Seagulls

My family goes to a beach in Florida every summer. We

enjoy going to the beach. I like swimming in the ocean, walking

on the beach, and playing in the sand. My favorite thing to do at

the beach is feed the seagulls.

Seagulls are pretty white birds with long legs. They are

interesting birds and live near the ocean. They are always flying

around the beach. They catch small fish in the ocean to eat.

They like to eat what the people on the beach feed them, too. I

usually take small pieces of bread with me in a bag. At the

beach we go to, the seagulls will fly right up to you and eat the

bread from your hand. They do not seem to be afraid of people.

The next time you visit the beach, take some bread with

you. I am sure you will enjoy spending time with the seagulls.

Light: The Color Spectrum

Did you know you can mix colors? If two people sing different songs at once, you hear a new sound. If you see two colors at once, you see a new color.

If you mix all the colors, you’ll see white. Sunlight has many waves at the same time. The waves are mixed, so our eyes can’t tell the colors apart. We see all these colors together as white.

You can “unmix” them with a prism. While white sunlight goes through a prism, it becomes a rainbow. The colors get “unmixed”! With a prism, we can see each color in the sun’s white light.

Look at the picture. This shows how a prism divides the colors into waves. See how the waves on top are wider than the waves on the bottom? Each different wave is a different color.

The main colors we see are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. Color the boxes. Aren’t rainbows pretty?

7. What do you need to take with you if you were going swimming at the beach?
