Safe and Sound? Food - Protection, Security and Defence

Tuesday 20th November 2018

www.leafuk.org

As consumers we expect our food to be safe and readily available. We also believe our food is what it claims to be. However, the food supply chain is becoming increasingly complex and vulnerable to growing incidences of ‘food fraud’, ‘food crime’ and ‘misrepresentation’, such as through buying cheap food, unclear provenance or incorrect labelling.

The LEAF Annual Conference is a unique opportunity for farmers, those in the food chain, researchers and industry representatives, as well as government officials to discuss and learn from each other about the current state of food protection, security and defence in the UK and across the globe. The event is designed to raise the discussion around the risks of intentional and unintentional contamination and vulnerability.

Attendees will enjoy a variety of sessions, networking opportunities and informed discussion geared specifically at reducing the impact of food system vulnerability, attacks and catastrophic events on our food supply chains.

Introduction and WelcomeTom Heap, Environment and Rural Affairs Broadcaster Conference Chairman

Setting the ScenePhilip Wynn, LEAF ChairmanWe find ourselves in one of the most challenging times for the food and drink sector in recent history. Philip will set the scene for the day and identify some of the threats and vulnerabilities in our food and farming sector. He will examine the challenges around trade, integrity and transparency, explore the risks and set out how we can work together to encourage change, opportunity and innovation.

Building Our DefenceProfessor Guy Poppy, Chief Scientific Adviser, Food Standards AgencyProfessor Guy Poppy will highlight some of the science behind the threats to our food system, explaining what the Food Standards Agency are doing to protect our food.

Watching OutMinette Batters, President, National Farmers’ UnionConsumer trust in how food is produced is vital; incidences of food crime have far reaching impacts on the agricultural sector. However, the vulnerability of crops and livestock to pests and diseases, the authenticity of inputs and the demonstration of best practice all play their part. Minette will steer us through the opportunities for the farming sector to demonstrate its value and integrity.

Managing Risks and Ensuring QualityAndy Mitchell, Category Technical Manager, Sainsbury’sConsumer confidence can be lost overnight; managing risks and logistics, ensuring continuity of supply alongside food quality, authenticity and safety are an integral part of day to day management. What are the tricks of the trade that reduce the risks of this constant juggling?

Questions and Answers

Discussion: Building Confidence, Protection and Resilience How can we be confident that society trusts the safety of its food? Do we need a customised Food Defence Plan on farm or at a government level? Will our farmers and growers be vulnerable to international trade and bad practice? Will we have the finance and infrastructure in place to make it work? Will businesses be strengthened and rewarded in the market place for simply ‘getting it right’?
