Welcome!Linköping University (LiU) is renowned for its innovative educational spirit and its long-standing tradition of inter-disciplinary studies and research. The emphasis on both scientific excellence and social relevance are guiding principles for the university’s strategic enterprises.

LiU is organised into broad, multi-disciplinary departments; a framework that facilitates cooperation across disciplines and faculty borders. This, together with an ongoing dialogue with industry and society at large, has been essential for the university’s ability to combine basic and applied research in thematic and innovative contexts.

We promote student-centred learning that encourages individual initiative. From its establishment 30 years ago, LiU has been dedicated to developing models for student-centred learning with innovative approaches such as problem-based learning, portfolio pedagogics and project orientation. This educational approach stimulates critical thinking and intellectual self-sufficiency. Student-teacher communication is characterised by an open and informal atmosphere. The student/staff ratio in Sweden is 9 students per staff (the EU estimated average is 15.9 students per staff).

Currently more than 1,850 international students study at the university each year. Besides the growing number of international students, over 200 guest researchers a year take advantage of the stimulating research environment at LiU. An open-minded setting where people are always striving for quality and a regular influx of new ideas and perspectives are vital for a dynamic academic community.

I do hope you will have a rewarding time, acquiring new ideas and meeting new friends. Welcome to Linköping University!

Study information

In the space of only three decades, LiU has become internationally renowned for its innovative educational spirit and its success in inter-disciplinary co-operation.

ARTS AND SCIENCES. The Faculty of Arts and Sciences offers bachelor’s pro-grammes, master’s programmes and single-subject courses within around 40 subjects areas encompassing behavioural sciences, economics and business admin-istration, commercial law, humanities, computer science, natural sciences and social sciences. Master’s programmes that are fully taught in English are offered within various fields of study. A wide range of single-subject courses is offered to Swedish and international students.

Studies at the faculty are characterised by in-depth subject knowledge, interdisci-plinary working methods, an international outlook and new ideas. Thematically-based research along with more disciplinary research pave the way for research areas and research themes that have strong social relevance. The Faculty of Arts and Sciences is unique in that the whole

teaching and scholarly effort is organised around issues central to the international community and modern society. This blend gives students and researchers a new perspective on academia as being both all-encompassing and specialised. Learning and interaction in education are central. Student initiative and participation in the educational process is encouraged. Some master’s programmes are offered as distance-learning programmes.

EDUCATIONAL SCIENCES. Teacher training is available for all levels of the Swedish school and pre-school system. Future edu-cators have considerable freedom of choice in subject specialisation and age group. Teacher training draws on a set of core courses in general education. These are designed to provide a common knowledge base and give insight into theories and methods of educational science, regardless of school level and subject specialisation. Course content incorporates sociology,

Attuned societyMost Swedes love to sing together… whether they are good at it or not!

pedagogics, psychology and philosophy. Trainee teachers come into contact with local schools from the very start.

Research training is offered within dif-ferent areas, such as Adult Learning, Peda-gogic Practices, Science and Technology Education. Educational research is closely linked to different school systems and pedagogical settings.

International outreach is strengthened through exchange programmes with teacher training colleges both in and out-side Europe.

The faculty offers master’s programmes taught in English both on campus and as distance learning.

HEALTH SCIENCES. Problem-based learning instead of learning by heart, early integra-tion of theory and practice, community orientation and health promotion are key concepts for the undergraduate study pro-grammes at the Faculty of Health Sciences. Integrated training of future doctors, nurs-es and caring science professionals gives a better understanding of each other’s professional roles. The faculty offers seven study programmes in medicine, medical biology and several health care professions.

Postgraduate research and scientific training are conducted within fifty health care disciplines in three multidisciplinary departments; the idea being to integrate the caring sciences with traditional bio-medical and clinical research disciplines. The University Hospital is a highly mod-ern hospital serving the entire southeast region of Sweden.

SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING. The Institute of Technology (LiTH) is one of Sweden’s major faculties of engineering and science. It has an international reputation for high-quality education that transcends borders. Nationwide polls of Swedish university graduates have consistently put LiTH in first place when it comes to key issues such as educational quality, student social life and preparation for professional life.

LiTH offers around 30 study pro-grammes, for both BSc and MSc, in en-gineering, biology, chemistry, computer science, physics and mathematics. In addi-tion, more than 20 master’s programmes taught in English are offered.

LiTH is one of the leading research insti-tutions in Sweden in the field of emerging technologies and science. Inter-disciplinary research is one of our hallmarks, but there is also strong single discipline research.

CampusesEducation and research are conducted at three main campuses in the cities of Linköping and Norrköping. The two cities are situated 200/160 kilometres south of Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, and are easily accessible by rail, road and air.• VallaCampus, aboutthreekilometres

from the city centre of Linköping, is where the majority of students and re-searchers study and work.

• TheUniversityHospitalCampus(USCampus) in Linköping houses the Fac-ulty of Health Sciences.

• NorrköpingCampusisacitycampuswhere about a quarter of the students are enrolled.

Academic systemHigher education in Sweden is divided into first, second and third cycle, accord-ing to the Bologna process. Degrees may be awarded after completing a study pro-gramme. Students can also study single-subject courses but these can not be combined to form a degree. The degrees awarded at LiU are:

First level:• UniversityDiploma,2years, 120highereducationcredits

• DegreeofBachelor,3years, 180highereducationcredits

Second level:• DegreeofMaster(TwoYears), 120highereducationcredits

• DegreeofMaster(OneYear), 60highereducationcredits

Several professional diplomas are award-ed as well.

Credits and gradingOneweekoffulltimestudiesataSwedishuniversity equals 1.5 higher education cred-its, which are identical to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System, ECTS.Onesemesterequals30creditsandone academic year equals 60 credits.

LiU uses several grading systems and grades are translated into ECTS when awarded.

As teaching stresses personal respon-sibility and individual performance, the grades received reflect not only the final examination score but also participation in the course.

Academic yearThe academic year consists of two semes-ters. The autumn semester usually runs from the middle or end of August to mid-January and the spring semester from mid-January to the beginning or middle of June. There is usually a teaching break of one or two weeks at Christmas.

Workload and instructionFull-time studies require at least 40 hours of work per week. Depending on the faculty, only one course is studied at a time or several courses are studied in parallel. Subjects may also be integrated into themes or blocks.

The extent and method of instruc-tion vary. Technical courses usually have a larger proportion of scheduled hours, while courses in the social sciences and arts contain fewer scheduled hours, al-lowing the students to devote most of their time to active self-instruction. There

are lectures with several hundred students present and smaller seminars where stu-dents are expected to play an active part in discussions and express their own views. Classes, with groups of 20–30 students, sometimes fewer, also allow for direct contact and scope for discussion with the teacher. Education is also conducted through laboratory work, excursions and independent project work.

Academic cultureThe Swedish academic environment may strike international students as being very informal. Teachers and staff members dress casually.

Language of instructionTeaching at Linköping University is usually conducted in Swedish, but all faculties offer a number of undergraduate and postgradu-ate courses with instruction in English or in a combination of Swedish and English. In most cases the literature, individual supervision and exams will be in English, while lectures are normally in Swedish. Tutorial groups may also be arranged in English if problem-based learning, PBL, is the educational method used (at the Faculty of Health Sciences, for example).

Students with special needsLinköping University offers support for stu-dents with special needs to make it possible for them to pursue studies under the same conditions as other students.

LiU is well suited to special needs stu-dents. There are lifts in all buildings and easy access to public conveniences, special-

ly adapted for special needs students.Students who apply for studies at LiU

Visas and Insurance

This information is aimed at all international students. Start preparing for your study period as soon as you have been accepted!

Residence permits and visasIf you are not a citizen of the Nordic coun-tries or the EU/EES area and are going to study for longer than three months, you must apply for a residence permit at the Swedish embassy/consulate in your home country. For a stay of less than three months, some foreign nationals must have visas in order to enter Sweden. A list of nationalities requiring visas is available on the Swedish Migration Board website, <www.migrationsverket.se>. To be sure of obtaining your permit in time, you must submit your application as soon as you have received your admission letter. Con-tact the Swedish embassy in your country to check what documentation is required with your application. The permit or visa must be entered in your passport before your arrival in Sweden.

Citizens of the EU/EES area need to register for the right of residence in

Sweden and citizens of Switzerland need to register for a residence permit if their study period is longer than three months. This needs to be done within three months of arriving in Sweden.

Information on residence permits, visas, etc., as well as forms and addresses can be found on the Swedish Migration Board website, <www.migrationsverket.se>, or you can contact the Swedish embassy or consulate in your home country. A useful website to find addresses, opening hours, etc., for Swedish embassies and consulates is <www.swedenabroad.com>.

FinancesTuition is free of charge for the 2010/11 academic year. The Swedish government has put forward a bill, which if passed into law will introduce fees for new students from outside the EU/EES who are not part of an exchange, as of the autumn semester 2011. Scholarships will be introduced at the same time, please see the Study in Sweden website for updates. Linköping University does not currently offer any scholarships or support for living expenses or travelling costs. Students will have to depend on per-sonal funds or financial support from their home countries to cover costs. The Swed-ish Institute and some other organisations offer a limited number of scholarships,

20

which you can read about online at <www.studyinsweden.se>.

Work and studyStudents from Nordic and EU/EEA coun-tries are permitted to work in Sweden throughout the academic year. Students from other countries may work in Sweden and do not require a work permit to do so, provided they are enrolled at the university and have obtained a residence permit. Check with the Swedish Migration Board, <www.migrationsverket.se>, for more in-formation.

However, full-time studies require 40 hours of work per week, making it very difficult to combine with part-time work. Please also bear in mind that opportunities for part-time work in Sweden are limited and that most jobs require knowledge of Swedish.

Health insuranceMake sure you have proper medical insur-ance before you leave your home country, and check carefully what it covers, whether or not you are eligible for special repatria-tion, etc.

If you come from an EU/EEA country,

you are entitled to use the public medical services on the same basis as Swedish citi-zens for urgent medical care. In order to be eligible, you must be registered at a social insurance office in your home country and have a valid European Health Insurance Card, which will be issued upon request by your national social security authority. If you do not have this card, e.g. for a doctor’s appointment, expect to pay around 1,700 SEK.

If you come from Australia, Algeria or Quebec in Canada, then there is a recipro-cal agreement for public medical benefits between Sweden and that country/area. Students need only to show their passport and a certificate from the social insur-ance office in their home country. For the reciprocal agreement to apply, the need for medical care must arise during, not prior to, the stay in Sweden.

If you intend to stay for more than one year in Sweden and have a residence per-mit for that period of time, you should reg-ister with the civil registration authorities atthelocalTaxOfficeBoard.Thisregistra-tion will entitle you to the same medical treatmentbenefitsasSwedishcitizens.YouneedtovisittheTaxOfficeinpersonandmusttakeyourpassportwithyou.Youwillbe given a personal identity number, per-sonnummer, made up of your date of birth plus four additional digits. Nature’s for everyoneThe old Swedish law Right of Public Access means that it is legal to visit somebody else’s land – although not their garden – to bathe in their lake, travel by boat on their river, and pick the wild flowers, mush-rooms, berries, fallen cones, acorns and nuts you find there! But it also means showing respect, for people and nature!

The campus cities and surroundings

Sweden is characterised by its long coastlines, large forests and numerous lakes. In the north, winters are long, cold and snowbound and summers are short. In the south, winters are considerably milder and summers longer. This large country has a small population of about 9 million, similar to Belgium, Ec-uador or New Jersey. Some 85 per cent of its inhabitants live in the southern half of Sweden, with the capital city of Stockholm being the major urban centre. Linköping and Norrköping are situated 200/160 km south of Stockholm, in the county ofÖstergötland.Youcanfindplentyofinformation about Sweden on the website <www.sweden.se>.

ÖstergötlandLinköping and Norrköping are situated in the county of Östergötland, the third larg-est county in Sweden in terms of arable land with 420,000 inhabitants. The region

offers not only some of Sweden’s most famous tourist attractions, such as Kol-mårdens Djurpark which is the largest zoo and safari park in the Nordic region, but is also one of Sweden’s most interesting counties from an historical point of view, with its ancient fortresses, rune stones and many prehistoric rock carvings. Some of the towns and villages have retained evi-dence of their medieval origins. Churches, castles and manors from the Middle Ages and later periods have also been well pre-served.

Several internationally well known companies, such as Saab, Ericsson, Sie-mens, Holmen Paper, BT Industries and Electrolux are based here. The two largest cities, Linköping and Norrköping, are in the process of developing into one integrat-ed urban region – Sweden’s fourth metro-politan area or the Twin Cities region.

For tourist information, visit the web-site <www.ostergotland.info>.

LinköpingWritten reference to Linköping was made as early as 1120 when the city was an im-portant religious centre. The construction of the cathedral began in 1230, and a cathe-dral school was established in 1250. Four centuries later, one of Sweden’s first pre-university schools was founded. Contem-porary Linköping continues this tradition

as a seat of learning through Linköping University, founded in the 1960’s.

Overthepastfiftyyears,Linköpinghasexpanded from a medium-sized town to become the fifth largest city in Sweden, with just over 140,000 inhabitants. It is home to industries specialising in many different sectors ranging from aircraft manufacturing to emerging technologies.

Despite its rapid growth, Linköping has retained a small-town charm. An excellent network of cycle paths makes it easy to get around. In the city centre you can go to for example theatre plays, concerts, museums or “spex”, the traditional student farces. Many Linköping inhabitants are proud fol-lowers of Linköping Hockey Club (LHC) or Linköping Fotboll Club (LFC). If you want to experience nature close to the city centre you can go hiking in the ancient oak land-scape of Tinnerö or follow the canal system to see the old locks and relax in their beau-tiful surroundings.

For more information, see the website <www.linkoping.se>.

NorrköpingNorrköping lies 40 kilometres to the north-east of Linköping where the river Motala Ström meets the Baltic Sea. Norrköping, with a population of 129,000 people, has a tradition as an industrial centre going back to the 17th century. In recent decades, it has adapted itself to suit the modern telecom-munications and computer technology markets.

Norrköping is a city steeped in history, clearly shown by more than 1,500 rock carvings at Himmelstalund. Some of these carvings are more than 3,000 years old.

The old industrial area on the water-front of Motala Ström in the heart of Nor-rköping was once famous for its cotton and paper mills. It has now been transformed into a modern area and, among other things, home to Campus Norrköping and to the student union building Trappan where students go to eat and socialise. The industrial buildings have been meticu-lously restored and are well worth a visit. The concert house is also situated in this area, part of the building is built inside one of the old paper mills.

Try the yellow tram when in Norr-köping, it is one of three tram systems in Sweden, in use since 1904.

The area around Norrköping is also of interest. Located within 50 kilometers are several castles, the archipelago and Kolmår-den, Sweden’s most famous zoo.

For more information, see the website <www.upplev.norrkoping.se>.

The thought countsIf you are invited to a Swede’s home then it is suggested that you take some kind of gift such as a bouquet of flowers or, a box of chocolates. If you are personally given a gift, then it is customary to open it upon receipt.
