Those new to Ham radio often ask the question, “what is a ‘repeater”? How does it work and how far will it boost the signal? What repeaters are available within a 50 mile radius? How far does the KØKKV repeater reach? The plus and minus has a purpose and how is it determined? What is the 100 and 123 tone? Warren Werner, NØXLT will provide insight into the proper use and function of a repeater. A question often asked is who can use a repeater and is there a fee? Many listen on the two meter, 146.76 (-) repeater and does the same protocol apply to the use of the local repeater as do other HF frequencies? There are some repeaters that link to other repeaters and can reach beyond the local repeater capabilities. Echo Link is technology that is available on a re- peater that allows a message to travel outside the limits of the local repeater. Come expecting a lively discussion and expect to expand your understanding of how the KØKKV repeater functions. Mike Walsh, KBØQH

From the President

I want to thank all the mem-bers that attended the De-

cember Club meeting and voted for candidates for the new LARC Board. After counting the votes on the ini-tial ballot, there was a tie be-tween two candidates and a tie breaking vote was taken.

Your vote counts. The newly elected Board voted new officers for 2014 at the December Board meeting. See the article on page 4 and 5 for additional details. On a different topic, I occasionally like to look into new evolving technology in Ham radio. My latest project has been to get Digi-tal Voice (DV) on HF up and running. Since I am already running digital modes through a soundcard interface, I already had most of what is needed for DV. I just had to acquire the software program "FreeDV" and an inex-pensive USB computer headset. After in-stalling and configuring those two items, I have successfully received digital voice trans-missions and the next step is to make a DV contact. If this new technology continues to develop, it has the potential to have an im-pact to Ham radio similar to when the inven-tion of Single Sideband (SSB) surpassed AM in popularity. If Digital Voice sounds interesting to you, just search the Internet for "FreeDV" and follow the links for more information.

Jeff Bennett, WØWKP received the Steve May Award. This Award is presented to someone who sees a need and steps forward to take it on without receiving recognition.

Jeff is a good representative for our Club. He al-ways has a pleasant attitude, even in the midst of a storm. Jeff not only organizes Field Day each year, but also opens the doors each month and makes arrangements for the place we hold our monthly meetings. The Award was presented by Club Presi-dent, Mike Walsh. Dianna May, KDØFGV was present for the annual event.

Mike Wasserstein, KBØDNP was presented the President’s Gavel by Club President, Mike Walsh, KBØQH.

Charles Davis, KØFY was presented the Robert Fricke Award. Charles is an avid homebrew kit builder and submitted his project at the Novem-ber meeting. He was presented a

plaque and $100 for his outstanding homebrew pro-jects. A panel of judges determined the winner of the Robert Fricke Award.

Bob Sindlar, KØKPH was awarded the Jerry Kohn Award for his out-standing contribution to Public Ser-vice events. Bob worked a total of 28 events, 169.19 hours. Bob is not only willing to step forward in the

area of service to others, but he is also knowledgea-ble in all aspects of Ham Radio. He always wears a smile and is helpful and friendly.

Dan Sellmeyer, WBØYYE was honored for his willingness to help other Hams and further Ham Radio. Dan is always ready to go beyond what is expected. Dan currently co-chairs the Technology Committee

and is an avid homebrewer and maintains kit build-ing inventory for the homebrew classes held month-ly. Barbara Woerner, KAØGON, daughter of Ed Woerner presented the Award.

Bob Mitchell, WBØRJJ received the Jerry Cox Award for his steadfastness and his desire to improve the Club in any way possible. He is a behind the scenes kind of Ham who expects no recognition for his faithful service

over many years. He was responsible to see that the LOG was in the mail every month for over six years, that's 72 Lincoln LOG.

Salt Creek Symphony provided the music.

December Board Update: Board mem-bers would like Club members to submit ideas for the 2014 monthly Club monthly programs. The Board approved the purchase of envelopes to mail a 16 page LOG. Helping to move the inventory of over 3,000 gifts were: WBØAEA, KØKTZ, KDØPTK, WBØQQT, NØSFC and WBØYYE. —Reynolds Davis,

Ham Minute The 20-meter band is the focal point of all big-time DX and HF activities. This band is open to more areas of the world for longer periods each day than any other band. The best time to work 20 meters is around dawn, dusk, and right before retiring for bed. Ref. “Your Guide to HF Fun” by

Antenna Basics Workshop Instructor, Darrell Best, WAØQYI (Elmer) Saturday, February 15 1:00-2:30 pm, Major Cafe (Southeast corner of Hwy 77/ Saltillo Rd southeast side of building.)

A s many radio amateurs will tell you, the most

single important support item or accessory in most HF setup is the antenna. The ability of any station to reach out long distances and achieve reliable communications is directly related to the overall effectiveness of its anten-na system. Ref:Your Guide to HF Fun by Dave Ingram

The workshop is for anyone who wants to understand what happens to a radio signal from the time it leaves the transmitter to the time it is amplified and detected in a distant receiver. Darrell owned and operated Best Communi-cations for over 20 years.. “Antennas have al-ways been my favorite part of the hobby. I like to build and try weird antennas.” The tall antenna still stands at 33rd & O Street where Best Com-munications was located. Darrell also worked for KOLN-TV as an engineer. In addition to what you learn at this workshop, you can take ad-vantage of the LARC sponsored monthly Home-brewers meeting at 2:00 PM, Salvation Army Center, on the Sunday following the Wednesday Club meeting. Check the k0kkv.org website and monthly LOG for details. Father and son, Dan, WBØYYE and Steve, WBØQQT, Sellmeyer, chair the Technology Committee. To reserve your space for the Antenna Workshop, email [email protected], cell phone 402-310-5003 or listen to the nightly 9:00 PM 146-760 (-) Net.
