for the events that

are of interest. The Pro Shop is available to help and Clubster is the

tool that continues to share timely information. If you have not used

Clubster, reach out to Kerie or a member of management for help.

There is so much to look forward to this summer and now is the time to

register for events and enjoy the outstanding amenities that are

available at South Hills Country Club.

Yours in Golf,

Steve Fischetti & Paul Baroffio

May has been an incredible month for golf here in Western Pennsylvania. To date, we have only received 1.58” of rain in the month of May compared to the 4.12” last year. Little rainfall coupled with high winds and low humidity have created a firm and fast golf course. The installation of drainage over the past two winters along with selected tree removal has allowed notorious wet areas to dry down resulting in uniform playing conditions throughout the property. It is the goal of the grounds department to keep the golf course challenging but fair. Green speeds have been a direct result of the low humidity and high winds. Although, many members would like to see these green speeds throughout the Summer months, it is not realistic. As temperatures and humidity begin to climb, the air will become “sticky”, and we will start to see green speeds come back down.

Agronomically, turf on the golf course is very healthy. We have made preventive applications for summer patch, pythium root disfunction (timed with soil temperature readings of 65 degrees Fahrenheit), and annual bluegrass weevils (scouting and tracking for timing). Early season venting and verticutting has resulted in deep healthy roots on our playing surfaces. All the hard work this spring has put our turf in great position to thrive throughout the long hot summer months. With the golf course dialed in, we have been able to start detail work around the clubhouse. Mulching, weeding, and bed cleanup are underway. All annual flowers have been planted by the clubhouse and pool area. Flowers and plant materials were purchased from Donati’s Florist in Bethel Park. Once the clubhouse area is complete, we will begin landscape beds throughout the course and ten stand.

In closing I would like to touch base on a few things we have been noticing around the course. 1. Please do not walk up the bunker faces while exiting the traps.

Doing this results in sand sliding off the faces and causing depth issues for following members.

2. Please continue to fix ball marks. Even though the greens are firm, marks are still left when your ball bounces off the back of the greens. Follow the rule fix yours and one more.

3. Utilize all turf BETWEEN the white markers at the range before moving back. This will allow us to move the markers to new fresh areas everyday and allow new seed time to grow without being disturbed (bent grass takes 21 days to germinate).

4. Replace all divot pelts made in the fairways while sand bottles remain absent from the carts.

The grounds department thanks everyone for their continued support and I look forward to seeing everyone out on the course. Best Regards, Bryan Flaherty Golf Course Superintendent
