Let us be done with fault-finding, and leave off self-seeking. May we put away all pretense, and meet each other face-to-face, without self- pity and without prejudice. May we never be hasty in judgment, and always generous. Let us take time for all things; make us to grow calm, serene, gentle. Teach us to put into action our better impulses, straight-forward and un- afraid. Grant that we may realize it is the little things that create differences, that in the big things of life we are at one. And may we strive to touch and to know the great, common human heart of us all and, O Lord God, let us forget not to be kind! Looking forward to the very best in 2014! Happy New Year Greater Muskegon Woman's Club Members!

It's the time of year for resolutions. The experts say to put your goals in writing and to acknowledge them daily. My resolution is to read the "Collect for Club Women" every morning and to do my very best to put it in to ac-tion. With this commitment, I hope "to become a better version of me" this coming year. Take a moment and reflect on the Collect, we are so blessed to have this as our guide:

A COLLECT FOR CLUBWOMEN By Mary Stewart, 1904 Keep us, oh God, from pettiness; let us be large in thought, in word, in deed. Let us be done with fault-finding, and leave off self-seeking. May we put away all pretense, and meet each other face-to-face, without self-pity and without prejudice. May we never be hasty in judgment, and always generous. Let us take time for all things; make us to grow calm, serene, gentle. Teach us to put into action our better impulses, straight-forward and un-afraid. Grant that we may realize it is the little things that create differences, that in the big things of life we are at one. And may we strive to touch and to know the great, common human heart of us all and, O Lord God, let us forget not to be kind! Looking forward to the very best in 2014! Thank you to everyone who gave a gift or a monetary donation for the residents of the Lake Woods Nursing Center. The nurses and aides were very grateful for everything. It was my understanding that no one had ever done anything like this before. Thank you so very much.

January Office Hours You will be able to access the club during the following times: January 8 10:00-2:30PM 15 12N--2PM 16 5-8PM

Miscellaneous Manners Grinning at Nothing Don’t have the habit of smiling or “grinning” at nothing. Smile or

laugh when there is occasion to do either, but at other times keep your mouth shut and your man-ner composed. (1884)

Over Familiarity Don’t be over-familiar. Don’t strike your friends on the back, nudge them in the side, or give other physical manifestations of your pleasure. Don’t indulge in these fa-miliarities nor submit to them by others. (1884)

Eating a Banana The skin should be cut off with a knife, peeling the top down, while holding in the hand. Small pieces should be cut or broken off, and taken in the fingers, or they may be cut up and eaten with a fork. (1904)

Treatment of Inferiors Never affect superiority. If you chance to be in the company of an infe-rior, do not let him feel his inferiority. When you invite an inferior as your guest, treat him with all the politeness and consideration you would show an equal. (1893)

Too Nice Be careful not to be over-nice, or you will impress people with the idea that your life began in vulgarity, and you are now trying so hard to get away from it, that you rush to the opposite extreme. (1860)

The Country Bumpkin A country bumpkin seizes your hand with as much violence as though he were catching a pig, and if he does not break your fingers it is a mercy. The fop languidly gives you his hand, and you may shake it if you will, but it cannot be said that he grasps yours. (1860)

The Nursery of Crime Idleness is the nursery of crime. It is that prolific germ of which all rank and poisonous vices are the fruits. It is the source of temptation. (1894)

Timeless It is not considered fashionable to carry a watch. What has a fashion-able man to do with time? Besides, he never goes into those obscure parts of the town where there are no public clocks, and his servant will tell him when it is time to dress for dinner. (1836)

Avoid the Horse-Laugh Immoderate laughter is exceedingly unbecoming in a lady; she may affect the dimple or the smile, but should carefully avoid any approximation to a horselaugh. (1860)

LIFESTYLES Nancy Bierenga, chair

The Holiday dinner on Thursday, December 19, was held at the Lake House. Thir-teen women attended and exchanged gifts. We had a great time together! January 11 between 9:30 and 11:30 AM we will be decorating the club for winter if it wasn't finished during Club Pride Day. If you are planning to help, please let me know by email so I can email you after we see how much is done on the 8th.

Next Gotta Get-Away on April 26 We’ll leave the old K-Mart Plaza on Henry St. at 8am, and

return there about 8pm. In between we’ll tour the Chocolate Factory, visit Notre Dame, have lunch at a castle, and have

dinner at Salt of the Earth in Fennville. In between if time al-lows, we’ll stop at the South Bend branch of the Wakarusa

Drug Store where they make and sell the world’s largest jelly beans! Cost and further details announced as time approaches.

Dance the Night Away is going to be a great event that you won’t want to miss. Please come and join the fun!! Singles, couples, all are welcome. The music will be great and you can dance away those holiday desserts. The line dance lessons will be super easy and require no experience. Whether you are on the floor to dance, or watching and visiting, I guarantee that you will have a wonderful time. Mark your calendar for January 17th and be a part of the party!

See you there.
