Linking renewable energy with community tourism in northern protected areas of the province of Pichincha

Creation of jobs; decreased energy con-sumption without affecting user comfort. A switch to clean energy will also reduce dependence on fossil fuels, which are more expensive and difficult to access in remote rural areas and are used mainly for small motorized boats and motorcycles.

The project aims at providing renewable energy to three new tourism installations run by community enterprises which are located in rural poor areas of the province of Pichincha; the idea is to strengthen the concept of eco-tourism by reducing carbon emissions in protected areas. At the same time the project would contribute to guaranteeing jobs of indegenous and peasant initiatives. This is identified as an innovative pilot project in the province’s environmental policy framework.

Apart from the reduction of carbon emissions in eco-tourism of protected areas, motivations for implementing the project come from the fact that in Ecuador solar energy is until now underused, despite high solar irradiation. Therefore, the project has been in-serted as a high priority within the political framework of provincial and municipal entities.
