Dressed in 1940’s-style wardrobe, the three sing like The Andrews Sisters with inspiring harmonies and perform classics such as ‘Mr. Sandman’, ‘In The Mood’ and ‘Jeepers Creepers’. What makes The Puppini Sisters truly stand out though are their show-stopping interpretations of more current tunes: Blondie’s ‘Heart of Glass’, Kate Bush’s ‘Wuthering Heights’ and The Smith’s ‘Panic’, among others. Who are The Puppini Sisters and are you sisters for real? The Puppini Sisters combine the bizarre talents of three unique individuals, Marcella Puppini, Kate Mullins and Stephanie O’Brien and we are most certainly, not related but true sisterhood doesn’t always have to be gene deep. A lot of time spent in each others company is needed to pull off three part vocal harmony convincingly and that has undoubtedly gone a long way to creating our own brand of Puppini sisterhood. How did you all meet and begin your music career? We all met whilst studying at Trinity College of Music in London. Universal Records were invited to the college to audition students to be signed and we were in the right place at the right time. The A and R man, the person responsible for discovering new recording artists, couldn’t stop laughing throughout our performance of Wuthering Heights, moves and all. To this day, I’m not entirely sure that was a good thing. How long have you been together? Six years this Christmas. Hallelujah! Describe your sound and why you chose it? Our style of music is known as three- part close harmony singing and we chose the sound because we all liked it. We were all already fans of the era of swing music, the golden age of Hollywood, Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Marilyn Monroe. The sound was brilliant and the look was brilliant. What more could you want? I was very impressed a few years ago with your version of Jingle Bells, so can you tell me why you decided on a whole album of Christmas songs? It seemed like the most logical thing for us to do. We love the Christmas songs of that era, so unashamedly kitsch and sentimental. You can get away with that at Christmas and it was a lot of fun to write, arrange and record. This UK-based vocal trio brings three- part harmony into the modern age with a repertoire that includes everything from ‘Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy’ to ‘I Will Survive’. ‘Puppini Sister’ Kate Mullins told Dawn Middleton more. The Puppini Sisters 26/11/2010 09:39 Holidays are coming! It especially has rich traditions in folk and classical music. Gyula Sogor worked for the government in The Netherlands at the end of the nineties when he first experienced Line dance in Condor City near The Hague. “After this I was working in Belgium where I became a member of the Footloose Dancers in Leuven. I liked the Western atmosphere of the club and meeting people who had the same interest as me.” When Gyula retired he came back to Hungary where there was no Line dance club at all at that time. “I felt that I must do something in my retirement. I wanted to create a similar club to that in Belgium where I had such a good time. So I did it at last in a small town near the capital city of Budapest.” “So, 20th August 2005 is the date when Line dance started in Hungary. From that time several similar clubs have been founded. Mainly by those of our club members who wanted to organise a Line dance club of their own.” Gyula now lives in a beautiful town called Pecs and every Friday travels three hours to Pomaz, picks up his granddaughter and takes part in Line dancing at Udvaros Csarda where his club, the Footloose Line Dance Club is situated. August 2005 is a very important date in Hungarian history. Thanks to Gyula Sogor that was the date when Line dance really began in Hungary. Gyula tells Dawn Middleton about the growth of Line dance in Hungary. 26/11/2010 10:53 Baby News On November 7th, Danish Line dancer and choreographer Benny Ray was blessed with a second daughter. James Wilson A brilliant dance, I love the music. The restart is very easy. There are some different steps in there. The 1/2 turn cross 1/2 turn caused a few problems but overall a definite hit. Denise Nicholls The cross 1/2 turns that swing one way and then the other are my favourite part of the dance. It’s fast but the steps aren’t too hard, so if you struggle to keep up, try taking smaller steps. David Spencer This took a couple of walkthroughs to master but well worth it. At the ripe age of 19, Katie does not hold back and has an inspiring combination of determination and passion that shines through. Dawn Middleton asked Katie a few questions about her rise to fame. 26/11/2010 11:17 www.linedancermagazine.com December 2010 • 69 Photo credit: Stephen Shepherd What inspired you to think about music for a career? Ever since I can remember, I always knew that being involved with music was what I wanted to do with my life. I grew up in Sugarland, Texas but when I was 14, I started to travel back and forth between Texas and Nashville to do my best and further my career. Then the juggling act began. At the same time I was going to High school and maintaining an ‘A’ average, I was listening to, writing, and rehearsing music. It was tough but it paid off. How did you discover country music? Through my parents! I remember the first CD I owned was a Brooks and Dunn album and I would dance around singing ‘Boot, Scoot and Boogie’. How did it all begin? I began singing when I was nine years old at fairs and festivals. My mom was a great support and would drive me around in her minivan all across Texas! Katie’s journey truly began about five years ago when she entered ‘Houston’s Best Country Singer’. The contest, which was held over an eight week period, had over 150 boys and girls aged nine to 17 in the Junior Division who were vying for the title. After several performances Katie rose to the top to grab the title of Houston’s Best Country Singer in her division with her rendition of Martina McBride’s ‘Whatever You Say’. Do you face any difficulties starting in the industry so young? There were definitely some preconceived notions as far as starting so young. I had to definitely try harder to make people believe that I was in this for all the right reasons and long term as well. I’m very lucky to have such an amazing label and support system. Who are your role models? My role models in country music would be Martina McBride, Patsy Cline, and Linda Ronstadt. How do you find inspiration? In many ways. Whether they are things that have happened in my life, my families or my friends’ lives. My inspiration can come in many different forms. It is so great that I can use these experiences in my songwriting. What, do you think, is your biggest achievement? Being named the ‘Highest Charting Independent Female in Country music’ is up there for me. Whew….that’s a long title! Katie’s latest album was released by Cold River Records on October 5th. In an effort to include the people that have helped make Katie one of the highest charting independent female artists in country music she decided to ask her fans for a very special favour. Can you explain why you asked the public to help in naming the title of your new album? I’ve been working on this album for so long, it was difficult for me to limit down the title for all that I had created. I teamed up with GAC TV so that my fans could help me pick the title. They ended up picking ‘Confessions Of A Nice Girl’ and I’m so happy that they did! I think it’s the best representation for the album. This album is, I think, jam packed with Line dance opportunities. How will you feel seeing hundreds Line dance to your tunes? I would love to see people Line dance to my music! Maybe they would give me some Line dancing pointers. Haha! Are you planning to visit the UK and Europe in the future? I don’t have a set date right now but I would love to in the future. What are your dreams for the future? One of the biggest goals for me would be to win ‘Female Vocalist Of The Year’. This is something I haven’t accomplished yet but I am working towards this whilst having fun and enjoying what I do. Katie Armiger has just scratched the surface of what she is capable of. She is a passionate and driven performer well beyond her years. From the moment you hear her it will come as no surprise that this Sugar Land, Texas native is poised to take her place in country music for years to come. 26/11/2010 11:17 thecharts This month’s DJ Playlist is courtesy of DJ Bernard of Berntres Line Dancers DJ Playlist Club Charts 1 Rhyme Or Reason Rachael McEnaney It Happens Sugarland 2 The Lemon Tree Kim Ray Lemon Tree Fool’s Garden 3 Tennessee Waltz SurpriseAndy Chumbley Tennessee Waltz Ireen Sheer 4 Quarter After One Levi J. Among the headlines in

Grapevine were that Alan

Jackson released his new album,

When Somebody Loves You.

The album is a blend of tradition

and contemporary melodies –

Country star, Jimmie Davis, died

in his sleep at the age of 101.

He wrote, You Are My Sunshine

– LeAnn Rimes makes her acting

debut in the new film Coyote Ugly – The Haleys have

been nominated for the Best Dance Group Of The Year

in Linedancer’s Crystal Boot Awards.

Linedancer speaks exclusively to Jo Thompson and

found out more about one of Line dancing’s greatest

talents. As her UK tour finishes she still has a full

Billy Ray Cyrus has become one of the most important

and influential Country music stars. His new album,

Southern Rain, sees the artist at his most creative.

stardom.

Latin rhythms are of increasing interest to some within

the Line dancing community and Gloria Estefan has

helped bring the Latin sound of salsa to Line dancing.

Gloria has released a high-energy dance album that

has a connection to Line dance.

Page 31Linedancer reveals the latest on singer/songwriter, Sara

Evans, who has just completed her third album, Born

To Fly. Her debut album in 1997 wound up on music

critics ‘best of’ lists for the year.

Lonestar are undoubtedly one of the hottest Country

bands on the circuit and they recently touched down

in London. They played to a full house and Linedancer

The ‘Sisters’ are Marcella Puppini,

Stephanie O’Brien and Kate Mullins.

Dressed in 1940’s-style wardrobe, the

three sing like The Andrews Sisters

with inspiring harmonies and perform

classics such as ‘Mr. Sandman’, ‘In The

Mood’ and ‘Jeepers Creepers’. What

makes The Puppini Sisters truly stand

out though are their show-stopping

interpretations of more current tunes:

Blondie’s ‘Heart of Glass’, Kate Bush’s

‘Wuthering Heights’ and The Smith’s

‘Panic’, among others.

Who are The Puppini Sisters and are

you sisters for real?

The Puppini Sisters combine the bizarre

talents of three unique individuals,

Marcella Puppini, Kate Mullins and

Stephanie O’Brien and we are most

certainly, not related but true sisterhood

doesn’t always have to be gene deep. A

lot of time spent in each others company

is needed to pull off three part vocal

harmony convincingly and that has

undoubtedly gone a long way to creating

our own brand of Puppini sisterhood.

How did you all meet and begin your

music career?

We all met whilst studying at Trinity

College of Music in London. Universal

Records were invited to the college to

audition students to be signed and we

were in the right place at the right time.

The A and R man, the person responsible

for discovering new recording artists,

couldn’t stop laughing throughout our

performance of Wuthering Heights,

moves and all. To this day, I’m not

entirely sure that was a good thing.

How long have you been together?

Six years this Christmas. Hallelujah!

Describe your sound and why you

chose it?

Our style of music is known as three-

part close harmony singing and we

chose the sound because we all liked

it. We were all already fans of the era

of swing music, the golden age of

Hollywood, Joan Crawford, Bette Davis,

Marilyn Monroe. The sound was brilliant

and the look was brilliant. What more

could you want?

I was very impressed a few years ago

with your version of Jingle Bells, so

can you tell me why you decided on a

whole album of Christmas songs?

It seemed like the most logical thing for

us to do. We love the Christmas songs

of that era, so unashamedly kitsch and

sentimental. You can get away with that

at Christmas and it was a lot of fun to

write, arrange and record.

This UK-based vocal

trio brings three-

part harmony into

the modern age

with a repertoire that

includes everything

from ‘Boogie Woogie

Bugle Boy’ to ‘I Will

Survive’.

‘Puppini Sister’ Kate Mullins

told Dawn Middleton more.

Baby NewsOn November 7th, Danish Line dancer

and choreographer Benny Ray was

blessed with a second daughter. At birth

she weighed 3980g (8.7 lb) and was 53

centimetres long. Proud parents, Benny

and Lykke told us: “Mum is doing fine and

big sister Lea, who is now four years old, is

very proud. The name of the new baby has

not been decided yet.”

Here’s To The

Happy Couple

Sandy Keys and her Line dance friends

would like to congratulate Tom and Sue

on their marriage. “Please give them our

very best wishes. Tom and Sue attend

The Oakland Mavericks run by Nick and

Alison on the Wirral. I previously wrote to

you about Sue winning the last prize at our

Christmas raffle last year and the prize was

an engagement ring from Tom. They are a

lovely couple and it is a joy to see the fun

they have when they are Line dancing. We

had a wonderful evening of Line dance to

celebrate their marriage in October. Good

dancing, good food and good company

what more do you need. Please give them

our thanks.”

Home From HomeEarlier this year Craig Bennett held an

all day charity event at the Alford Sports

& Social Club in Warrington, Cheshire in

aid of Ronald McDonald House charity

which aims to provide free

‘home away from home’

accommodation at hospitals

across the UK, enabling

families to stay close to their

child and maintain a degree of

normal family life. With the help

of Dee Musk, Shaz Walton,

Pat Stott, Alan Birchall, Kim

Ray, DJ’S Dave Baycroft and

Andrew Palmer they managed

to raise a fantastic £2,300. All

the choreographers and DJ’s gave their

time and effort for free which meant more

money for the charity and the raffle prizes

were donated by Derek Birley.

A landlocked country in Central Europe,

Hungary is divided by the River Danube

and is home to a large number of spa

towns and hot springs. It especially has

rich traditions in folk and classical music.

Gyula Sogor worked for the government

in The Netherlands at the end of the

nineties when he fi rst experienced Line

dance in Condor City near The Hague.

“After this I was working in Belgium

where I became a member of the

Footloose Dancers in Leuven. I liked

the Western atmosphere of the club

and meeting people who had the same

interest as me.”

When Gyula retired he came back to

Hungary where there was no Line dance

club at all at that time. “I felt that I must

do something in my retirement. I wanted

to create a similar club to that in Belgium

where I had such a good time. So I did

“So, 20th August 2005 is the date when

Line dance started in Hungary. From

that time several similar clubs have been

founded. Mainly by those of our club

members who wanted to organise a Line

dance club of their own.”

Gyula now lives in a beautiful town

called Pecs and every Friday travels

three hours to Pomaz, picks up his

granddaughter and takes part in Line

dancing at Udvaros Csarda where his

club, the Footloose Line Dance Club is

situated.

August 2005 is a very

important date in

Hungarian history.

Thanks to Gyula Sogor

that was the date when

Line dance really began in

Hungary.

Gyula tells Dawn Middleton

about the growth of Line

dance in Hungary.

Baby NewsOn November 7th, Danish Line dancer

and choreographer Benny Ray was

blessed with a second daughter. At birth

she weighed 3980g (8.7 lb) and was 53

centimetres long. Proud parents, Benny

Here’s To The

Happy Couple

Sandy Keys and her Line dance friends

would like to congratulate Tom and Sue

on their marriage. “Please give them our

very best wishes. Tom and Sue attend

The Oakland Mavericks run by Nick and

Alison on the Wirral. I previously wrote to

you about Sue winning the last prize at our

Christmas raffle last year and the prize was

an engagement ring from Tom. They are a

lovely couple and it is a joy to see the fun

they have when they are Line dancing. We

had a wonderful evening of Line dance to

celebrate their marriage in October. Good

dancing, good food and good company

what more do you need. Please give them

our thanks.”

Home From HomeEarlier this year Craig Bennett held an

all day charity event at the Alford Sports

& Social Club in Warrington, Cheshire in

aid of Ronald McDonald House charity

which aims to provide free

‘home away from home’

accommodation at hospitals

across the UK, enabling

families to stay close to their

child and maintain a degree of

normal family life. With the help

of Dee Musk, Shaz Walton,

Pat Stott, Alan Birchall, Kim

Ray, DJ’S Dave Baycroft and

Andrew Palmer they managed

to raise a fantastic £2,300. All

the choreographers and DJ’s gave their

time and effort for free which meant more

money for the charity and the raffle prizes

were donated by Derek Birley.

Welcome to the most

comprehensive and refl ective

dance chart published.

To ensure this chart is meaningful,

independent and accurate we rely entirely

on charts supplied by dancers.

Send us your ten favourite dances in

order of preference. It does not matter

how old the dance is or to what track of

music you dance it to.

Providing you include your membership

number, name and address for

verifi cation, your chart is entered into a

database where, along with all the others,

it is sorted, ranked and fi nally counted.

The computer produces the results.

Nothing is left out, nothing is edited.

A great dance, a bit of a work out

but I thoroughly enjoy it.

James Wilson

A brilliant dance, I love the music.

The restart is very easy. There are

some different steps in there. The

1/2 turn cross 1/2 turn caused a few

problems but overall a definite hit.

Denise Nicholls

The cross 1/2 turns that swing one

way and then the other are my

favourite part of the dance. It’s fast

but the steps aren’t too hard, so if

you struggle to keep up, try taking

smaller steps.

David Spencer

This took a couple of walkthroughs

to master but well worth it. A great

feeling of satisfaction for dancers of

this level when you ‘have it’! The

step patterns challenge you and it

is written to a great track.

What inspired you to think about

music for a career?

Ever since I can remember, I always

knew that being involved with music was

what I wanted to do with my life. I grew up

in Sugarland, Texas but when I was 14, I

started to travel back and forth between

Texas and Nashville to do my best and

further my career. Then the juggling act

began. At the same time I was going

to High school and maintaining an

‘A’ average, I was listening to, writing,

and rehearsing music. It was tough but

it paid off.

How did you discover country music?

Through my parents! I remember the

fi rst CD I owned was a Brooks and Dunn

album and I would dance around singing

‘Boot, Scoot and Boogie’.

How did it all begin?

I began singing when I was nine years

old at fairs and festivals. My mom was a

great support and would drive me around

in her minivan all across Texas!

Katie’s journey truly began about

fi ve years ago when she entered

‘Houston’s Best Country Singer’. The

contest, which was held over an eight

week period, had over 150 boys and

girls aged nine to 17 in the Junior

Division who were vying for the title.

After several performances Katie rose

to the top to grab the title of Houston’s

Best Country Singer in her division

with her rendition of Martina McBride’s

‘Whatever You Say’.

Do you face any diffi culties starting in

the industry so young?

There were defi nitely some preconceived

notions as far as starting so young. I had

to defi nitely try harder to make people

believe that I was in this for all the right

reasons and long term as well. I’m very

lucky to have such an amazing label and

support system.

Who are your role models?

My role models in country music would

be Martina McBride, Patsy Cline, and

Linda Ronstadt.

How do you fi nd inspiration?

In many ways. Whether they are things

that have happened in my life, my families

or my friends’ lives. My inspiration can

come in many different forms. It is so

great that I can use these experiences in

my songwriting.

What, do you think, is your biggest

achievement?

Being named the ‘Highest Charting

Independent Female in Country music’

is up there for me. Whew….that’s a

long title!

Katie’s latest album was released by

Cold River Records on October 5th.

In an effort to include the people that

have helped make Katie one of the

highest charting independent female

artists in country music she decided to

ask her fans for a very special favour.

Can you explain why you asked the

public to help in naming the title of

your new album?

I’ve been working on this album for so

long, it was diffi cult for me to limit down

the title for all that I had created. I teamed

up with GAC TV so that my fans could

help me pick the title. They ended up

picking ‘Confessions Of A Nice Girl’ and

I’m so happy that they did! I think it’s the

best representation for the album.

This album is, I think, jam packed

with Line dance opportunities. How will

you feel seeing hundreds Line dance

to your tunes?

I would love to see people Line dance

to my music! Maybe they would give me

some Line dancing pointers. Haha!

Are you planning to visit the UK and

Europe in the future?

I don’t have a set date right now but I

would love to in the future.

What are your dreams for the future?

One of the biggest goals for me would

be to win ‘Female Vocalist Of The Year’.

This is something I haven’t accomplished

yet but I am working towards this whilst

having fun and enjoying what I do.

Katie Armiger has just scratched the

surface of what she is capable of. She

is a passionate and driven performer

well beyond her years. From the

moment you hear her it will come as

no surprise that this Sugar Land, Texas

native is poised to take her place in

country music for years to come.
