Principal’s Report

‘Clean Up Australia Day’ - a spectacular result!

What a difference a day makes! The rain held off and the workers

came pouring in to clean and green our school. Gardens were

weeded, hedges trimmed, areas were mulched, trees were pruned,

rubbish was collected and lost property sorted. Many thanks to all the

boys and girls and mums and dads who gave up some of their

Sunday to beautify our school. It looks stunning! Special thanks go to

the LEAF Coordinators Sarah Burnett and Sandra Napoli and to

Robyn Scott (Relieving Deputy Principal) for leading the way for this

event. Thanks also to the many staff members who kept the troops

fed with sausage sandwiches from the BBQ. More photos will be

displayed on one of our noticeboards soon.

Harmony Day - ‘Everyone Belongs!’

On 21 March, everyone is invited to wear a splash of orange to celebrate Harmony Day. This is a day to

acknowledge and take pride in our similarities and differences – we celebrate the inclusiveness of our

school especially our multicultural diversity. Students will take part in a number of activities to raise

awareness of the theme, ‘Strength in Harmony’. There is also a poster competition to enter with details in

this week’s Lines.

Zone Swimming Carnival Success!

Despite the rain, our Zone swimmers shone at the Zone Swimming Carnival yesterday. Many swam

personal bests and reached the finals or were placed in stroke events. Three records were broken by

LPS students – Chloe K broke the long-standing 12/13 years breaststroke record, the Senior girls relay

team of Ellie, Miki, Freya and Chloe broke the record and Ellie B broke the 11 years girls backstroke

record.. Mr Elsley and Mrs Batistich acted as officials on the day and Oleg managed the team – thanks

for your efforts! Congratulations to all competitors for aspiring to do your best and displaying wonderful

sportsmanship on the day. A full report will be published in next week’s Lindfield Lines. I would like to

thank Debbie in the canteen who catered for this event.

Bullying – No Way! National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence

On Friday 17 March, our school will join thousands of other schools to take a stand against bullying and

violence. Students will participate in anti-bullying lessons and learn strategies that promote positive

relationships. This builds upon our recent incursion ‘Sticks and Stones’ which explored ways to deal with

aggressive behaviour and resolve conflict peacefully. Themes included empathy, eSafety and

cooperation.

Happy and Safe Playgrounds

Year 5 mentors farewelled their Kindergarten friends last week, following the culmination of the highly successful Playmates Program. Mentors thoroughly embraced the opportunity to teach appropriate ways to play, how to take turns and share. We are very proud of their displayed sense of responsibility, organisation and respect. Kindergarten students have subsequently begun exploring additional playground spaces, both at morning tea and lunch. They are enjoying opportunities to interact with students in Years 1 and 2. To continue supporting our Kindergarten students, Year 6 volunteers are providing valuable guidance to K-2 students in their new role as P.A.L.S. (Playground Activity Leaders in Schools).

Clearly identified by their colourful vests, P.A.L.S. are reinforcing school expectations, resolving conflict and engaging with enthusiasm. We are grateful for their mature commitment to creating happy and safe playgrounds, for all students.

Drip, Drip, Drip

Please help us to keep your children dry in wet weather by storing a raincoat in the bottom of their school bag. Students are required to move around the school from time to time to attend specialist classes and are encouraged to wear protection. Raincoats are preferable to umbrellas, for reasons of safety.

Ethics Teachers

Additional Ethics teachers are urgently required. Students, who are enrolled in classes where there is no available teacher, are currently engaged in a Non-Scripture Program. Ethics teachers need to:

be comfortable working with, and be able to engage, with children

have an interest in helping children think about ethics using the Primary Ethics curriculum

have an open-minded, inquiring outlook

have excellent communication skills, and

be available to teach a class on Tuesday mornings at 10:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Training is provided. For more information about the role please go to https://primaryethics.com.au/ If you would like to join the LPS Ethics team, please contact Apple Huang, LPS Ethics Coordinator, on [email protected] or mobile 0452 190 388.

High School

The High School Enrolment Form for entry into Year 7 2018 has been sent home today. This guide contains a wealth of information surrounding the transition to secondary school and the Expression of Interest Form. Please complete the form carefully and return it to your child’s class teacher NO LATER THAN FRIDAY 17 MARCH 2017. This allows us time to process the forms before forwarding them on to the high schools. If any details on the form are incorrect, then please contact Miss Mustaca immediately.

Selective High School

The test for entry into Selective High School in 2018 will take place on Thursday 9 March. Parents / Carers should have already received information in regards to the test location and times.

Young Leaders Day

On Friday, Mrs Sian and Miss Mustaca braved the rainy weather to accompany our Year 6 student leaders to ‘National Young Leaders Day’, which was held at the International Convention Centre. 4500 students took part in the day. The message of the day was ‘IMAGINATION – Together We Can’ and we heard from some inspirational speakers. Some of our leaders have shared what they felt resonated with them: “The most inspiring part of the day was when Sam Webb showed us how ‘I’m fine’ can turn into ‘help me’ when turned upside down”. - Claire B. “Jade Hamiester talked about being brave…not perfect!” - Lauren C. “The day has inspired me to be a better leader” – Will C. “I thought the speakers were brilliant and their speeches were inspirational about collaboration and bravery” – Amy W. “Dr Jordan Nguyen was my favourite speaker” – Jeremy S. “Jade taught me to always follow your dreams and to not let irrational fear get the best of you” – Victoria P. “My favourite part of the day was when we did the thunderstorm choir. We first started by rubbing our hands, clicking our fingers, then we slapped our knees. We did this as a Mexican wave with over 4000 people!” – Max F. “I’m inspired to do charity work” – Bianca H. “All the speakers had different messages and have inspired me to help the needy” – Freya C.

Coloured Strings Mufti Day

Today the LPS Strings Committee promoted the Coloured Strings Mufti Day. Children came to school wearing green, red, blue or yellow shirts for a gold coin donation to support the strings program. We thank you for your support with this.

The School Photographer Class Photos

All class photographs will be taken on Thursday, 23 March. A note and individual envelopes will be handed out this week. You may pay with cash or complete an online paymen. If ordering online you will come to the screen shown here via ‘The School Photographer’ website: www.theschoolphotographer.com.au. Please ensure that an individual envelope is completed for each child and returned to your child’s class teacher. Full summer school uniform will be worn on photo day. If you would like to order family photos, please obtain a separate family photo envelope from the office and return it to Miss Mustaca. These photos will be taken during lunch time on the same day.

Interrelate

The ‘Interrelate Family Program’ will be held in the school hall on Wednesday, 29 March 2017 as follows: Session 1: 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm ‘Where Did I Come From?’ Session 2: 7:15 pm – 8:15 pm is called ‘Preparing for Puberty’. This is a valuable program and we encourage you to attend. Students will be given attendance and payment notes this week which will also be available on the school website.

Anaphylaxis at Lindfield Public School

At Lindfield Public School in 2017, we have a small number of children with a potentially life threatening allergic reaction. They are found across our school from Kindergarten to Year 6. How can parents help these children?

If possible, choose alternative sandwich spreads to peanut butter and Nutella. If you have no alternative, inform your child that these foods can trigger an anaphylactic reaction.

Reinforce the school’s NO FOOD SHARING message.

THANK YOU TO ALL THE FAMILIES WHO

CAME TO OUR CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY

The LPS families and staff showed us what can be

achieved when we come together as a community.

Carrying gloves, tools and rubbish bags, a steady

stream of people signed in early Sunday morning to

pick up rubbish, perform general and some very

heavy-duty gardening, clearing and cleaning. Some

came for a couple of hours, some came for the

whole day, but everyone came with an incredible

amount of energy. Not a minute was wasted, and the results speak for themselves.

A special thanks to our LEAF convenors Sarah Burnett and Sandra Napoli who are both forces of nature.

Thanks also go to Relieving Deputy Principal, Robyn Scott for her tireless efforts. Without these wonderful

ladies these working bees would not happen and their enthusiasm and passion for keeping our school

beautiful cannot be underestimated. Thanks Ladies!.

INVITATION TO ALL PARENTS AND CARERS - P&C AGM/GENERAL MEETING

The P&C’s Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday 16 March

ay 7.30pm in the staff room. All parents and carers are invited to

attend. Please see the agenda attached.

At the AGM, the 2016 Annual Reports will be presented, and office-

bearer and sub-committee representatives will be elected. We

welcome nominations for all positions. Taking an active role in the

P&C is very rewarding. It is also a great way to get to know other

parents and a good opportunity to learn more about the school. It is vital that these volunteer roles are

filled.

Our first General Meeting for the year will immediately follow the AGM. For those of you who are new

parents to our school, we would like to welcome you to attend P&C meetings, not only so that we can hear

from you, but also so that you can learn more about the school and its positive attitudes towards students

and their families. Our P&C meetings are relaxed and we welcome discussion on issues. It is through our

active P&C that we are able to work with the Principal, teachers and staff to create a positive school

environment and to create policies which reflect the attitudes and values of the entire school community.

Here is a description of some of the roles with no nominees to date: 2017 P&C SUB-COMMITTEES:

LEAF Co-Convenor

The LEAF Committee organises our two main LEAF events - Clean Up Australia Day and the National Tree

Planting Day. These initiatives are great school community events where volunteers get involved in helping

keep our school clean and green.

Social Committee Convenors

The Social & Fundraising Committee organises events throughout the school year. Whilst some of these

events encompass a fundraising component, all of them are planned to foster social relationships for

parents and children to flourish and to provide them with the opportunity to feel connected to their school

community. Whilst each event throughout the year is delegated to a specific Class or School Year group,

this Sub-Committee oversees each event. This is a great Sub-Committee to be a part of if you want to get

to know your school community and if you enjoy a sense of pride and success knowing you have given

something positive back to your children and the school.

If you are interested in nominating yourself for any of these positions, please email me at

[email protected].

Enjoy your week!

Chess

Chess Club has settled in really well and we seem to be moving along as smoothly as possible.

Our youngest group (Yellow) is overflowing with kids so we will be looking for promotions soon to relieve the pressure (and noise).

Green Group have scored a great coach this year, who has already ranked the kids both by ability and behaviour and provided a Venn diagram. Steady on fellow - we have a whole year to go yet!

Next up, we will be preparing for ‘Tournament Season’ next term and looking forward to 'welcoming' the other schools to our cauldron of noise.

A reminder to all parents that Fees are now due and Natalia will be following up, in the near future. Eric Tse - Chess Coordinator [email protected]

Strings

Thank you to everyone for contributing to our “Coloured Strings” Day. All money raised

will go towards purchasing music for the strings program so that we can perform some

awesome music for you all.

Dates for Term 1:

o March 13: Bach/Vivaldi: Killara High School Combined Strings Workshop and Concert. Please return your permission slips to Miss Mustaca this week.

A plea for positions:

CO-CONVENOR:

This is the last year for many of the strings parents, including Marianne and I as co-convenors. We are

looking for people to take over this role and continue to develop our program. You don’t need to be

musical at all! Just a friendly smile and a willingness to do some administration is all you require. I am

more than happy to take you through the process and have you shadow me this year. Please let us

know if you are interested.

TREASURER:

This person will ensure that our funds are all correct for the overall P&C. Occasionally you may need to

bank some money. You will need to approve of any spending requests then send it on to the P&C

accountants. A budget has already been done and this can be used asa guide for coming years.

MUSIC SPECTACULAR COORDINATOR:

Music Spectacular is a combined band/strings musical celebration usually held on a Friday night in mid-

November at Killara High School. A band coordinator will assist in this role and work together to make a

wonderful night of music. It will involve liaising with the conductors to put together the program, liaising

with band reps, and stage management on the night.

Please ask us if you would like any more information and remember that we all work and manage to fit

these roles in so that we can give back to our school community and to our children.

Band

Desperately seeking volunteers!

The Lindfield Band Program is entirely volunteer run and we need your help so that our children can

continue to benefit from participating in a top quality band program.

We are still looking for volunteers to step up to help with Music Camp and Music Spectacular.

You do not have to be present for the whole of Music Camp, so please don’t let that put you off

getting in touch to find out more.

Without your help, these events just won’t happen – and that would make us, and our children,

very sad! So please get in touch.
