Editor: Stacey Thomas
I am the publisher for all The Works magazines and I am now looking to submit some interesting articles, which I hope, will complement our already popular magazine.
I live in Gloucester with my baby daughter, husband and cocker spaniel. I enjoy walking, gardening and anything that makes me laugh!
For future issues I will be looking for local topics, your opinions (good or bad!), stories & people of interest so any suggestions would be most welcomed - please email [email protected].
As a community magazine we are always trying to extend our links with local businesses and believe that our low budget advertising offers could be the answer to promoting your business during the current “credit crunch” climate.

DAVE’S TOP TIPS
How to cure an air lock
If no water, or a spluttering supply, comes out of the hot tap when its opened, the likely cause is an air lock. If you have an automatic washing machine, and have both the hot and cold supplies connected, an effective remedy can be implemented quite easily.
The cold water to at least one of the downstairs taps will be connected directly to the mains (this is generally the kitchen sink tap). The washing machine will be connected to this run of cold pipe as it needs mains pressure to work properly. The mains pressure of the cold water is much greater than that of the hot water and we can use this greater pressure to push any air locks back to the hot water storage tank.
Disconnect the cold water hose from the back of the washing machine (Turn the valve off first). Disconnect the hot water hose from the valve on the hot water pipe. (Turn this valve off first also). Now connect the free end of the cold hose, to the free, hot valve. Turn on the hot water valve and then the cold water valve. This will now allow the greater pressure of the cold water to push any air back up the hot water pipe.
Leave both valves open for approximately 30 seconds and then close, cold first. Now check the flow from the hot tap at the kitchen sink and the air should have been dispelled.
Regards
Dave Stevens.

Business Club launch deemed a great success The launch of the Gloucester Rugby Business Club at Gloucester Rugby's match against Saracens has been declared a great success, with guests enjoying a tense and hard fought, full blooded encounter between two of the Aviva Premiership's top sides. The event was enjoyed by all those who attended, new relationships were forged and everyone enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere in the hospitality suite. Local Busines Focus When you’re coaching young people in the art of being successful, there are two types of experience which are equally rewarding. The first is running a training course for “gifted and talented” students or grammar school 6th formers; and getting an e-mail from the school to tell you that, since your training course, the school has broken its previous record for Oxbridge entries. The second is working with teenagers from disadvantaged backgrounds and seeing lads gain 5+ G.C.S.E.s at grade C or above, who, previously, were predicted to be permanently excluded. It’s a great feeling to see “no hopers” progress to 6th form or gain an apprenticeship and know you had a hand in that achievement. Scarcely less rewarding is training talented, but often nervous youngsters, in how to deliver a professional presentation to a group of senior company executives. The looks on their faces is a picture when they receive really enthusiastic praise for their performances.
This is me (3rd left in both pictures) with a group of winners from Worcester. I don’t care what you’ve heard about the education system, there are some truly visionary schools in both the public and private sector that, in spite of the economic situation, are prepared to work in long term partnership with outside consultants to give their students an edge when they hit the job market. All my partner schools have also agreed to encourage students to keep me on as their mentor beyond the time spent at the school. This is terribly important because, no matter how good the coach and no matter how motivated the students, it’s unrealistic to expect them to remember everything they learned when they face a job interview, which may take place several years after they were trained. A coach should never abandon a student. A coach who believes that his training really works should be willing to mentor a student right up to the time that student lands his/her first salaried job.

Gloucester Guildhall is as culturally diverse a venue as any city could wish for…
Working tirelessly to bring the biggest names in music and comedy to
Gloucester, the Guildhall has seen the likes of Lily Allen, White Lies and
Echo & the Bunnymen grace the stage in recent years, with exciting
shows from Kate Nash, Funeral For A Friend and The Feeling coming up
over the next couple of months. The music is loud, the crowd euphoric
– Guildhall gigs are legendary.
But maybe you like your entertainment a
little less energetic and a lot more hilarious.
We’ve seen top-name comedians such as
Frankie Boyle , Jimmy Carr and Russell
Howard pass through the doors, as well as
high-profile speakers such as Sir David Frost
and Ann Widdecombe, and with our
monthly comedy night, The Big Laugh, showcasing three of the best up-
and-coming comedic talent the UK (if not the world!) has to offer, the
laughs keep on coming.
Now imagine the atmosphere and intimacy of a 120-seat cinema set in the grandeur of an old
council chamber where you can watch the latest blockbusters as well as the best of the art house
films that you can’t see at your local multiplex while enjoying a relaxing drink from the bar next
door. Quite simply it’s cinema heaven for the discerning film lover.
And if none of that interests you, how about joining a fortnightly knitting group where a sociable
drink and a chat is just as important as the knitting itself, or learning to juggle or belly dance in one
of our friendly workshops. Perhaps you have a hidden musical talent that it’s about time the world
(or at least Gloucester) heard about and you think that our monthly open mic night could be the
place to start. Maybe you need to hire a meeting room – we do that too! Whatever you’re into,
Gloucester Guildhall really does have it all. And if it turns out that we don’t have what you’re
looking for you can always make a suggestion – we love hearing your ideas, from the sensible to
the improbable, and you never know, you might just spark something new.
There’s a variety of ways that you can keep up to date with the latest news from Gloucester
Guildhall – we’re on Facebook and Twitter and you can also sign up to our mailing list from our
website www.gloucesterguildhall.co.uk where you’ll get a monthly email with details of all our
listings and any super exciting news just in.
We’re the county’s liveliest entertainment venue – join in!
Christmas Thank You
Over Christmas The Salvation Army in Gloucester prepared 250 food and 250 toy parcels
for the needy in Gloucester.
Major Adrian Altman the commanding officer said. “The demand was 25% up on
previous years. This involved a great deal of work from our members but we could not
have managed without the generosity of the people of Gloucester and we would like to
thank everyone for their support at Christmas and throughout the year.”
